LANCASTER PUBLIC LIBRARY
Autism Resource Center
A
ccording to the Autism Society, “early diagnosis and intervention can lead to significantly improved outcomes. With the right services and supports, people with autism can live full, healthy and meaningful lives.” The Autism Resource Center at the Lancaster Public Library aims to provide support to the autistic community through much needed materials on the autism spectrum of disorders and related issues. Some of the topics include teaching social skills, behavioral therapy, conflict resolution, and community awareness and interaction. Additionally, signage throughout the library has been specifically designed to assist autistic patrons in navigating the building.
The Autism Resource Center has a special collection of books and audio visual materials. This unique collection includes resources for teachers, therapeutic support staff, and individuals and families who work and live with autism. Most materials are available for loan and in-library use. The collection includes work by Temple Grandin and Tony Attwood among other prominent authors in the field of autism.
Additionally, the Autism Resource Center is equipped with computer access and Boardmaker software. Boardmaker is a program that uses clip art of picture communication symbols which are used in creating printed communication boards, device overlays, worksheets, and schedules. This program is used to enhance learning and communication as well as reinforce common educational, behavioral, and functional living skills.
