Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools Competition Guideline Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS), organised by Hwa Chong Institution, has evolved from the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for primary schools. It is an annual event that began in 1990 and has gone from strength to strength. It is now one of the most influential mathematics competitions and is held in many different countries and regions, including Australia, New Zealand, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, People’s Republic of China (Shanghai, Hainan), Hong Kong and Taiwan. A. Aims Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools aims to generate greater interest in mathematics among students. Independent thinking and creativity of the talented pupils can be strengthened through participating in the competition. Pupils’ horizons can also be widened by the international cultural exchange. The Competition 1. First Round Competition is held by the Co-Organiser in the participated region/country in April every year. Participants are required to complete 30 closed questions, with a maximum of 150 points. The question papers and the marking are standardised by the organising committee of the competition (organiser). 2. Selected top individual participants will be invited to Singapore to participate in an annual Invitation Competition (Final Round) in May. The candidates will need to complete 6 problem sums, with a maximum of 60 points. 3. The question paper can be completed in Chinese or English.

Eligibility 1. All eligible participants should be Primary 6 students who were born between 2 January 2001 and 1 January 2002. 2. Each participating school can nominate 6 primary six students to participate in the competition. The morning session and the afternoon session of bi-sessional schools can register separately; therefore each of the respective sessions can nominate 6 students each. 3. Applications for the Individual Competition should be submitted by the participants' parents. There are no limit for the number of participants. 4. All participants' "Individual result" will be calculated.

Rules 1. Only eligible participants may enter. No fraudulent information may be submitted. Participants should be eligible. Participants not conforming to the above will be disqualified from the competition. 2. Details of the participants cannot be changed without valid reasons. Unauthorised changes will result in disqualification. 3. Each team of participants should be escorted by the Teacher- in-charge or parents to the competition centre. 4. All participants should bring their student handbooks or ID documents (with photo) and the registration cards for registration. Participants who cannot conform to the above will be disqualified from the competition. All participants should conform to the instructions from the invigilators during the competition and should not disturb or distract other participants. 5. All participants should bring their own stationeries such as pencils, pens and erasers etc. Participants are not allowed to bring calculators, MP3 players and mobile phones to the competition centre. 6. In the event of any dispute, the organising committee shall be the sole arbitrator and its decision shall be final. All personal particulars will be destroyed before the next competition. 7. The committee reserves the right to publish the photos or videos taken during the competition and the price giving ceremony in any promotional,

exhibition or printing materials, without seeking any further permission from or paying any costs to the schools or students participated.

Team Competition The total score of the three highest students in each school will be ranked to win the Champion, the second-runner up, the third runner up and the outstanding award. The winning schools will receive cup awards. All participants will receive a certificate of participation issued by the organizer. 2. Invitation Round (Final Round) The organising committee will select top individuals to represent Hong Kong to participate in the Invitation Competition according to the individual results and the total number of participants. The ratio of the selected top winners to the total number of participants will be 1:50. Participants are responsible for all travel and insurance costs. The organiser will sponsor food and accommodation.
