RATIONALE: Mobile and tablet-based health applications have been increasingly utilized to facilitate patient education regarding chronic conditions. We compared the impact of smoking status and the number of allergy comorbidities on improvement in asthma knowledge in patients completing the ASTHMA-Educator software program (developed at Montefiore) and nurse-delivered asthma education intervention. METHODS: We observed 52 (31 received the ASTHMA-Educator; 21 received nurse-delivered education) severe asthma patients. We compared pre/post-intervention asthma knowledge scores (measured by the asthma knowledge questionnaire) between the software-delivered education group and the human educator group. We then evaluated patients based on the number of allergy comorbidities (e.g. allergic rhinoconjunctivitis), as well as smoking history, and compared how these groups benefited from software-delivered education versus human-delivered education. RESULTS: All patients with one or more comorbidity had a statistically significant improvement in asthma knowledge after receiving either the ASTHMA-Educator or human-delivered education (p
