ARLINGTON SOCCER ASSOCIATION Director of Travel Coaching - March 2012 Arlington Soccer Association (http://www.arlingtonsoccer.com/), a premier youth soccer club located in Arlington, Virginia, is seeking a well-qualified individual to fill the position of Director of Travel Coaching starting June 1, 2012 (or earlier). Application deadline is April 15, 2012. In January 1970, a group of soccer parents wanting to enlarge the County’s youth soccer program met and formed the Arlington Soccer Association (ASA). Since then the program has grown to become one of the largest in Northern Virginia. ASA offers recreational and travel soccer, as well as a number of other camps, clinics and activities throughout the year. The recreational program serves more than 5000 children, while the travel program includes 55 teams with nearly 800 players competing in four different leagues (VCCL, NCSL, WAGS and ODSL). ASA has established a tradition of excellence in youth soccer and is looking to build on and broaden that tradition with the addition of a new Director of Travel Coaching. Director of Travel Coaching Position Description The Director of Travel Coaching (DOTC) is a full-time salaried position that has non-standard hours. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and oversees the travel coaching staff. ASA has recently re-organized the travel coaching staff to include: (1) a Director of Travel Coaching (DOTC), who has overall responsibility for all Travel program coaches, serves as the Age Group Director (AGD) of one of the three age group tiers, is expected to be the head coach of one team, and serves as the overall technical lead for the program, and (2) a Director of Player Development (DOPD), who is responsible for instituting and managing player development programs for travel soccer players, including camps, clinics, training curricula, player evaluation forms and other tools to help players develop to their full potential, and to coach two teams, and (3) three Age Group Directors (AGDs) for the U9-12, U13-15, and U16-19 age groups (the DOTC serves as one of these AGDs), who are responsible for recruiting and placing coaches in their respective age groups, managing those coaches pursuant to club standards, and working with the DOTC and the DOPD on matters relating to club development, and coaching up to two teams in their age groups, and (4) approximately 50 coaches. The person in the DOTC position interacts with the public, ASA staff and volunteers, and other organizations on ASA’s behalf, including serving as ASA’s representative on the Board of Directors

of the Virginia Club Champions League (VCCL). The DOTC may serve on the state coaching staff and, if qualified, conduct state coaching education courses. Qualifications: Licensure: USSF A license or NSCAA equivalent preferred (or equivalent foreign licensure), and National Youth License required (or plans to acquire the National Youth License within 12 months). Playing Experience: College or equivalent preferred Coaching Experience: Prefer someone with experience as the Director of Coaching for a competitive youth travel soccer program, or a minimum 10 years youth coaching experience, or 5 years as Professional or College Head Coach. All ASA staff must pass annual background checks. Other: • • • • • • • • •

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • • • • • • • •

Recruit and assign qualified coaches in conjunction with Age Group Directors Train and monitor coaches and help them plan and implement training sessions in conjunction with AGDs Work with the DOPD and AGDs each year to develop the coach rotation (placement) in accordance with ASA policy for the coming soccer year Coordinate with the DOPD and AGDs to promote a club-wide training program Attend meetings of the Travel Committee and assist in development of Travel Program policies Ensure the balanced provision and utilization of resources for all Travel teams across gender, age group, and league divisions Provide guidance to coaches on match management and how to interact with parents and club officials. Conduct age-specific coaches’ clinics

Work with the DOPD and AGDs to create a club-wide player development model from U9 to U19s Design and administer (with help from the AGDs) a coaching education program Develop a Coaching Manual and a Coaches Orientation Manual Update the club’s standard coaching evaluation process Working with the DOPD, annually assess the club’s player evaluation process Coordinate with the Director of ASA’s annual Spring travel tournament on team recruitment and other issues Network with Directors of Coaching and Tournament Directors from other clubs Coordinate ASA’s activities in the VCCL, including working with other clubs’ DOCs on game scheduling and making sure that administrative aspects of VCCL game weekends are covered. Participate in VCCL meetings and conference calls. Communicate VCCL issues. With help from coaches and the AGDs, identify most talented players in the club and alert State and Regional coaches for possible inclusion in State and Regional teams As part of the review process (with help from the AGDs) for each team’s Yearly Plan, oversee tournament selections and other team activities to ensure proper team and player development Ensure all coaches develop and submit Yearly Plans defining their team’s activities through the year Design and administer the annual player tryout process Assist in the design of a parent education program Assist in the design of a college recruiting program and educate players and parents on college playing opportunities Represent the Club at functions, meetings, and events as directed by the Executive Director Maintain the Club library of books, videos, and other coaching materials Ensure that all Travel teams and coaches comply with established policies, goals and objectives Support coaches as needed, including filling in for practice sessions (when communicated appropriately) Additional tasks or duties as required
