Apply on line only at : www.vhparkdistrict.org POSITION: Athletic Field Maintenance Specialist Vernon Hills Park District Vernon Hills, Illinois 60061 FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt Immediate Supervisor: Parks Foreman SUMMARY The Athletic Field Maintenance Specialist is responsible for undertaking and completing routine and special projects for athletic fields and areas related to athletic fields. In addition the Athletic Field Maintenance Specialist is lead person for organization of maintenance needs in respects to athletic special events such as tournaments. Work is of a special nature that requires in-depth knowledge of athletic fields and grounds maintenance. The Athletic Field Maintenance Specialist will determine and schedule all tasks required to keep the athletic fields in peak condition. The Athletic Field Maintenance Specialist will be responsible for general park staff maintenance duties during down times from athletic field maintenance. QUALIFICATIONS: High school, trade or vocational school graduate with a minimum of four years experience in athletic field maintenance, landscaping, or grounds keeping. Graduate from a two-year college curriculum specializing in turf management or park and grounds maintenance preferred. Must possess knowledge of landscape construction and turf management. Must be able to proficiently use a computer as both organization and communication. A valid Illinois State Drivers License is required, with safe driving record. • •
Valid Illinois Pesticide Operators License CPR and AED certification within one year
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential Job Functions 1. Responsible for maintenance and preparation of all athletic fields. Performs specialized work on baseball, softball, and soccer fields. Maintains fields in a high quality manner. 2. Schedules maintenance on all athletic fields and leads staff to ensure schedules are met. 3. Prepares athletic fields for play including striping, dragging and leveling fields. Will lay sod, repair worn out turf, spread seed, apply fertilizer, top dress and control weeds. Will properly level and maintain pitcher mounds and batter boxes.
4. Prior to each season, monitor and maintain field lips and edges. 5. Assists in the preparation of the budget line items within the Parks department budget pertaining to athletic field and special event labor, equipment, and supplies. 6. Maintains and conducts safety inspections of dug outs, player benches, fences, spectator bleachers, backstops, goal posts, basketball and tennis courts and other related site amenities. 7. Inspects athletic fields and keeps documentation of all inspections. 8. Maintains inventory of athletic field maintenance items and equipment including field paint, chalk, calcined clay and repair parts. 9. Schedules off-season work on athletic fields 10. Operates and maintains the appearance of hand tools, power equipment, trucks, tractors, heavy equipment, landscaping equipment, snow removal equipment and all other equipment pertaining to this position 11. Possesses a thorough knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials used in field operations. 12. Performs general maintenance duties as assigned when not performing athletic field responsibilities. Has knowledge and experience in the general care and maintenance of parks and facilities. 13. Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required. 14. Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the District’s Risk Management policy. 15. Will develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and externalcustomers through oral and written communications. Will respond to internal and external phone calls, e-mails, comments and suggestions in a timely manner. Will promote the District to patrons, guests and staff.
