TIBIDABO AMUSEMENT PARK MANAGER
T
ibidaboisacentury-oldamusement park and one of the oldest in the world. How has it managed to survive in an age of so many innovations? >> The hallmark of Tibidabo is innovation. Its first attractions were already designed to bring the innovations of the day to the city’s inhabitants. It has constantly evolved, always respecting the past and advancing together with society and its changes. Furthermore, its intrinsic magic, setting and values have helped it not only to survive but also to remain in the collective memory as a place of happiness and emotions. What are the latest additions to the Park and what are its main perspectives for the future? >> I’ts constant evolution goes hand in hand with new technologies and

this is the Park’s clear and firm commitment. One example of this is Virtual Express, Catalonia’s first virtual reality attraction. But new technologies cannot only be found in its range of attractions, but also in the Park’s educational aspect, one of its strategic pillars, with didactic scientific and technological activities through its attractions or educational robotic activities, another new addition. There is actually more than one Tibidabo, so which of these is attracting the most public today? >> Tibidabo is a unique space because of its location, history and magic. It is the oldest amusement park in Spain, the second largest in Europe and one of the oldest in the world. A centuryold site that allows visitors to enjoy the best views of Barcelona from its highest point at 500m above sea level on
Collserola, the green metropolitan lung of the city. Its uniqueness and offer attract all types of public, with more than thirty attractions designed for all ages. The Automata Museum, with more than 40 mechanical pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries, has recently opened. What did recovering this space mean? >> Inaugurated in 1982, the Automata Museum is today the most important museum of its kind in the world. Recovering this space has meant a lot to Tibidabo. These pieces had been undervalued for years and they can now survive because ofthe power ofnew technologies. Barcelona’s residents and visitors have together enjoyed the Park. Is this still true?Whatkindofpublicdoesitattract? >> It is a park for each and every person. One of its highlights is the “panoramic area”, known as the “Sky Walk”, which differsfromtheAmusementParkproper in terms of its schedule (opening every day of the week) and because entry to it is free. The panoramic area contains the Park’s most emblematic, historical attractions and offers visitors to the city a uniqueplacetostrollbecauseofitsoutstandingviews, historyandplacestoeat. Why is Tibidabo known as the “park of happiness”? >> Its mission is to make everyone interacting with us feel happy: customers, workers or suppliers. our clients and the team of professionals working at the Park. To what extent does the Park’s location affect its success and access to it? >> Its location on the Collserola mountain range is a privilege for the Park. A commitment to the environment is one ofourstrategicpillarsandforthisreason we promote the use of public transport and especially the funicular railway. Interesting spaces
If you want a true gift for the imagination, you can also visit some interesting buildings with your family. Children will become researchers on La Pedrera’s dynamic tours: finding stone dragons and mosaic forests at Park Güell, meeting Gaudí during a dramatized tour at Casa Batlló and dressing up as the Güell family and its staff at Palau Güell. They will learn even more about Gaudí at Casa Vicens and will seehowpeoplelivedinthe19thcentury at Colònia Güell (just outside the city). Casa Amatller, designed by Puig i Cadafalch, offers dramatized tours, guided tours with a cup of chocolate and workshops on ‘trencadís’, stained glass and sgraffito.
And yet another Modernista gem, Casa de les Punxes is an original building in Avinguda Diagonal whose design is based on a medieval castle and where you will discover the legend of SaintGeorge.Youcanalsocanenjoyguided tours of Liceu, Palau de la Música and the rooftop spaces of Santa Maria del Mar.
Family activities
Kids & Family Walking Tour is a magical tour enlivened by songs, dances, legends and stories through the historic heart of the city, including a sample of traditional sweets. Parks and gardens
Barcelona’s mild climate is perfect for outdoor living. Beaches, parks, squares, mountains... a host of places for sustainable family fun. At the northern end of the city, the Collserola mountain range is dominated bythe mountain of Tibidabo, whose peak is mainly taken up by a century-old amusement park. Although Tibidabo is the star of the range, this extensive green area also offers magnificent vantage points, picnic areas, routes to complete on foot, by bike, jogging or on horseback(tickets.visitbarcelona.com), birdwatching, springs, environmental education... Right beside the sea, the hill of Montjuïc also has several vantage points and green areas. Its Botanical Garden occupies 14 hectares with Mediterranean plants. More parks that should be on your best of list include Parc de la Ciutade13

If you want to complete your Gaudí day, head to Parc de la Creueta del Coll, which is located very near Park Güell. Sea and beaches
You cannot mention Barcelona without mentioning the Mediterranean. The city has accessible beaches with free Wi-Fi, facilities and services that invite you to enjoy the coastline throughout the year. If you like to surf, practice water sports or simply relax, head down to the seafront. And while there, check out the fun that can had in March. Although it is not yet swimming season, the Barcelona coastline is still a fun place to be with its 28 blue flag beaches. You can find gifts for children at El Corte Ingles and Diagonal Mar shopping centre and the magic of the Disney Store at L’Illa Diagonal. But if you want to take home some surprising original gifts, make sure you head to any Laie shop that can be found in many museums, such as CCCB, CosmoCaixa, Museu Picasso, CaixaForum and MACBA. FC Barcelona Official Stores have several locations in the city and are a paradise for Barcelona fans. There are three shops specialising in children’s books: Casa Anita (Vic, 14), Abracadabra (Gral. Álvarez de Castro, 5) and La Caixa d’Eines (Aragò, 367). TRADITIONS
SANT MEDIR AND ‘MONA DE PASCUA’ Family traditions take centre stage in March and the city celebrates its sweetest tradition, Sant Medir, on March 3. People gather during the day at his chapel on the nearby Collserola mountain range and then head to the parade through the Gràcia neighbourhood, during which tons of lollies will be thrown into the crowds. Easter Week ends the month with processions and theatrical religious performances. The celebration ends in Catalonia on Easter Monday (April 2) with a traditional dessert: the ‘mona de Pascua’ (pictured), a cake that was once a brioche with a chocolate filled egg, but is now a cake decorated with chocolate figurines that godparents give to their godchildren.
