Healthy People. Vibrant Communities. Sustainable Environments
President and Chair Message On behalf of Parks and Recreation Ontario, it is a great pleasure and honour to extend to you a warm invitation to attend the 2016 Parks and Recreation Ontario Aquatics Conference at Deerhurst Conference Centre from November 1 -4. The conference committee has created another dynamic program of excellent sessions, keynote presenters and networking opportunities. Aquatics demands a high degree of professional management skills to ensure the safety of participants, the effective delivery of programs, and the proper maintenance of facilities. In an increasingly complex world, professional standards are critical to achieving excellence and professional development opportunities, such as the PRO Aquatics Conference, are a great resource. We look forward to welcoming you to an inspiring, educational and enjoyable program in Muskoka. Make the most of this valuable opportunity to connect with colleagues, expand your network, and deepen your knowledge and expertise. We would like to acknowledge our educational partners Canadian Red Cross and the Lifesaving Society. They have provided specialized sessions again this year designed to help enhance the work we, collectively, do in aquatics. The educational sessions and keynotes offer a full range of topics from risk management to staff management to information management. There is also valuable information about programming, facility design and accessible aquatics.

Day 2
Wednesday, Nov 2nd PROGRAM AT A GLANCE Registration and Information Booth Open 7:30 am - 5:00 pm Full Conference Delegates’ Breakfast 7:30 am - 8:45 am
Welcome and Keynote Address 9:00 am - 10:30 pm The Changing World of Aquatics The world of aquatic recreation is ever-changing. Gone are competitive rectangular pools and “in” are freeform family leisure centers with interactive features. Stoic lifeguards poised upon tall perches are a thing of the past. Today lifeguards are walking and talking. Floatation devices, long banned at aquatic venues, are now offered free of charge to help prevent drowning. Remember the past and explore the future of aquatics as we adapt to our changing environment: new budgets, new demographics and new ideas. About Shawn De Rosa - Director of Aquatics, Penn State University
Shawn is the Director of Aquatics at Penn State University. One of the leading experts in aquatic risk management in the United States, Shawn is the former Northeast Regional Director for the National Recreation and Park Association. He also served for three years on the National Recreation and Park Association’s Board of Directors for the Aquatic Facility Operator program where he helped guide the NRPA Aquatic Branch in strengthening the AFO program and in developing the Aquatic Facility Technician program. Shawn brings over 20 years of experience in aquatics as a lifeguard, instructor trainer, Certified Pool Operator, Aquatic Facility Operator Instructor, Safe Swimming Beaches Instructor and Aquatics Director. As an authorized instructor for Aquatic Safety Research Group, LLC, Shawn trains pool operators worldwide in the safe and efficient operation of both public and semi-public aquatic facilities. With the combination of his expertise in aquatics and his legal background, he has taught programs in the U.S. as well as in Hong Kong and Mexico, bringing his knowledge of safe pool operations to swimming pool operators across the globe. Shawn DeRosa was selected as one of the Top 100 Leaders in the aquatic profession for 2003 and 2004, as profiled by Aquatics International magazine. In February 2005, Attorney DeRosa was profiled by Aquatics International as one of “the 25 most powerful people in the world of aquatics - including superstar gold medalist Michael Phelps.”

There are ten top strategies that leaders can use to ensure that they get the desired results. Race Against Time - Humanitarian Challenges of Today
Doctors and nurses have always been associated with humanitarian work. The outstanding and courageous contributions of the medical profession to humanitarian endeavours is often celebrated. Doctors save lives but so do lifeguards! Join Justin, Olin and Henry as they share their humanitarian adventures around the globe, seeking to spare life and help protect it. The global drowning epidemic compels them to take action as they pioneer new ways to think about drowning in the developing world and create effective solutions that will save thousands of lives. Out of a deep passion for open water and a strong desire to prevent drownings, ISLA aids people in championing aquatic safety in their own coastal communities. This past year, Olin Patterson and Henry Reyes, from the International Surf Lifesaving Association (ISLA), helped thousands of refugees in Greece. They raised $100,000 and sent 35 ISLA volunteers from 10 different countries to help with the crisis. For months, the coast of Lesvos in Greece has been the epicenter for thousands of Syrian refugees seeking safety and shelter. Unfortunately for too many, the trip across the sea ended in drownings and deaths. Since the beginning of January, ISLA has been working with Lifeguard Hellas at aid stations along the coast to provide first responder medical and rescue assistance for the Syrian refugees arriving by vessel. From there, Syrian refugees were given warm clothing, food, safety from the treacherous journey …and most importantly, hope and dignity. About Olin Patterson, Co-Founder of ISLA, and Member, Board of Directors Olin Patterson is a co-founder of ISLA, serves on the Board of Directors and has since its inception in 2008. Currently Olin works running a new venture that specializes in marketing and film production for Outdoor Retailers. With over ten years of lifeguarding experience and a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and Entrepreneurial Studies, Olin has been leading teams of ISLA volunteers all over the globe. Outside of work and ISLA, Olin’s passions include sailing, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, rock climbing and spending time with friends and family. About Henry Reyes, Co-Founder of ISLA, and Member, Board of Directors Henry Germain Reyes is a co-founder of ISLA and is currently a Harbor Patrol Officer for the Santa Monica Police Department. as well as an Ocean Lifeguard with Huntington Beach Fire. With more than 19 years of lifeguarding experience and Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurship, “Don Pico” has been leading teams of ISLA volunteers all over the globe. Pico’s passions outside of lifesaving include piloting airplanes, Scuba diving, bodysurfing, snowboarding, cycling, racing motorcycles and spending time with his family. About Justin Sempsrott, MD, Executive Director, Lifeguards Without Borders While his career began as a lifeguard, Justin is now an EMS/Emergency Medicine Physician in North Carolina. For 20 years he has served as an ocean lifeguard with the American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps. In 2006, he founded Lifeguards Without Borders. As a member of Global Outreach Doctors, Justin promotes public health measures to reduce accidental deaths from preventable causes (such as drownings) and to increase the skills of disaster response teams who are deployed to disasters.
