Applications of Signal Processing in Engineering and Beyond

I

n my inaugural editorial, published in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM) in January 2012, I quoted a leader of an automotive company in Germany who said, “The application of signal processing in the automotive industry has become of great importance to us and will play a major role in future activities of our company.” This issue of SPM includes a “Special Reports” column by Ron Schneiderman, where he reports on the importance of signal processing in automotive technology and highlights a wide range of signal processing applications. Undoubtedly, this area of engineering presents new challenges to the signal proDigital Object Identifier 10.1109/MSP.2012.2226293 Date of publication: 5 December 2012

cessing practitioner, not only because of the continuous introduction of new legislations, such as safety regulations, but also because automobile manufacturers continuously seek new ways to differentiate their vehicles. In the November 2012 issue, SPM published the “Life Sciences” column “Computational Prediction of Important Regions in Protein Sequences.” The author showed how extracting functional regions from linear protein sequences shares many similarities with problems in signal processing, which suggests the application of signal processing tools to solving a problem in life science. The power of the signal processing discipline is its application to diverse areas of engineering and beyond. We are living in a most interesting and challenging era

due to the continuous growth of interdisciplinary research that opens doors, not only for solving specific problems, but also developing new tools that derive from the application. SPM is a tutorial-style magazine that brings to the signal processing community bimonthly survey articles of the most recent advances in signal processing theory and applications. For this issue, I invited Andrea Cavallaro and Andres Kwasinski, the area editors for columns and forum, to write a brief on their editorial work. I encourage you to submit manuscripts for columns and forum, and make suggestions for timely topics for special issues and feature articles.
