SUMMER ASSIGNMENT: AP Physics B is a college level course that uses advanced algebra and trigonometry as the primary tools for problem solving. We will be moving at about 3.0x108 m/s so it is imperative that you are ready to start in September. Your summer assignment is: 1. Read Chapter 1 – Introduction. Pay attention to how the examples are presented. Familiarize yourself with the text book. 2. In complete sentences - Explain the following: 1. Difference between a scientific model and a scientific theory. 2. Explain why experiments are important in the testing of a theory and the improvement of a model.

3. Explain why uncertainty is present in all measurements and how to state the uncertainty after taking a measurement. 4. Explain how to calculate the percent uncertainty in a measurement. 5. State the SI units of mass, length, and time. 6. State the metric (SI) prefixes (multipliers). 7. Give examples converting English units to SI units and vice versa using the factorlabel method in problem solving. 8. Distinguish between basic quantities and derived quantities as well as basic units and derived units. 9. Explain the rules of significant digits. 10. Explain what is meant by an orderofmagnitude estimate and use orderofmagnitude estimates in an example involving rapid estimating. 3. Do the following problems at the end of the chapter # 1 – 10, 12 – 16, 19, 21, 32, 33, 35, 44 4. Email me at [email protected]. I will be creating an email group so that I can disseminate information throughout the upcoming school year. Please write out the questions and show all work. You may type all or part of the assignment. The summer assignment will be collected on the first day of class. I will NOT accept it late – so don’t forget it! Remember – this is a college course. If you have difficulty answering questions or solving problems, DON’T GIVE UP! Look it up - Use the internet. Email me and ask – I’ll point you to where you can find help. The AP fee of $100 will be collected in September. All students will take the AP in May and Juniors will take the Physics Regents in June. I’m excited and looking forward to September – Hope you are too! Have a wonderful summer! Mrs. Ioannou
