APPENDIX C ADDITIONAL RESOURCES AND MODELS TO CONSIDER Trauma-informed care, harm reduction, motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioral therapy, strength-based, recovery-oriented, person-centered care are all heavily researched, well-known, and highly recommended models of care to utilize when working with individual experiencing homelessness. Programs are encouraged to research and review various models of care including those that are targeted to youth. Provided below are additional resources and models of treatment to consider. o Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA) is a behavioral intervention that seeks to replace environmental contingencies that have supported alcohol or drug use with pro-social activities and behaviors that support recovery. This model of care has been adapted for use in a drop-in center for homeless youth.1 o Attachment, Self-Regulation and Competency (ARC) Model is a framework for intervention with youth exposed to complex trauma and is designed for youth from early childhood to adolescence and their caregivers and the caregiving systems.2 o Collaborative HIV Prevention and Adolescent Mental Health Project (CHAMP) Family Program is a 12-week, family-focused, developmentally timed intervention for low income communities. This model has been adapted for the needs homeless families in HIV Prevention Outreach for Parents and Early Adolescents) for early adolescent youth and their adult caregivers living in homeless shelters in New York City.3

o Lions Quest Skills for Adolescence is a life skills education program designed for schoolwide and classroom implemented for ages 10-14, grades 6-8 to bolster interpersonal relationships and encourage health drug-free lives. This model of care has been adapted to homeless street and at-risk youth.4 o Psychological First Aid for Youth Experiencing Homelessness is a trauma-informed framework and model for intervention by direct care staff so they can better understand and address the needs of homeless youth.5 o Relationship-based Care is a mental health treatment model that was designed specifically for homeless adults with severe mental illness who have difficulty with engagement and sustained interpersonal contact. This interdisciplinary team model of care uses motivational enhancement therapy techniques and conceptualizes the client’s progress through four stages: engagement, stability and commitment, awakening, and growth and differentiation.6 o Sanctuary Model is a theory-based, trauma-informed, evidence-supported, whole culture approach that has a structured method for designing an organizational culture. This approach is designed to facilitate the development of structures, processes, and behaviors on the part of staff, clients, and the community that can expand healing of victims of traumatic experience and extended exposure to adversity.7 o Seeking Safety is a present-focused treatment for clients with a history of trauma and substance abuse that works to develop coping skills through psycho-education and has been

Characteristics of this program include flexibility, integrated services, and post-care services.10 o Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is the most established evidence-based treatment for children and youth that address systemic issues and addresses trauma and its effects. 11
