How we make difference Since our charity’s formation more than 60 years ago we have made great strides forward. Horder Healthcare has evolved from treating those with arthritis and making living with the condition as bearable as possible, to delivering life-changing joint replacement surgery. From 25 years ago when the first operation was performed at The Horder Centre, we now carry out more NHS hip and knee operations than any other independent single site provider in the country. Last year we extended the reach of our charity by acquiring The McIndoe Centre in East Grinstead, a highly respected specialist centre in maxillofacial, plastic reconstruction surgery and ophthalmology. With this new addition to the Horder Healthcare family, we now have hospitals in Crowborough and East Grinstead and clinics in Eastbourne, Seaford and Tunbridge Wells. We now offer our patients additional services in our aim to advance health and relieve patients suffering from ill health. We have taken the strengths and qualities currently seen within our charity to a wider audience, making Horder Healthcare a premium healthcare destination. Donations play a vital role in helping us to achieve this, therefore your support is needed more than ever. We provide incredibly high standards in healthcare on a not for profit basis, with 95% of our patients accessing our services free at the point of delivery through the NHS. All surpluses generated from our work are reinvested back into the charity to provide healthcare benefit to our patients, as well as develop staff, invest in quality and improve services, facilities and infrastructure.

The success of this model can clearly be observed on a visit to the The Horder Centre in Crowborough. Money raised and reinvested through our Capital Development Programme has delivered stunning new state-of-the art-facilities for our patients, who come from all over the South East.

Our Values

Throughout the past 60 years we have endeavoured to make a real difference to people’s lives through our core values of being Caring and Friendly and delivering Quality treatment with Integrity and Pride. Guided by these values we hope to treat more and more people who suffer from various conditions and continue the outstanding care that is associated with the Horder name. Horder Healthcare is a registered charity, a dynamic and evolving healthcare organisation, that is truly improving the health outcomes of the people in the communities it serves. Our ambition is to extend our reach, to identify the healthcare needs within communities and work collaboratively with others in an integrated way to provide much needed healthcare services. We are also exploring how we can work with people to be as healthy as they possibly can, given their personal circumstances, and where possible prevent ill health. As a charity we have no shareholders and can therefore reinvest any surplus money we generate to benefit more people and achieve our purpose and vision.

The Appeal Thanks to the generous support through previous appeals we have already funded many projects. These include; our highly successful capital redevelopment programme at The Horder Centre called – Building for the Future and our all terrain 4x4 vehicle purchase, which raised £25,000 during 2016. The success of this appeal has enabled our more highly dependent patients to access our services in all weather conditions We are now seeking funds for a range of items to enable us to further develop our hospitals and enable Horder Healthcare to continue to be known as truly world class. We hope that these items will bring real improvements in the quality of our care and transform the lives of our patients. In order to do this we have launched our Appeal, which aims to raise £20,000 through support from individual supporters, corporate partners, grant-making trusts and fundraising events. You can track our progress online via www.horderhealthcare.co.uk/supportus Your support will allow Horder Healthcare to fund the equipment it needs to stay as a centre of excellence. Keep reading to see some examples of the facility development and equipment we have currently on our Wish List!

In 2016 Horder Healthcare introduced The Butterfly Scheme into both of it’s hospitals. The scheme provides a system of hospital care for people living with dementia or who simply find that their memory isn’t as reliable as it used to be. When a patient opts for the scheme, a Butterfly symbol will be placed above their bed. This symbol is the patient’s request for ALL staff to follow a specific care response. In hospital, dozens of staff can pass through a patient’s life each day and in order to deliver the most appropriate care for each individual, staff need to know if a patient has dementia or memory impairment,. This scheme has enabled us to educate Horder Healthcare colleagues across all communication touch points in order to support these patients. All evidence supports the view that keeping a patient calm, hydrated and orientated in their surroundings, will help provide treatment, deliver quality care, promote a quick recovery, reduce length of hospital stay, reduce readmissions and generally enhance quality of life for a person living with dementia. There are some simple changes that can be implemented quickly and have a positive impact. 9

Below are some examples of the equipment, that with your help we can deliver effective dementia friendly care: 1. Toilet Signs A small dementia friendly toilet sign on the en suite door, along with a contrasting coloured toilet seat and handrails, means a person can quickly and easily find, identify and use the toilet independently, reducing incontinence, promoting independence and maintaining dignity. It is also proven that this strategy can also reduce falls and agitation. 2. Dementia Friendly Crockery A person with dementia may have sight impairment, an inability to distinguish colours and struggle to pick up a cup or see food on a plate. Dementia friendly crockery can help overcome these issues and enable a person to maintain good levels of hydration without the aid of nursing staff 3. A Reminder Board It is easy to get disorientated in a hospital, every day seems the same and we all know how easy and confusing it can be to lose track of time. A person with dementia who does not know the day and time can become more anxious and distressed, not only about where they are, but also about where they think they should be. A reminder board can complement the clock well as enable us to add notes for the patient that are important to them (e.g when to expect visitors, when the doctor is coming, EDD perhaps) 4. Activity Box The patient can become distressed when alone and certainly days in bed can seem very long and boring. Short periods of time engaging in meaningful activity can keep a person calm for hours. Keeping an activity box available, which may include items such as: jigsaws, games, books, arts & crafts, fiddle muffs and fiddle aprons. An easy to use old fashioned radio will also be provided, as many people, including those with dementia like the company or music.

We are now looking for your support to adapt one current bedroom at each hospital site and ensure it ‘s‘ dementia friendly’. The estimated cost for two bedrooms is £1000 10

AccuVein is a global leader in medical imaging solutions. Vein illumination with this breakthrough device, will allow Horder Healthcare professionals to see a map of peripheral veins on the skin’s surface with the goal of improving venipuncture, the most commonly performed invasive medical procedure, and other vascular access procedures. AccuVein’s vein viewing system is the world’s first handheld, non-contact vein illumination solution. It is built on AccuVein’s proprietary technology as embodied in its patent portfolio which includes dozens of patents covering a broad range of imaging and medical diagnostic technologies. Locating veins is critical for many medical procedures that require vein access or avoidance. These procedures include IV starts, blood draw, sclerotherapy, general and cosmetic surgery

The Cost of Failed Attempts: •

Of all invasive medical procedures, venipuncture is the most common and these venipuncture attempts can fail. As a result:

Intravenous therapy may not begin promptly;

Surgeries can be delayed due to a lack of access;

Physician intervention to access a difficult vein can erode productivity;

Patients may endure unnecessary needlesticks and additional discomfort;

Patients may bruise or require additional healing time without optimal placement of incision site or injection;

Stress may increase for both patients and staff.

£3,950 a device (ex VAT and Carriage) We are looking to purchase one for each of our hospitals to improve patient discomfort and enhance the care that we give our patients. 11

The Hover Jack and Hover Matt have made a huge difference to patients journey at The Horder Centre, Crowborough. We would now like to bring this benefit to our orthopaedic patients at The McIndoe Centre. The Hover Jack is a safe and effective way for transferring patients from the floor to a bed or chair after having had a fall. Not only this, it allows the patient to be more comfortable when being moved back into their bed. Although we are able to move patients without this equipment, the positives of having a Hover Jack far outweigh the negatives. With the use of the Hover Jack it minimises the manual handling risks for patient and staff who are helping the patient. Prior to purchasing the Hover Jack a hoist will be used which is not ideal for patients post knee or hip orthopaedic op. As this document mentions, by improving the equipment in our hospitals it minimises the number of staff members needed to safely lift patients who have fallen. This will allow for our staff’s time to be allocated more effectively, meaning they are able to see more patients. A Hover Matt compliments the Hover Jack by effectively transferring the patient from the floor onto the Hover Jack. This is particularly useful when a patient has fallen in the tight/small space.

We are looking to raise funds for this equipment in order to enhance our patient’s experience at The Mcindoe Centre. The cost for a Hover Jack and Mat is £8,000.

CPM (continuous passive movement machine) This device allows passive movements to be performed to a joint for hours at a time. CPM machines are considered advantageous for post-surgical treatment to break the cycle of trauma, inflammation and the loss of range of motion. Further to this the increased range of motion and flexibility helps to prevent joint stiffness and speed the recovery of post-operative range of motion. We have found that with the use of the machine at The Horder Centre it reduces hospitalisation time, the need for pain medication, reduces pain and oedema, scar tissue formation and reduces the risk of blood clots. Now that we have extended our reach with the addition on The McIndoe Centre in East Grinstead, it is ever important for us to provide another machine for this additional site. Patients who come to The Horder Centre or The McIndoe Centre for Orthopaedic surgery or for MUA (Manipulations under anaesthetic) are encouraged to utilise the CPM from post MUA for as long as they can tolerate it. Therefore if MUAs are carried out, there should always be a CPM available for patients to use.

We need your help to purchase an additional machine for The McIndoe Centre at the cost of roughly £3000.
