welcome

The start of the Awesome Arts Festival commences one of my favourite times of year. Where else can you turn a corner and see a man in cow costumed being patted adoringly by giggling kids?

Welcome to our dedicated festival guide for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We hope that this guide helps you to make decisions about what to attend (and what not to attend) at the 2017 AWESOME Festival.

The Festival has been a worldwide pioneer in developing ways to include all children in their truly awesome program, no matter their strengths or challenges. The autism guide is perhaps the best example of this that I have seen in the world. The guide provides useful and understandable information about the sights, sounds and content of each different performance. Given that many kids on spectrum can be hypersensitive to different sensory experiences, the information is absolutely crucial to provide a Festival that is inclusive to all. I cannot recommend the Festival highly enough. I will be there with my kids, watching their smiles, and listening to them teach me about every new discovery they encounter. What a time of year!

Knowing that every child with ASD is an individual with individual needs, we have done our best to gather information about events within the festival program, but ultimately it is the parents and carers who are best placed to understand their child’s needs and responses and to make decisions about what to attend. This guide aims to support you in these decisions. Call us! If you need some more information regarding a show or a workshop, please don’t hesitate to call us in the AWESOME Office on 9328 9666 during business hours. Feedback: In developing this guide we are hoping to create a model that other events and venues can use to be more welcoming of people with ASD. We’d genuinely love your feedback as it is import for us to learn what works for you and what needs improving. To complete the survey please visit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2017asdguide Many thanks,

Moo! Team AWESOME Professor Andrew Whitehouse Angela Wright Bennett Professor of Autism Research Telethon Kids Institute and the University of Western Australia

ImportanT Info Using The Guide: Within the guide you will find a rating grid at the bottom of each page. We encourage parents to utilise the grid to measure the difficulty of each activity between 1 and 5 (1 being ‘easy peasy’ and 5 being ‘extremely difficult’). This may assist in making descisions about what to see and do, appropriate to the individual needs of your child. Concession Tickets: Thanks to support from the State Government through the Department of Local government, Sport and Cultural Industries, AWESOME is able to offer a limited number of concession priced tickets to Health Care and Pension Card Holders. Visit awesomearts.com/concession for full terms and conditions and a full list of events. Companion Cards: If you hold a companion card, you are entitled to one free admission to all of our events. If you have any issues or questions regarding ticketing, please contact our office during business hours on 9328 9666. Our Team: If you find yourself in need of assistance, please feel confident to approach one of our team (in AWESOME Festival t-shirts or high-vis vests). It may be something as simple as needing to get into a venue early, or to ensure that you get seating that is appropriate, assistance leaving a venue during a show, or finding a quiet spot to chill out. To make it easy, all you need to do is approach a team member and say that you have a child with special needs. Our team will be briefed to assist you in any way that they can. Quiet Zones: Sometimes the Festival ‘vibe’ can be overwhelming or overstimulating for children and you just need somewhere quiet to wind down. To this end we have identified a number of quiet spots on the festival site: • • • •

Adapted for the Stage by Dan Giovannoni & Luke Kerridge from Bambert’s Buch der verschollenen Geschicten by Reinhardt Jung. Winner of the 2016 Helpmann Award for Best Children’s Presentation. The astonishing Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories makes a triumphant return to Perth. In this delightfully theatrical and totally magical production, Reinhardt Jung’s internationally-lauded novel is brought to life in an inventive and enchanting production for children and adults alike. This is the story of Bambert – an impossibly small man with an enormous love for writing. Tucked away in his quiet attic, his only companions are the characters he has created in his stories. Bambert sets his stories free, sending them out into the world on little balloons, in the hope that they will find a home. The stories contain instructions: whoever finds them is to return them to Bambert with a stamp from wherever they landed, so he knows where they should be set. But as each day passes, and no stories return, Bambert’s hope begins to fade. Will his stories ever find a home?

Guy Davis is an accomplished, self-taught musician, composer, and actor. Guy often brings a modern chord structure and free-flowing storytelling qualities to traditional blues. His influences are varied but remain rooted in the rural traditions; his inspiration lies as much in the work of great bluesmen of the past as in the storytelling heard at his grandmother’s knee.

Touch & Go is a dancing game of cause and effect, dedicated to the mighty two-year old. Touch & Go entices, dares and entertains children in a playful environment. 2 year olds are invited to enter a playful world of shapes and pathways, stepping stones and lines, with two friendly dancers and a live guitarist. The children become part of the performance themselves or observe from a safe distance, touching and going - just as they need to. The show begins with the audience seated in an audience area, but about 10 minutes in to the action there is an invitation for this divide to be removed and for everyone to spread out in the space as they wish to. The show proceeds with dance to view interspersed with specific invitations to the children to join in with the action, ideally with their adults.

Join textile artist Lex Randolph and the WA Museum to create a coral reef that reflects the importance, colour, vibrancy and life beneath the surface of the ocean around our Western Australian coastline. With many of the reefs around the world being affected by climate change, it’s more important than ever to recognise their significance, function and beauty. As part of the fun you will learn how we can do our part to protect these treasures for future generations. Using wool, fabric and other natural found objects, contribute to our coral reef installation and help us to create something beautiful at the 2017 AWESOME Festival!

Catch Madame Lark with her musical-saw as she takes flight vocally around the city, whipping up her own alphabet of vocal interpretations developed after her childhood synaesthesia, where objects became imbued with sound. Along with her peculiar fascination with hairstyles and shapes, Madame Lark offers an affectionate and surprisingly accurate nod to the guttural chatter and warblings of the birdcalls around us. Multitalented Australian artist Christine Johnston, best known as one third of The Kransky Sisters, will delight all ages with her harmonious symphony of ridiculousness.

My Story My Home is a photography exhibition revealing both the diversity and the commonality within between and across the Muslim and wider communities. World Press Photo Perth and the Australian Islamic College designed and delivered a project around 25 Muslim youth who could take the lead, sharing their homes and stories, countering the dominant media narrative. Students’ images were not the story but a portal to their stories. This exhibition aims to inspire conversations and show the diversity and the common connections within, between and across Perth and the world.

In 2017 AWESOME’s Creative Challenge artist-in-residency program has visited regional, rural and metro communities, engaging young people in process driven workshops that focus on giving young people a voice and encouraging them to share their stories. The theme ‘I Hear You’ has been reflected throughout these residencies, looking at how we as a community can better communicate, listen to others around us, and listen to ourselves. These ideas have been expressed through a wide variety of art forms that focused on teaching new skills to the participants involved.
