Arts 279 – Toon Boom Studio Mondays 1:40 - 5:15 PM in I Building, Room 212 Tom Eaton [email protected] www.goodeaton.com/tbs This class is an introduction to the program Toon Boom Studio. We’ll be covering traditional animation techniques and the animation production process while applying them in Toon Boom. Though Toon Boom is geared towards hand drawn art, and drawing skills will be useful for this class, they are not required as we will also be going over different techniques. Class will culminate in a final animated project. And we’ll watch cartoons! Calendar: (Subject to change) 1 – 9/8 – Discussion of class. Toon Boom/animation overview. Why is traditional 2-d animation so cool? Assignment: Get class materials. 2 – 9/15 – Animation Basics: Key Frames/inbetweens. Squash & stretch. Timing. Exercise: Pendulum & bouncing ball. 3 – 9/22 – Character Designs and Models. Rotations, Backgrounds/Assets, Library. 9/29: No Class. 4 – 10/6 – Posing, inbetweens. 5 – 10/14 (Monday Sched.) – Animation production flow: Exposure sheet/Timeline. 6 – 10/20 – Animation production flow: Pegs/camera/sceneplanning/multiplaning 7 – 10/27 – Animation production flow: Idea/Script/Storyboard/Animatic. 8 – 11/3 – Lip sync/Track reading. 9 – 11/10 – Begin Final project: Ani-jam. Screening: Life. Assignment: Create Images, start storyboards. 10 – 11/17 – Work on final project: Animatic and rough timing. 11 – 11/24 – Output methods. Animate. 12 – 12/1 – Animate. 13 – 12/8 – Animate, and add any sound fx. -Use soundsnap.com, or record your own.

2 14 – 12/15 – Last Day of Class, Project due - Final Review. Watch the whole thing together & discuss. Requirements: Attendance is crucial, as this is a lab class and learning depends on in-class work. Outside work and homework is usually limited to whatever doesn’t get completed in class. Please be on time as we will review the previous week’s work at the beginning of class, and this counts towards your participation. Grading: 30% In Class Exercises* 10% Class Participation 60% Final project (ani-jam) *In-class exercises not completed in class are still expected to be finished on your own time for credit. Rubric for grading exercises/project: A: Well executed project, utilizes many tools and concepts covered, shows creative flair. Full animation & well timed. B: Demonstrating understanding of relevant principles through solid execution. C or less: Project does not demonstrate learned technique, difficult to understand. Materials: *Wacom tablet & pen (Graphire or Bamboo recommended) *USB Flash drive (2 GB or more) *Toon Boom Manual: Can be ordered online @ Academic Superstore or the Toon Boom website.
