KINGSTON - PEO Kingston Chapter GLP Chair Hafiz Bashir, P.Eng., attended an event hosted by Sophie Kiwala MPP (Kingston and the Islands), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, on March 22. Deputy Premier, and Treasury Board President Deb Matthews MPP (London North Centre) was the evening’s special guest. Minister Matthews is also responsible for the province’s Poverty Reduction Strategy. Also participating in the event were former Attorney General and MPP for Kingston and the Islands John Gerretson, Kingston City Councillor Laura Turner (District 4: Lakeside), and PEO Kingston Chapter member Kaurie Casista, P.Eng. Mr. Bashir told the GLP Weekly that he spoke with Minister Matthews about the repeal of section 12(3)(a) of the Professional Engineers Act, commonly referred to the industrial exception, and PEO’s disappointment in the government for cancelling its proclamation. Ms. Kiwala has been supportive of PEO and engineers in Ontario. She was the Liberal caucus recipient of the 2015 PEO MPP Award for her help in raising the profile of professional engineering and for her involvement in local professional engineering activities.

PEO Scarborough Chapter Chair Narayana Asogan, P.Eng., attended the Leading Women Build Community Award Ceremony hosted by Soo Wong MPP (Scarborough-Agincourt), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Community and Social Services, on March 31 at the L’Amoreaux Collegiate Institute in Toronto. York University’s Assistant Dean of Engineering Marisa Sterling, P.Eng., presented the keynote speech at the ceremony. Ranee Mahalingam, P.Eng., and Karen Webb, P.Eng., were awarded the Leading Women Build Community Awards.

PEO PRESIDENT RECEIVES AN ONTARIO VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD MISSISSAUGA - PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., was a recipient of one of the 2016 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards on April 4 at the Mississauga Convention Centre. Bob Delaney MPP (Mississauga— Streetsville), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy, and Harinder Malhi MPP (BramptonSpringdale), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, presented Mr. Chong with the award. The ceremony underscores the importance of acknowledging the selfless work of Ontario’s volunteers who are active beyond simple membership in their organization.

PEO Scarborough Chapter hosted its 13th Annual Bridge Building Competition to mark National Engineering Month on April 2. With 90 teams, over 240 students grades three to eight participated in the event. Also participating were Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid MPP (Scarborough Centre), Associate Finance Minister (Ontario Retirement Pension Plan) Mitzie Hunter MPP (Scarborough—Guildwood), Soo Wong MPP (ScarboroughAgincourt), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Community and Social Services, Toronto City Councillors Chin Lee (Ward 41) and Raymond Cho (Ward 42) and Toronto District School Board Trustee Parthi Kandavel (Ward 18).

The bridge had to be constructed out of popsicle sticks and glue and were tested to destruction. All participants received a certificate and the winners received a prize. This event was in the spirit of National Engineering Month because it afforded many young students the opportunity to experience engineering firsthand while allowing them access to engineers as a resource for more information.

PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., and PEO Registrar Gerard McDonald, P.Eng., attended the event. They had the opportunity to speak with former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and a number of Ministers and MPPs. The Heritage Dinner brings together community and business leaders to celebrate accomplishments during the previous year.
