Application of High Resolution Inversion: A Fresh New Look at the Reservoir In 2003, an oil company commissioned an inversion study from a competing seismic inversion contractor to assist in finding thin sand bodies in a major oil play. Using the available post-stack seismic data and the available logs, the competitor provided to the company an impedance cube resulting from the contractor's deterministic inversion. A line from this impedance volume is shown below in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1: Competitor’s Deterministic Inversion Result
The examination of these results raised many questions , and the inversion was clearly not able to pinpoint the thin sands. As a result, the oil company contacted Prism Seismic to use its High Resolution Inversion on the same data set. Prism Seismic applied its deterministic High Resolution Inversion to create a 0.5ms sample rate impedance cube that yields a better understanding of the critical distribution of thin-bedded reservoirs. Fig. 2 shows Prism Seismic's inversion on the same line as in Fig. 1. With this high resolution impedance cube, the geologic realities are clearly visible, and planning wells becomes much easier. Drilling locations have been picked using these results.
