WELCOME
PROMISES KEPT Greetings, It's with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2013 North American International Auto Show. You're not only attending a great auto show, truly one of the best in the world, you're participating in the 25th occasion of the NAIAS. Some of you may remember when this event was known simply as the "Detroit Auto Show," aptly named in 1907 since its focus was regional. But something important happened in 1989. Show organizers took a big step forward, and a group of innovative local auto dealers hit the road to call on global auto manufacturers with a plan and a promise. I was fortunate to be part of that group, which also included George Gorno, Ken Meade, Gordon Stewart, David Fischer, Robert Thibodeau, Sr., and the late Heinz Prechter. We traveled to Europe and Asia equipped with a plan of transforming our local show into a world class event. After all, we represented the Motor City, and our show should absolutely be an industry leader. "You bring the product unveilings, and we'll bring the media," we promised. Fast forward 25 years and today our show -- your show -- no longer has a regional focus, but a global one. The NAIAS has earned a top spot among business strategies of virtually every car maker in the world. And that, my friends, is good for our city, our state and our region, because the economic impact of the NAIAS is placed at $350-$375 million. More than the Super Bowl. More than the World Series. More than the Stanley Cup playoffs. At NAIAS you'll see brilliant new vehicles, more than 750 of them, along with educational and interactive displays designed by young, creative minds, which continue to be attracted to the auto industry. The industry is changing before our very eyes, and the latest advancements (some of which haven't been seen publically) are here at Cobo Center in a refreshing display of what's right with the auto industry. So, here's the bottom line that bears repeating: NAIAS is routinely compared to shows in Geneva, Frankfurt, Paris, Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai because of the product debuts that take place here. Remember the promise? ("You bring the cars, we'll bring the media.") At NAIAS 2013, more than 50 new vehicles were unveiled (most of them worldwide premieres), and nearly 6,000 journalists came from more countries than I can name. Promises kept. Enjoy the show.

FAMILY
CAR FEUD T Automakers battle for heart of the market with a full lineup of redesigned sedans BY DALE JEWETT
HERE’S A MAJOR battle brewing in the midsize-sedan market for 2013. All the key players— Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Nissan and Toyota—have completely redesigned their bread-and-butter vehicles. Styling has taken on greater importance, from the Aston Martin-esque grille of the Ford Fusion to the undulating character lines of the Nissan Altima
and Honda Accord. And Mazda isn’t far behind with a redesigned Mazda 6 for 2014. The new sedans bring a host of fuel-saving technologies—engines with direct fuel injection and variable-valve timing, continuously variable transmissions, standard and plug-in hybrid powertrains and safety systems heretofore limited to luxury brands. The race is on to reach and exceed 40 mpg highway with a car that comfortably hauls
ACURA ILX HIGHLIGHTS: Acura’s
ILX is an entry-level compact luxury sedan available with three four-cylinder powertrains: a 2.0-liter, a 2.4-liter and a 1.5-liter hybrid. the entire family. But it’s not all about new mid-size sedans. Fuel economy ranks high on every automaker’s to-do list. So the spectrum of 2013 debuts ranges from the Chevy Spark city car to performance cars from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz that use smaller, turbocharged engines to deliver more power and better gas mileage. There’s never been a better time to go for a drive.
able seats and room for five adults. To make up for lack of center-console space, Acura added a second glovebox. BASE PRICE: $26,795 OUR OPINION: The new ILX is stylish, luxurious and fun to drive. It is a worthy contender in a segment that has cars such as the Audi A3, Lexus CT 200h and Buick Verano.

AUDI S7 HIGHLIGHTS: The
all-new Audi S7 is powered by a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 that makes 420 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. In order to achieve improved fuel economy despite the power boost, the S7’s cylinder-on-demand system cuts the use of four
cylinders when cruising at highway speeds. It also gets an air-spring suspension, mechanically actuating sport differentials with torque vectoring, a seven-speed dual-clutch sequential manual transmission, carbon-ceramic front brakes and lots of S7specific interior features that
set it apart from the A7 upon which it’s based. BASE PRICE: $79,695 OUR OPINION: We didn’t get onto a racetrack, and this isn’t really a track car. It’s too heavy for that. But as an allaround useful family sedan that can be driven with glee, it is a great success.
AUDI S8
The third-gen S8 is the most powerful sedan in Audi’s lineup—and the most luxurious. Moving from a V10 to a 4.0-liter twinturbocharged V8 that delivers 520 hp, this Audi S8 produces 15 percent more power while using 20 percent less fuel than the previous model year. Audi’s cylinder-on-demand system aids in fuel economy by cutting four of the eight cylinders when cruising at highway speeds. An eightspeed automatic transmission also helps in fuel-reduction efforts. In addition to being able to select drive modes, this car’s sport-tuned chassis with adaptive air suspension also offers three ride heights. Keeping with its bespoke theme, front seating can be adjusted in 22 different ways and comes heated, ventilated and with a massage function. BASE PRICE: $110,895 OUR OPINION: An excellent choice for carving up daily rush-hour traffic, or loading up the family and their gear for a weekend getaway. HIGHLIGHTS:
AUDI RS5
Packed with 450 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, the 4.2liter V8 for the RS5 aims to please . . . well, more than please. Perhaps “exhilarate” would be more appropriate. As the ultra-sporty version of the A5, the RS5 uses a sevenspeed S-tronic transmission. The top speed is electronically

limited to 174 mph. The sporttuned suspension rides 0.8inch lower than the standard A5, adding to the look and drive feel of the car. Another sweet characteristic is the rear spoiler, which rises automatically when the vehicle hits 75 mph or more. Other exterior appointments that set this car apart include oversized air inlets for the engine, a tapered front bumper, flared fenders and outside mirrors covered in matte aluminum. Inside, buyers will enjoy napa leather upholstery (Alcantara is optional), a flat-bottom steering wheel, a driver-information system capable of recording

BMW M6 After a two-year gap, the M6 returns to BMW’s lineup. You have a choice of coupe or convertible. Under the hood is the same 560-hp turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 used in the M5 sedan. Power flows through the seven-speed dual clutch to the Active M differential on the rear axle. Buyers have the option of adding carbon-ceramic brakes with 20-inch wheels—the ideal

combination of looks and performance. BASE PRICE: $106,995 (coupe)/$113,995 (convertible) OUR OPINION: The hardware for the top pushes the M6 convertible’s curb weight up to 4,500 pounds. But the thrust from the engine and the long list of electronic traction and stability technologies will make sure the M6 performs like a member of the BMW M family—and you’ll look good doing it, too.

lap times, rearview camera, adaptive cruise control and a navigation system synced with Google Earth for panoramic, 3-D and aerial views of the route you plan to travel. BASE PRICE: $69,795 OUR OPINION: If this car meets your needs on paper, it will likely fulfill them on the road. At nearly $70,000, it isn’t cheap. But nor does it shortchange the driver in any way. Fast, handsome and capable, the RS5 is rolling confirmation

of Audi’s rising role in the automotive world.
BMW M5
The 2013 model marks the fifth generation of the BMW M5 sedan. And the biggest change is that the M5 gets a turbocharged V8 engine for the first time—a 4.4-liter unit cranking out 560 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. And the M5 gets 30 percent better fuel economy than its predecessor, BMW says. Even better: You can mate that engine to a six-

speed manual transmission at no extra charge or opt for the seven-speed dual-clutch unit. BASE PRICE: $92,095 OUR OPINION: This is not just a hopped-up 5-series sedan. Most of the components are specific to the M5. And even though it weighs 4,100 pounds, this M5 is considerably faster than the one it replaces. Layer in a whole suite of electronic aids, and the M5 will make you feel like a superhero.
BMW 6-SERIES GRAN COUPE HIGHLIGHTS: So you like the look of a coupe but need the functionality of a back seat. BMW offers you the 6-series Gran Coupe as an alternative to the Mercedes-Benz CLS and
Audi A7. There are four doors and what BMW calls 4+1 seating—the middle passenger in the back seat straddles the transmission tunnel. Buyers can choose from a 315-hp inline six or 445-hp V8, and the V8 can be equipped with all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission available. The rear seatback folds flat to boost cargo room. BASE PRICE: $76,895 OUR OPINION: Whereas the Mercedes-Benz and Audi four-doors are geared toward performance, the 6-series Grand Coupe can be dialed up to sporty intentions with a Driving Dynamics system that adjusts suspension, throttle response and steering effort. You can drive this coupe over

CADILLAC ATS
CHEVROLET MALIBU
The redesigned 2013 Chevrolet Malibu got an early launch last spring with GM’s mild hybrid powertrain. The full lineup of Malibus arrives this fall, with the new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 197 hp mated to a six-speed automatic. Or you can step up to the turbocharged 2.0-liter four (see page 34), which cranks out 259 hp. The new Malibu is almost as aerodynamic as the Chevy Volt. The reworked cabin has more room and is covered in higher-quality materials. BASE PRICE: $23,150 HIGHLIGHTS:
CADILLAC ATS
The all-new Cadillac ATS is available in rear- or all-wheel drive and in four trims: Standard, Luxury, Performance and Premium. Buyers will be able to choose between a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 272 hp, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder offering 202 hp and a 3.6-liter V6 capable of 321 hp. All of these are expected to deliver highway fuel economy of more than 30 mpg. A sophisticated suspension paired with magnetic-ride control and available Brembo performance brakes combine to further enhance this Cadillac’s competitive drive feel. Cadillac’s next-generation infotainment system, the Cadillac User Experience (CUE), will be featured in the ATS. This cutting-edge technology allows drivers to use the same actions they’ve become accustomed with on tablets and smartphones with an eight-inch color touchscreen display in the car. Swipe to move to the next screen or tap to select an option; CUE recognizes these movements and others. What’s even more impressive, CUE is able to pair info and entertainment data from up to 10 Bluetoothenabled mobile devices. BASE PRICE: $33,990 OUR OPINION: The ATS is fundamentally solid and inherently balanced. Its three engine options start near the top in terms of output and technology. The car offers rear- or all-wheel drive out of the box, and its power-toweight ratios are best in class. With the ATS, Cadillac finally has a second sedan that Audi/BMW/Mercedes drivers (or wannabes) might actually HIGHLIGHTS:

CHEVROLET MALIBU
CADILLAC XTS For those who miss seeing a large sedan in the Cadillac lineup, the XTS is for you. The base XTS is a front-driver, but you can order up all-wheel drive. Still, there’s no V8—at least not yet. The only engine is a 304-hp V6 with a six-speed automatic. But you do get magnetic-ride shocks and rear air suspension as standard. The XTS also gets the HIGHLIGHTS:
CUE driver interface. $44,995 OUR OPINION: Here is a car the traditional Cadillac buyer can be comfortable with, as the rest of the brand shifts more toward a Euro-sedan attitude. The V6 is geared to pull away smartly from stops, while the magnetic ride suspension will smooth out most road imperfections while minimizing any body lean. BASE PRICE:

AUTOWEEK.COM 2013 CAR BUYERS GUIDE GM engineers went to work on the Malibu’s suspension, even after the Eco version launched. The result is a well-controlled ride that lets the Malibu glide over small bumps, but really grips the road in the corners. The 2.5liter four-cylinder engine is strong. Its seats are comfortable and rear passengers get more legroom. The cabin, overall, feels luxurious. We wish there were a manual with the 2.0-liter turbo.
OUR OPINION:
CHEVROLET SPARK The Spark enters Chevy’s lineup as the smallest car offered by the brand. It’s powered by a 1.2liter I4 that makes 84 hp and 82 lb-ft of torque. A fivespeed manual transmission is standard, but Chevy offers an optional four-speed automatic. Safety is a big concern with small cars, so Chevy jammed the Spark with 10 airbags and high-strength steel for extra rigidity. Buyers can choose between three trims: HIGHLIGHTS:

LS, 1LT and 2LT. BASE PRICE: $12,995 OUR OPINION: This is undoubtedly one of the best-equipped, mostconventional options in the growing number of “city car” segment. The well-sorted suspension won’t beat you up, and there’s enough room in the back that you won’t risk ending a friendship by asking someone to ride back there. It’s noisy on the freeway, but the radio can counteract that.

DODGE DART
The Dodge Dart is the first all-new vehicle to come out of the Fiat/Chrysler partnership. The compact car rides on a modified Alfa Romeo Giulietta platform and is available in five trim levels with three engine choices, three transmission choices, 12 exterior-color choices, 14 interior-trim combinations and what Dodge says are more than 100,000 ways in which to configure it. The Dart—with its bold styling, sport-tuned suspension and interior unlike that of other compacts in the market—stands out among competitors. The three engines range from the base 2.0-liter fourcylinder making 160 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque to a 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged fourcylinder making 160 hp and 184 lb-ft and a 2.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder making 184 hp and 171 lb-ft. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual or automatic, and a six-speed dualclutch that is available on turbo models. This is a significant vehicle for Chrysler, and it seems the company has given the car every opportunity to be a hit. 䡲 FORD FOCUS ST The Ford Focus ST picks up where the SVT version left off after the 2004 model year by transforming the pedestrian Focus into a true enthusiast’s ride. There’s a high-output engine under the hood, a sport suspension, and an interior dressed with some serious seats and equipment. The

䡲 SRT VIPER
After a two-year break, the Viper is back— re-engineered to be a touch more civilized and comfortable but with all the snarl of its predecessor. The reworked 8.4-liter V10 loses 25 pounds but puts out an additional 40 hp to 640 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. That power flows through a Tremec six-speed manual. Traction and launch control are standard, and electronic two-mode Bilstein dampers are available on the range-topping GTS model. The new Viper is more rigid, which helps with handling and steering. An optional track package cuts 57 pounds
from the curb weight. $99,390 OUR OPINION: The previous Viper had a raw, brutal nature to it. The SRT Viper has been tamed a bit but is still a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack and the street. The upgraded interior is more comfortable, while everything under the hood is as menacing as we want it.
Focus ST gets a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine with direct fuel injection, turbocharging and twin independent variable camshaft timing. All of that adds up to 252 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. An overboost feature extends peak torque for 15 seconds at a time. And every ST also gets a six-speed manual gearbox. The options list includes
Recaro sport seats. BASE PRICE: $24,495
All of that extra oomph is apparent right off the bat, but the power delivery feels linear and smooth, not peaky. The ride is bit rough, but not enough to make us complain. The best part is the price, which makes this car the one to beat among all the hot hatchbacks.

FORD FUSION
䡲 FERRARI F12 BERLINETTA
The F12 replaces the 599 in Ferrari’s lineup, with a 731-hp V12 up front driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The powertrain is a refined version of the unit used in the Ferrari FF. The F12 is slightly smaller than the 599 and weighs about 150 pounds less, due in part to its all-aluminum body construction. The styling signature on the F12 is the “aero bridge,” a straight piece of bodywork that covers the gap in each front-quarter panel created by the wheel arch.

Ducts at the rear channel airflow to the decklid spoiler. BASE PRICE: $300,000 (est) OUR OPINION: The performance of this Ferrari is phenomenal, yet the F12 is quite at home rolling down the boulevard. You won’t sacrifice comfort to get near-Formula One levels of
performance. Just be prepared to wait in line to get one.

HONDA ACCORD The Accord sedan and coupe are back for 2013 (see page 30) with a fresh powertrain lineup under the company’s Earth Dreams banner that includes a new direct-injection fourcylinder and an updated V6, plus a revised transmission portfolio that includes a continuously variable transmission. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 185 hp and 189 lb-ft of torque, notable improvements over the outgoing base 2.4-liter engine. Connected to the four-cylinder is a standard six-speed manual or a CVT that replaces the five-speed automatic. Unlike competitors, Honda sticks with a V6 as the upgraded-engine option instead of moving to a forceinduced four-cylinder. The revised 3.5-liter V6 gains an expanded variable cylinder management range for improved fuel economy and sees a small horsepower bump from 271 to 278. Also, Honda is working on
HIGHLIGHTS:
The main draw of the Fusion is that it offers powertrains for just about everybody: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder (170 hp), two four-cylinder EcoBoost options (a 1.6-liter that gets 179 hp and a 2.0-liter that makes 237 hp), one hybrid and one plug-in hybrid.

two hybrid Accords—a plugin and a regular one. Both are developed around a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle fourcylinder with a 13:1 compression ratio, a two-motor hybrid system and lithium-ion battery pack. In the plug-in, the engine and electric motors are good for 198 hp and 225 lbft of torque. Honda says electric-only range for the plug-in is 10-15 miles on a fully charged battery. The coupe is there for customers looking for a sportier twodoor that has back-seat space for two adults, and the hot V6 and six-speed-manual drivetrain combo. BASE PRICE: $22,470 OUR OPINION: Honda has delivered a fuel-efficient vehicle lineup that caters to a wide audience. The new direct-injected four-cylinder is powerful enough and, when paired with the new CVT, should please the heart of the market, while the potent V6 remains at the top of the range for shoppers willing to swap a bit of fuel economy for more power.
Transmissions are varied, as well, the base Fusion equipped with a six-speed automatic, the SE trim allowing for a manual transmission option and the hybrid coming with a continuously variable transmission. The 2013 Fusion interior

also went through a remodel and was reborn with improved seats, more interior space, an electronic parking brake and a modified center console. BASE PRICE: $22,495 OUR OPINION: The Aston Martin-esque exterior design is our segment favorite, delivering a serious dose of character in the typically bland and predictable sedan arena. With such a wide variety of powertrains available, there’s something for everybody, which is just
what Ford needs to do to keep up with the competition.
LEXUS LS
The flagship sedan of the Lexus family gets new sheetmetal and interior changes for 2013, although the basic mechanicals stay the same. There are still regularand long-wheelbase versions, and the LS 600h L hybrid remains in the lineup. Lexus is adding an F-Sport model— it rolls with a Torsen limitedslip differential, Brembo brakes and 19-inch wheels—

AUTOWEEK.COM 2013 CAR BUYERS GUIDE but this is not a Lexus AMG. Power comes from a 4.6-liter V8 and eight-speed automatic transmission. BASE PRICE: $72,885 OUR OPINION: In a word, the Lexus LS is cushy. And that’s fine; it’s what most buyers expect. Lexus covered every detail, and this car is better than the one it replaces. The FSport adds a dash of pepper to the recipe.
LINCOLN MKZ
Unlike the seemingly replicated Fords of the past, this Lincoln offers a range of unique styling and technology, punctuated by a 15.2-square-foot retractable glass roof. You won’t find that on this year’s Fusion. The sculpted hood and fenders look dramatically different from previous Lincolns and Fords, and the back has wide taillights that cut across the car’s profile. The design is showcased with a split-wing grille, a raked roofline and LED headlights. The roof is the most striking feature, with a glass panel letting in a vast expanse of light. There’s also a push-

button transmission shifter, LCD instruments and wood trim throughout the cabin. The base car gets a 2.0liter I4 rated at 240 hp (with premium fuel) and 270 lb-ft of torque. The 3.7-liter V6 makes 300 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque with an all-wheel-drive configuration. These units work with six-speed automatic gearboxes. There’s also a drive-control system that adjusts the powertrain and chassis to the driver’s taste and offers sport, normal and comfort settings. A hybrid runs the 2.0-liter I4 and a front-wheel-drive setup. The combined output of the engine and the electric motor is 188 hp. It uses a continuously variable transmission. BASE PRICE: $36,800 OUR OPINION: Swoopy aero styling and a unique, luxurious new interior mark the redesigned 2013 Lincoln MKZ. It’s a good thing, too— Lincoln is banking on the MKZ to re-establish the brand among entry luxury customers. If nothing else, the retractable glass roof is sure to interest some new buyers.

LEXUS ES Lexus designers have tried to give the ES sedan more emotion with a redesign for 2013. You’ll notice the adoption of the family “spindle grille” design. The new Lexus ES is refined in nearly every single aspect. The instrument panel includes wood inserts. The biggest change is the addition of a hybrid version to the ES family, using the fourcylinder powertrain shared with the Toyota Camry. It HIGHLIGHTS:
racks up 39 mpg combined— impressive for a car loaded with luxury touches. Rear passengers get an additional four inches of legroom. BASE PRICE: $36,995 OUR OPINION: Car enthusiasts will take a look and then keep on walking. But the Lexus ES sedan is a fine step up from cars such as the Toyota Avalon. And the hybrid version’s refinement is impressive, so it may woo shoppers who aren’t impressed by a Prius.

The base SL550 rolls with a twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 that cranks out 429 hp and 516 lbft of torque. Or you can step up to the 530 hp of the SL63 AMG or the 621 hp of the SL65 AMG. The option list includes the cool Magic Sky Control roof panel, which darkens or lightens at the press of a button. BASE PRICE: $106,405 OUR OPINION: The SL remains a stylish status symbol and is one of Mercedes-Benz’s alltime halo cars. It’s hard to beat the combination of a smooth, powerful V8 driving the rear wheels as the wind gently plays with your hair and the leather-lined cockpit coddles you. The new SL also gets a long list of safety and technology features.
NISSAN SENTRA
A redesign moves the Sentra (see page 28) away from the tall, sharp-edged look of the current car—which
didn’t set any sales records—to a more contemporary, rounded design that closely resembles the new Altima. But the Sentra continues to ride on Nissan’s older B-car platform. The only engine for now is a new 1.8-liter four-cylinder rated at 130 hp. Nissan says it will get up to 40 mpg on the highway. You can get a sixspeed manual but only on the base S-trim level. All other Sentras get a continuously variable transmission. BASE PRICE: $16,770 OUR OPINION: The new Sentra is definitely easier on the eyes. And the redesigned interior has an upscale vibe about it— which adds some pop to the base price. But we fear that 130 hp may just barely be adequate for our tastes. Here’s hoping there’s a new SE-R sitting in the pipeline.

A new generation of the CVT has a wider gear ratio range and less friction for better fuel economy. There is no manual-transmission option. Buyers can still choose between the four-cylinder and V6 engines. The thoroughly reworked interior uses betterlooking materials and offers more room for rear-seat passengers. BASE PRICE: $22,280 OUR OPINION: There’s a dogfight going on in the midsize-sedan segment, with new offerings from Toyota, Honda, Ford and the coming 2014 Mazda 6. But the Altima’s quiet ride,
comfortable cabin and fuelsipping powertrains make it a strong contender.
SUBARU BRZ
Fans of affordable, rear-drive sports coupes are riding high with the Subaru BRZ, the mechanical twin of the Scion FR-S. You get a 2.0liter flat-four pumping out 200 hp. You can choose between a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The rear seats are best for kids, not adults. HIGHLIGHTS: Toyota’s large sedan gets a makeover for the 2013 model. FUEL-EFFICIENT
TRUCKS
NO LONGER AN OXYMORON Improved technologies are making trucks more efficient with each model year BY SHERRICE GILSBACH
26
2013
W
E’RE STILL IN AN ERA where fuel economy for pickup trucks is considered acceptable if it ekes into double-digit territory. Nobody really thinks twice about a truck averaging 15 mpg on the highway. But this is all changing, quickly, as trucks join the race to meet more aggressive federal fueleconomy requirements. Smaller and more diverse powertrains, lighter-weight frames and bodies, and the application of technology are all part of the mix as automakers work toward the new CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standard of 54.5 mpg that cars and light trucks will need to achieve by 2025. Today, those numbers seem close to impossible for trucks to meet. So, what will be the magic dust that gets all the pickups ready to toe the fuel-economy line? The answer lies in not just one but many improvements, and we’re starting to see the changes already. We recently tested a 2013 Ram 1500 4x4 (see page 22) with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine capable of 16 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway (the 4x2 gets 18/25 mpg). To achieve these numbers, the Ram is nearly 130 pounds lighter, incorporates an eight-speed transmission (up from the four- and six-speed options), and, among other things, is improved aerodynamically. Another significant change we’ve noticed is the introduction of turbocharged engines: Ford with the EcoBoost V6 in the 2012 F-150 that gets 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, and the Hyundai Santa Fe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder (see page 28) capable of 31 mpg on the highway. Diesel engines are also growing as a fuel-
economy solution, with the 2013 Cayenne (see page 24) debuting as the first-ever diesel Porsche to hit the United States. The Cayenne’s diesel V6 boasts 240 hp, 406 lb-ft of torque and 28 mpg on the highway. And, next spring, Chrysler Group will give the Jeep Grand Cherokee an early start to the 2014 model year with the addition of a diesel V6. Hybrids are another strategy (see Ford CMax hybrid, page 26). General Motors brought back the hybrid full-size Chevy Silverado pickup, getting 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, for the 2013 model year. The non-hybrid V8 Silverado for 2013 is still remarkably efficient, its 2WD option delivering 21 mpg on the highway. This truck used improved aerodynamics, a sixspeed automatic transmission, cylinder deactivation and aluminum control arms for the front suspension to reach its 2013 fueleconomy numbers. The Silverado and its cousin, the GMC Sierra, will be redesigned for the 2014 model year, their debut expected in early 2013. Look for a big push to cut weight, to add fuel-saving transmissions and to introduce a new, more efficient generation of GM’s small-block V8. And what about the future? Weight is the enemy of fuel economy, yet trucks need to tackle big jobs. Automakers will shed pounds wherever they can. Ford has reportedly been looking at a dramatic increase in aluminum for its nextgeneration pickups. And don’t be surprised to see smaller trucks—along with high-output four-cylinder engines or small diesels—for the personal-use customer.

ACURA RDX HIGHLIGHTS: Acura
overhauled the RDX for the 2013 model year, making it bigger, more comfortable and more powerful than its predecessor. The biggest change: The turbocharged four-banger has been replaced by a 3.5-liter V6 that cranks out 273 hp— 33 hp more than the old engine—and uses cylinderdeactivation technology. The V6 is mated to a six-speed
automatic transmission. The first five gears are designed with power in mind, while sixth-gear overdrive is for fuel economy. Acura added one inch to the RDX’s wheelbase, and back-seat passengers’ legs get the benefit. The RDX shares a few bits with the Honda CR-V, such as the electric power steering and lower A-arms in the front suspension, but this is no dressed-up clone. Acura
poured on the luxury touches, including heated seats, push-button start, highoutput stereo and moonroof, all standard. Buyers can choose between front- and all-wheel drive. BASE PRICE: $35,215 OUR OPINION: Acura’s small crossover takes a big step up the luxury ladder with a smooth V6 and lots of leather. But the base price gets hiked, too.
AUDI ALLROAD
Audi is still a year away from having a small crossover for its U.S. customers (the Q3, due in late 2013). To fill that gap, it adds the Allroad wagon to the lineup. The Allroad takes the place of the A4 Avant wagon. The Allroad gives you 7.1 inches of ground clearance, quattro all-wheel drive and some plastic cladding around the wheel arches for a rugged look. The only powertrain offered is a turbocharged fourcylinder engine rated at 211 hp, mated to an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Inside, the seats are covered in cloth and the dash comes straight from the A4 sedan. BASE PRICE: $40,495 OUR OPINION: Audi takes aim at the Subaru Outback and Volvo XC70 crowd. The Allroad is a fine compromise between car and SUV. But with the Q3 coming soon, it may not be here for long. HIGHLIGHTS:

For the U.S. market only, buyers can step up to a turbocharged, 300-hp inline six mated to a six-speed automatic, but fuel economy drops to 21 mpg combined. Sorry, no diesel option for U.S. buyers—at least not yet. Like BMW’s other crossovers, the X1 has sporty driving dynamics. Front passengers will be plenty comfortable, but
use of the small-sedan platform means legroom is really tight for those in the back seat. BASE PRICE: $31,545 OUR OPINION: This is the most nimble of BMW’s crossovers, due in part to its smaller size. To really up the fun factor, add the M Sport package. But options boost the X1’s sticker price in big jumps.

The Encore uses the same platform as the diminutive Chevrolet Sonic— at 168.5 inches long, the Encore is about 10 inches shorter than a Ford Escape. But there will be plenty of room for front- and back-seat passengers, and lots of leather trim. The Encore also uses the Sonic’s turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, cranking out 140 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, running through a sixspeed automatic transmission. 2013, the Ford Escape has ditched its boxy looks for a stylish aerodynamic design, its old Mazda-based platform for one shared with the Ford Focus, and the V6 engine for a trio of four-bangers, two of which use EcoBoost directinjection and turbocharging technology. The result is an eye-pleasing crossover that rides better, gets better fuel economy and can still tow up to 3,500 pounds. The base engine is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four rated at 168 hp. BASE PRICE: $23,295 OUR OPINION: The new Escape is a big improvement over the old model and sets up a real clash with redesigned versions of the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. INFINITI JX35
Realizing that its sports car-based FX crossover was a bit tight for families and the QX is just too big for some, Infiniti takes aim at buyers drawn to the Acura MDX and Lexus RX with the JX35 crossover. The JX seats seven in three rows, with plenty of luxury touches and technology—video monitors for second-row passengers, backup sensors that can automatically apply the brakes if they detect an object and an eco-driving mode that can push back on the gas pedal to encourage fuel economy. The JX uses the same chassis that underpins the Nissan Altima and Murano. LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER HIGHLIGHTS: At first glance, the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover looks as it always has for the past 10 years. But this Range Rover is all new, with some styling touches adopted from the successful Range Rover Evoque. The biggest change is that the Range Rover has ditched the all-steel unibody for one made from aluminum—helping cut 700 pounds. The suspension is also reworked with aluminum front and rear subframes. $41,600 The JX35 gets all the touches Infiniti is known for—high-quality leather and wood, comfy seats and stylish design—making it a primo family hauler. redesigned 2013 Nissan Pathfinder moves to a unibody platform also used by the Infiniti JX, while the 2012 Pathfinder used a body-on-frame platform from the Frontier pickup. The move enables the Pathfinder to retain three rows of seating while improving ride comfort and fuel economy. Under the hood is Nissan’s venerable 3.5-liter V6 engine pumping out 260 hp. It’s mated to the
latest generation of Nissan’s continuously variable transmission with software that gives the Pathfinder a 5,000-pound towing rating. Nissan says the new Pathfinder should get 22 mpg combined with frontwheel drive and 21 mpg combined with all-wheel drive. The change from the truck platform helped cut 500 pounds from curb weight. The small Mercedes-Benz SUV gets some slight styling changes for 2013, but the big changes are under the hood. The 3.5-liter V6 is the same displacement as the 2012 model, but it’s a different engine. It now sports direct injection, stop/start technology and different block architecture—plus an additional 34 hp to 302 hp. It’s mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Early next year, Mercedes will add a turbocharged four-cylinder

BASE PRICE: $37,995 OUR OPINION: The power upgrade here is significant and makes this SUV much more fun to drive. But we’re waiting for the Bluetec diesel for the best combo of power and driving range.
MERCEDES-BENZ GL
About one of every four large luxury SUVs sold is a Mercedes-Benz GL, and Mercedes wants to keep it that way. To make that happen, the GL gets a broad lineup of powertrains, ranging

from a diesel V6 to the high-performance AMG model with a bi-turbo V8 that cranks out 550 hp. All GLs are fitted with all-wheel drive. The newgeneration GL is slightly longer and taller than the previous model, and comes with a new electric-assisted powersteering system. There’s also a crosswind-stabilization system that can steady the SUV. A parking-assist system can steer the GL into a parking space. The NV200 goes on sale in early 2013, equipped with a 2.0-liter fourcylinder engine and continuously variable transmission. The NV200 is a global van for Nissan, but the U.S. version gets stretched nearly eight inches. It can haul up to 1,500 pounds of stuff. BASE PRICE: $29,000 (est) OUR OPINION: A good option if you’re elected to bring all the stuff to the tailgate party.

making over their compact crossovers—one of the hottest parts of the truck business. With the redesigned Honda CR-V and Ford Escape already on the road, Toyota is ready with a revamped RAV4. The new RAV4 gets a debut at the Los Angeles auto show in November and hits the streets in early 2013. Spy shots have shown the new RAV4 to be about the same size as the current model. But the V6 is likely to be dropped, leaving just the four-cylinder. Expect the new RAV4 to lose weight and gain technology to boost fuel economy. The interior is nearly stock Impreza, and the vehicle rides like an Impreza, too. BASE PRICE: $22,790 OUR OPINION: For Subaru diehards, this is a no-brainer. It undercuts rivals such as the Kia Sportage on price but can’t match them in power.
