April 22, 2016
Dear CW Families, A huge thank you to Mr. Knudsen, Mrs. St. Antoine, Mrs. Bouley, and Mrs. Elsholz for everything they did over the past year to prepare our students to have a meaningful experience in helping others though building CPU’s. The embedded learning and deep thinking that took place…the engagement and pride of our students was fulfilling to see! Thanks to our families that volunteered! David
CW News M-Step: Congrats to our 5th grade students! They did an outstanding job of celebrating their thinking on the M-Step. Our 6th grade students will begin next week! Dessert Night Out: Come out to Spoonlickers in Ada on April 27th from 3:00 9:00 p.m. This is a great way to support our PTO while getting a delicious treat! 5th Grade Families: In the next week, you will receive a letter from the Central Woodlands Music Department in the mail. The letter will have your child's 6th grade music choice listed. Band and orchestra parent/guardians are highly recommended to attend the Instrumental Music Meeting at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, May 11 in the CW Cafetorium. You'll be informed of important information on instrument rental. Choir families need not attend the meeting. For 6th Grade Families: Course request forms CMS for 7th grade are due on Thursday, April 28th. If you did not make the CMS meeting on Thursday night, your child’s course request booklet and form are coming home today!

Dear Central Woodlands Families, With the arrival of warmer weather, we often begin to receive questions on our Dress Code policy. We would like to partner with our families in support of our dress code. We encourage our students to dress in a manner, which allows individual freedom, while maintaining a respectful atmosphere. Our dress code policy can be found on page 26 of our District Elementary Handbook. Our policy begins with a series of questions that students and families can ask regarding the appropriateness of one’s dress and grooming. This process helps our students become part of the process of selecting appropriate clothes for school. In addition, the following are some of the prohibited styles or manners of dress found in our district policy. Please refer to our online handbook for the full list. • No make-up please. In “keeping kids younger longer” philosophy, we discourage the use of make-up for students. Although make-up is often introduced at an early age as a fun “dress- up” play activity, it is strongly discouraged for students at school. • Our schools are air-conditioned, so despite warm weather, short shorts or short skirts are not acceptable. • Tank tops or spaghetti straps are permitted only if layered with another shirt with sleeves. • Sleeveless shirts and blouses for girls are acceptable. No halter or low cut tops. • No bare midriffs. • No sleeveless shirts for boys unless worn with another shirt underneath. Please take time to review our dress code policy with your child. We will be doing the same here at school. In the event that a student’s attire does not meet our dress code standards, the student will be asked to solve the situation by finding appropriate attire. Our goal is to allow for this to be a learning situation and not one that embarrasses a child. Often times, students have extra clothes, borrow clothing from a classmate, or can find something in our Ranger Station so that the situation is resolved quickly. In the event appropriate clothing cannot be located, the student will be able to call home to obtain appropriate clothing. The final decision as to the appropriateness of any apparel will be made by Central Woodlands administration. We appreciate your support and understanding. We want to assure you of our commitment to your child’s growth and well-being and want to work as partners with you for your child’s success. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at any time. Sincerely,
David Simpson, Principal

END OF YEAR MEAL CHARGE POLICY Throughout the year, many students have incurred negative balances on school meal accounts from purchases on credit. The school district cannot carry negative balances over the summer! To avoid this situation, beginning on May 1, students will not be allowed to make purchases unless there are enough funds in their account to cover the purchase. If not, they will be charged full student price for a cold cheese sandwich meal (cheese sandwich, milk, and fruit or vegetable sides). Money still in the account at the end of the school year is carried over to the next year, except for students leaving the district and graduates. You may request a refund for any remaining funds, transfer funds to a sibling account, or donate remaining funds to another student by contacting the Food Service Department at 616.493.8774 , or by email to
[email protected] or
[email protected] (include student name, your name and mailing address). Please keep a sufficient balance in your child’s account to cover his/her lunches through the end of the school year. If you are unsure of your child’s meal account balance, or have any questions regarding the lunch program, please call the Food Service office, email us, or set up a parent account at www.sendmoneytoschool.com. Your help with this policy is greatly appreciated. Chris Nelson, FHPS Food Service Director
