This season, the GLUCKSMAN invites you to explore the wonder and majesty of the ocean with our new exhibitions Now Wakes the Sea and Deep Maps. These shows look at the ways in which the sea both inspires and intrigues, taking you on a voyage from the coastlines of Ireland to the unknown depths of the ocean. Our thematic programme of workshops and courses offer you the chance to dive into the ideas and artworks from the exhibitions. We’re also pleased to once again take part in Heritage Week and Culture Night with maritime-themed events that offer you imaginative ways to explore the harbour and seafaring culture of Cork. As ever, from tours that showcase the UCC Art Collection to hands-on workshops in painting and printmaking, there are all kinds of opportunities to discover your creative side at the GLUCKSMAN. You can find out more about our artistic programme on our website www.glucksman.org, on facebook.com/theGlucksman, by following us on twitter @glucksman, on instagram @theGlucksman or just by dropping in to say hello! We look forward to welcoming you. The GLUCKSMAN team

This gallery was a joy when it opened in 2004 and a symbol of national resilience when it re-opened in January 2010. President Mary McAleese, October 2011 The Glucksman is simply the best piece of public architecture in Ireland for decades. UK Times

The GLUCKSMAN is situated in the picturesque lower grounds of University College Cork. It houses three floors of galleries, a riverside restaurant, gift shop and dedicated education space.

The GLUCKSMAN was opened to the public by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, on 14 October 2004. Named in honour of one of its founding donors, the American financier and philanthropist, Lewis Glucksman, the gallery was named Best Public Building in Ireland in June 2005. Designed by Irish practice O'Donnell + Tuomey architects, the architecture of the gallery has been awarded several prestigious prizes including a UK Civic Trust award, a RIBA award and was included on the final shortlist for the 2005 Stirling Prize. There is a monograph on the GLUCKSMAN available from the gallery shop.

Now Wakes the Sea

Contemporary art and the ocean Artists have long been drawn to the ocean. From naturalistic seascapes to vivid depictions of aquatic life, its vastness, timelessness and mutability has fascinated poets, writers and artists for centuries. Titled after the 1963 short story by J.G Ballard, Now Wakes the Sea considers a resurgence of interest in the sea in contemporary art practices, presenting Irish and international artists whose work explores ideas of submersion and salvaging, the lure of the deep for seafarers, and the secrets hidden in its unseen trenches. In Ballard’s story, a man experiences nighttime visions of crashing waves encroaching upon his landlocked, suburban neighbourhood. This idea of the seductive but deadly lure of the sea resonates with the artworks in the exhibition which explore the ocean’s attraction, the sense of adventure which comes with taking to the open waves, and the primordial nature of the sea as a repository from which narratives and objects can be reclaimed. Artists: Tacita Dean, Marcel Dinahet, Sean Lynch, Maria McKinney, Conrad Shawcross, Lucy Skaer, Janaina Tschäpe, Andreas Kindler von Knobloch and Anna Zacharoff.

The above image is of Janaina Tschäpe’s Fernweh I. Her painting evokes the opacity of the ocean, its shimmering reflections and murky depths.

The curators of Now Wakes the Sea will lead a free tour of the exhibition at 1pm on Friday 13 October. Dr Kirstie North leads a free tour of the exhibition as part of Heritage Week. See p. 10 for further details

Exhibition continues until 5 November 2017

WEST CORK COASTAL CULTURES

Deep Maps

West Cork Coastal Cultures

Deep Maps is funded by the Irish Research Council and benefits from the additional support of the Office of the Vice-President for Teaching & Learning, UCC.

“Had a lovely afternoon wandering around here, overall a very interesting exhibition and a really beautiful space (+ lovely and friendly staff!). GLUCKSMAN visitor

Deep Maps is an interdisciplinary research project at UCC that investigates the biological, cultural, and historical context of the southwest coast of Ireland. In uniting current environmental priorities with a depth of historical and cultural knowledge, the project seeks to communicate both the fragility of the marine environment and the durability of coastal cultures. Deep mapping weaves together different narratives of place across time. Susan Naramore Maher describes a deep map as presenting ‘the multiple histories of place, the cross-sectional stories of natural and human history as traced through eons and generations.’ Through layered storytelling within digital environments, a deep map departs from literal cartography and seeks new forms of information-rich mapping. This exhibition focuses on the deep mapping of the West Cork coastline from Timoleague to Bantry Bay. Taking visitors on a journey from traditional cartography through objects of cultural value and scientific inquiry, it seeks to enrich our knowledge of the diverse ways in which culture connects us with our marine environment. The research project is led by Professor Claire Connolly and Dr Rob McAllen. The exhibition is curated by Dr Michael Waldron.

Exhibition continues until 5 November 2017

UCC Art Collection

Art on campus

The text on Sue Cunliffe’s lithograph (detail above) is an abridged version of a response to the work by art historian Kirstie North. You can read North’s entire text and see the artwork on display in the first floor of the O’Rahilly Building, UCC.

Guided tours are available of the collection and advance booking is required. Please see p.22 for more information.

Sue Cunliffe’s lithograph I Believe I’ll Only Live Once, 1989, shows a towering structure rising from the tumultous waves of the sea. The helter-skelter-like tower recalls the account of the Tower of Babel in the Book of Genesis where humanity seeks to build a tower tall enough to reach heaven. In Cunliffe’s image we see a female figure with a celestial air who seems at one with both the sea and the stars. She looks upon the tower with furrowed brow. Cunliffe’s work invites comparison with the work of Max Ernst as her surrealist juxtapositions of disparate imagery, often from historical sources or fairytales, are combined with hand gestures that tell stories. The narrative of the Tower of Babel speaks of a competition or conflict between man and god as does Cunliffe’s title I Believe I’ll only Live Once which rejects the creation myth and all ideas of the afterlife. Like much surrealist work this dreamlike image refers more to the internal than external world as the rising waves fill the woman’s heartspace, whilst the tower of language extends upwards into her head. The UCC Art Collection focuses on modern and contemporary Irish art. These works are sited throughout the campus to provide the UCC community and visitors with a first-hand encounter with original works of art.

Perspectives is a series of talks exploring themes and ideas from the current exhibitions. Addressing contemporary artistic, curatorial and critical practices, we welcome you to discover and learn about the key issues of contemporary art today. This season we consider how the ocean has inspired contemporary art practice from the perspective of artists participating in Now Wakes the Sea. Maria McKinney, artist Maria McKinney is a visual artist based in Dublin. She recently completed a significant body of work that considered the use of genomics in modern cattle-breeding, funded by the Wellcome Trust and Arts Council of Ireland Project Award. 1pm, Thursday 5 October 2017 Marcel Dinahet, artist Marcel Dinahet was born in 1943 in Finistère in western–most Brittany and has worked as a sculptor since the 1960s. About 30 years ago his practice shifted abruptly from sculpture to video, focusing on the seas, rivers, sources, ports, and the people who live and work in these spaces. 1pm, Thursday 19 October 2017

The group explored the processes and techniques involved in communicating stories and messages to large audiences. Arriving into View will culminate in the public launch of a large scale mural created by the group in Fitzgerald’s Park at 6pm on Culture Night Friday 22 September 2017. Supported by the Arts Council Young Ensemble Scheme Making Waves This Autumn, we welcome members of CHASE (Cork Harbour Alliance for a Safer Environment) to work with artist Carol-Anne Connolly on a creative project that draws on the group’s passion and knowledge for the Cork Harbour area.
