PRESENTED BY: PROFESSOR STEPHEN SMALLBONE Professor Stephen Smallbone is a psychologist and Professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Director of Griffith Youth Forensic Service, and an Australian Research Council ‘Future’ Fellow. Professor Smallbone’s research is concerned with understanding and preventing sexual violence and abuse. His recent publications include the books Situational Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse (Wortley & Smallbone, 2006) and Preventing Child Sexual Abuse: Evidence, Policy and Practice (Smallbone, Marshall, & Wortley, 2008).

What will I learn? The workshop will focus on: • Understanding how and why sexual abuse occurs • Understanding how sexual abuse occurs in domestic, organisational, public, and ‘virtual’ settings • Identifying potential risk and protective factors at various levels of offenders’ and victims’ natural social ecology (individual, family, peer, organisational, and neighbourhood systems) • How prevention strategies can be organised to target offenders, victims and settings across primary, secondary and tertiary levels of prevention • The application of situational crime prevention concepts and methods to the prevention of sexual abuse • Treatment and risk management with known (youth and adult) sexual offenders, including how to interpret treatment outcome studies

Is this workshop right for me? This workshop is suitable for professionals and non-professionals who work with or engage in activities with children, young and vulnerable people in child serving organisations, community based organisations and educational settings.

By the end of this workshop you will be able to: • An integrated theoretical framework for understanding how and why sexual abuse occurs • A conceptual framework for organising and targeting prevention strategies • Knowledge of situational prevention concepts and methods, and how these might be applied particularly within organisations. • Knowledge of treatment approaches for adolescent and adult sexual abusers
