Chap. 1 Introduction to Control Systems

1 -1

․Introduction: ~ Control system engineers are concerned with understanding and controlling segments of their environments, often called systems, to provide useful economic products for society.

~ Control is the processing of conforming a variable (variables ) to its (their ) desired value (s)

~ A control system is an interconnection of components forming a system configuration that will provide a desired system response.

Chap. 1 Introduction to Control Systems

1 -1

․Introduction: ~ open-loop control system v.s closed-loop feedback control system 1. An open-loop control system utilizes an actuating device to control the process directly without using feedback.

Chap. 1 Introduction to Control Systems

1 -1

․Introduction: ~ open-loop control system v.s closed-loop feedback control system

2. A closed-loop control system uses a measurement of the output and feedback of the signal to compare it with the desired output (reference or command). The measure of the output is called the feedback signal.

Classifications of Closed-loop Control Systems ~Single Input Single out (SISO) control system

~Multivariable input and multivariable output (MIMO) control system

․ Brief History of Automatic Control ~The first automatic feedback controller used in an industrial process
