Balancing Distribution Capacity through Network Optimization and Automated Model Building Challenge A major apparel company uses LLamasoft® Supply Chain Guru® to optimize its regional and global supply chains but was still using a spreadsheet-based model for visibility into E-commerce seasonal impact on short-term distribution centers (DCs) capacity. Analysts quickly realized they needed a faster and more effective way to manage capacity in their DCs to meet digital demand for the upcoming holiday season. To address this challenge the company added the LLamasoft® Data Guru® visual data blending tool to quickly build and analyze capacity models in order to make lasting impacts.
Solution The company worked together with LLamasoft to develop a project within Data Guru in order to streamline the creation of a Supply Chain Guru model. By building the models in Data Guru, they were able to reduce the total time to answer. This significantly simplified the modeling process and allows analysts to quickly understand DC throughput and balance network utilization. Data Guru was also used to customize the model output to fit their current reporting needs.

Results Once the user defines the input and starts the workflow, the model is now created in about 30 seconds! This allows the retailer to run the optimization and evaluate different sourcing splits among its five distribution centers. They can adjust DC throughput in significantly less time by producing a daily processing and shipping forecast for the DCs that can be changed rapidly for what-if analysis and use the data for ongoing modeling purposes. The previous spreadsheet-based model required analysts to spend a significant amount of time making sure the formulas populated correctly. Data Guru’s automated model building made the workflow 70 percent faster. This gave them better visibility into model results with an increased detail of reporting and allowed them to better leverage Supply Chain Guru to answer more questions in a shorter time frame. Using Data Guru, the output workflow also exports results to their existing reporting tool, streamlining the overall process and leveraging existing work.
