November 4 - 7 JW Marriott, The Rosseau Muskoka Minett, ON
President and Chair Message On behalf of Parks and Recreation Ontario, it is a great pleasure and honour to extend to you a warm invitation to attend the 2014 Parks and Recreation Ontario Aquatics Conference at the JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort from November 4 - 7. Building on the momentum of the 40th anniversary conference last year, the conference committee has created another dynamic program of excellent sessions, keynote presenters and networking opportunities. Excitement is building in Ontario with the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games just around the corner. Aquatics will be one of the high-profile events at the Games, and the new facilities built for the Games will be a lasting legacy for healthy communities. As a sector, our challenge will be to capitalize on this excitement and encourage our citizens to be more active and involved through our programs and services. Aquatics demands a high degree of professional management skills to ensure the safety of participants, the effective delivery of programs, and the proper maintenance of facilities. In an increasingly complex world, professional standards are critical to achieving excellence and professional development opportunities, such as the PRO Aquatics Conference, are a great resource. We look forward to welcoming you to an inspiring, educational and enjoyable program in Muskoka. Make the most of this valuable opportunity to connect with colleagues, make new connections and deepen your knowledge and expertise. Minnie Fisher Chair Aquatics Conference Committee

Day 2
Wednesday, Nov 5th PROGRAM AT A GLANCE Registration and Information Booth Open 7:30 am - 5 pm Delegate’s Breakfast 7:30 am - 8:45 am Conference Welcome and Keynote 9 am - 10:15 pm The Disney Difference: Service With so much volatility in the theme park business, how has Disney been able to keep such a strong foothold, often claiming the top spots in profitability and guest ratings? Drawing on his experiences with Disney Parks and Resorts, and the Disney Institute’s book called “Be Our Guest”, Joshua distills the recipe for leveraging service experiences to create unforgettable moments for guests. While the Disney Difference is the main topic, you’ll also hear how to apply and adapt these ideas for your organization. Understanding the key role played by staff and setting processes in designing guest service experiences, Joshua seeks to help companies transform their businesses and their bottom lines. With a dozen years of experience in the recreation industry, Joshua has been able to put many of his personal tenets into action, managing one of the largest and highest grossing aquatic programs in Alberta.
About Joshua Koke With a formal background in Psychology and Sociology, Joshua is actively engaged in research and practical work that helps organizations develop their organizational culture, guest service focus, and employee engagement. One of Josh’s key research areas is the Walt Disney Company’s service and leadership programs. From study, to field work, to training with the Disney Institute, Joshua has done everything but work for the media giant and believes that an appreciation for the Disney Difference can help businesses across a variety of industries, particularly those that deal directly with guests/customers.

Day 3
Thursday, Nov 6th Keynote 1:30 pm - 2:45 pm Does My Pool Matter? Using Aquatics to Drive Social Justice in Ontario Gareth Hedges, Senior Associate General Counsel and Child Safety Consultant, The Redwoods Group Inc. Over 100 people drowned in Ontario in 2013. Over 4,000 people drowned in Canada and the United States combined. It is estimated that over 1 million people drowned worldwide. We know that drowning is a public health problem, but it is also a social justice problem, because drowning does not impact everyone equally. It disproportionately affects ethnic minorities, the poor and new immigrants, who drown at much higher rates than other Canadians and Americans. As aquatic professionals, we are obligated to address the injustice that persists in our industry, but simply calling attention to that injustice is not sufficient. We must look to our organization’s purpose and leverage that purpose to generate a change—a disruption in business as usual. It is this disruption that can lead to permanent, positive social change across Ontario, Canada and worldwide. To begin this process, we all must look at our own organizations and ask, “Does my pool matter?”
About Gareth Hedges Gareth Hedges is Senior Associate General Counsel and Child Safety Consultant for The Redwoods Group. Prior to his role in the office of General Counsel, Gareth worked for the Redwoods Group for six years as an Aquatic Safety and Risk Management Specialist. In addition to serving as in-house counsel for The Redwoods Group, he continues to work closely with Redwoods’ clients in these areas, including providing assistance for risk management, crisis management and post-incident investigation. Gareth has trained thousands of staff in aquatic safety best practices and has presented at the National Drowning Prevention Symposium, Association of Aquatics Professionals Annual Conference, the World Conference on Drowning Prevention, World Aquatic Health Conference, and the American Camp Association National Conference among others. He was on the CDC’s drowning prevention expert panel in 2011 and currently sits on the advisory committee for the National Drowning Prevention Alliance. In 2012, Aquatics International named Gareth as one of the “Power 25” leaders in the aquatics community.
