Backup in Azure with Commvault VIRTUAL MACHINES/FILES & OPERATING SYSTEMS/APPLICATIONS & DATABASES Most cloud users don’t realize until it’s too late that the cloud tools for replication don’t provide the level of protection that they need for workloads and applications running in the cloud. The moment they find a long-running bug, data corruption, or something similar is when they realize that their replication solution can’t help them recover their data. Commvault offers multiple options to protect workloads, applications (SQL, SharePoint and Exchange) and data running in Microsoft Azure Virtual Machines, such as agentless backup & recovery, application-integrated granular protection, automated self-discovery and protection, efficient replication, and much more. Once protected you’ll have a basis that can be used for DR, either test or real. Commvault is also one of the only data management solutions that provides a full array of infrastructure choices, enabling deployments that span physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructure. This enables customers to use a single data management solution, regardless of where their workloads live – or where they move in the future! SCENARIO / SUITABILITY
REQUIREMENTS
Data Protection for Cloud-based Workload – protecting active workloads within an existing IaaS Cloud (Production, Dev/Test)
Virtual Server Agent and Media Agent deployed on a proxy within IaaS provider for agentless backup. Applications will require agent-in-guest deployed in each VM
Agentless Instance Protection – protect instances with an agent-less and automated/script-less protection mechanism through the Virtual Server Agent
(Applications requiring application-level consistency, and all other cloud providers) Agents deployed in each VM within IaaS provider
Auto Detection and Protection – Automatically detect and protect new instances, volumes attached to a VM or databases created in SQL for inclusion in the next Data Protection window
Minimum 1x Media Agent in Cloud, and (optional) minimum 1x Media Agent at secondary site (whether cloud or on-premises)
DASH Copy to Another Region, Cloud, or Back to Onpremises – complete data mobility – replicate to another geographical region with IaaS provider, a different IaaS provider, or back to on-premises sites
1x DDB hosted on Media Agent recommended to use dedicated network from cloud provider to on-premises for best performance when replicating back to onpremises (Azure Express Route)
From day-to-day backup and recovery to long-term archiving and disaster recovery, Commvault makes it easier to move your data and workloads to and from the Microsoft Azure cloud.
BACKUP IN AZURE
1 De-duplicated backup into Azure storage using agent-less VSA for Azure, or application/file block-level backups (agent-in-guest). Short term recovery points retained in same region for fast, local-based restores.
2 De-duplicated assisted copy to DR region via MediaAgent, providing an independent, discrete copy of recovery points, protecting against loss of single region and replication corruption. Only unique changed blocks are sent, minimizing any egress costs.
3 Restore of Azure VMs, application data or granular files can target any region, using either Azure storage account.
4 DR CommServe at DR region can be activated in event of failure at Production region. A single, active CommServe can administer all components, irrespective of number of regions or Azure accounts actively being protected.
Disaster Recovery to Azure with Commvault With technology that is deeply integrated into Azure services, Commvault has allowed organizations to refine the process of recovering their systems.
