B.A. SOCIOLOGY HONOURS PROGRAM Students must apply for the Sociology Honours program, and they must find a Sociology faculty member who has both expertise in the area of research of the Sociology Honours thesis and who is willing to serve as their Honours supervisor. Outstanding students registered in the third year of the Sociology major program may apply for admission to the Honours program for their fourth year. A standing of 75% or better in SOCI 100, a minimum overall average of 68% or better in all 200-level courses, an average of 80% or better in all 300- and 400-level Sociology courses and an overall average of 75% or better in all 300- and 400-level courses are required for admission to the Honours program. In preparation for the fourth year of study in the Honours program, students are encouraged to arrange for an Honours thesis supervisor by the end of third year or during the summer preceding the fourth year. The formal application process normally occurs at the beginning of fourth year. Interested students should consult the Sociology Honours Advisor. Once the Sociology Honours application is approved and the Honours Thesis Supervisor form is signed, the student is then registered into the Sociology Honours program and into Sociology 449 (Honours Tutorial – 6 credits). The final deadline for registration into SOCI 449 is September 1. REQUIREMENTS: 

At least 60, but no more than 72, credits in Sociology



At least 48 of these Sociology credits must be in courses numbered 300 or above



Sociology 100 (6 credits: Introduction to Sociology)



3 credits from Sociology courses at the 200 level & SOCI 217 (3 credits: Research Methods)



SOCI 310 (3 credits: Canadian Society)



SOCI 328 (3 credits: Social Statistics I)



6 credits from SOCI 350, 400, 414, 415 (Sociological Theory)



3 credits from SOCI 380, 381, 382, 383 (Sociological Research Methods)



SOCI 449 (6 credits: Honours Tutorial)



A minimum of 24 additional 300- and 400-level Sociology credits, of which at least six credits must be at the 400-level (in addition to SOCI 449); and



At least six additional 300- and 400-level credits from another discipline (BA degree requirement)

Guidelines for Sociology 449 (Honours Thesis – 6 Credits) Students enrolled in the Sociology Honours program must complete a Sociology Honours Thesis. Although its length will vary with topic and research mode, normally this essay will be between 50 and 80 pages. It is expected to contain a measure of originality and to make a contribution to the field. The essay should be a focused piece of scholarship while at the same time demonstrating general knowledge of a sociological area. The final proposal for this essay must be submitted to your Honours supervisor by September 1 of the academic year in which Sociology 449 is being taken, as this is the deadline for Honours registration. The proposal should include a 2-3 page statement of the essay’s topic and objectives, a working bibliography, and a timetable. Prospective students are encouraged to begin discussion of this project with their supervisor several months ahead of this deadline. Students will meet on a regular basis with their supervisor to discuss progress on their essay. It is recommended that students submit sections or chapters of their essay for feedback from their supervisor as the course progresses. The deadline for submission of the final thesis to your Honours Thesis Supervisor is March 30. The essay will be read and graded by your supervisor. It may also be read by a second faculty member with expertise in the general area of the essay topic. This professor may be consulted regarding the essay’s final grade. Additional information is available on the Sociology website: http://www.soci.ubc.ca/index.php?id=13510 Time Line Find a Full-time Faculty Member to be your Honours Thesis Supervisor in the winter or summer before your final year of study. Apply for Honours in the spring or summer before your final year by filling out the application form and confirming your eligibility with the Sociology Undergraduate Advisor (ANSO 2108) for approval. If your application is approved the Undergraduate Advisor will contact you and send you the Honours Thesis Supervisor Form to you via email. Submit this form along with your Honours Proposal to your Honours Thesis Supervisor, who must approve your proposal no later than the departmental deadline of September 1. Once your Honours Application is approved, you will be registered into SOCI 449 - Honours Thesis (6 credits) by the Undergraduate Advisor. Please make sure that you leave credit space to be registered in SOCI 449. Your Honours Thesis Supervisor and you will determine the final due date for the thesis. The departmental deadline for submitting your final thesis to your Honours Thesis Supervisor is March 30. Once your thesis is marked, your final grade/percentage will be reported by your Honours Thesis Supervisor to the Undergraduate Advisor and entered onto the SSC.
