This year’s holiday art installation, Good Energy Tree, focuses on the power and possibilities of the bicycle. Biking not only enables low-cost transportation, but also promotes a healthy, active, sustainable lifestyle. At the base of the tree, Montgomery County Commuter Services and Capital BikeShare have generously provided 12 of their incredible bikes for your pedaling pleasure. You are invited to hop on these bikes and pedal away just to stretch your legs OR to charge your cell phone. These bikes are connected to a 300w generator which can provide power to a USB port and to battery banks that help to power the lights on the tree. You’ll be able to see how much power you are producing with corresponding gauges and light clusters in front of each bike. Contributing to the clean power theme, we have several solar panels and a wind-powered topper. The bikes on the tree are all individually lit and will be donated at the end of the season to local non-profit, A Wider Circle. In the breezeway, leading to and from the Wayne Avenue garage, we take the bicycle theme and create some fun, whimsical sculptures. Suspended from the arched ceiling, various wheels, gears, pulleys and frame parts lazily revolve in choreographed arcs. Multi-colored plexiglass panels are interlaced into the spokes and lit from above creating a dazzling array of patterns projected onto the floor. All the components in these works of art are sourced from various bike rehabilitation programs.
ABOUT THE ARTISTs Award-winning designer/fabricator Jon Taylor and internationally acclaimed public artist Karl Unnasch have partnered together on Downtown Silver Spring’s Re-Imagining the Holidays art installation for the past three years.
