School Act Section 177 Guidelines The new provincial guidelines on Section 177 of the School Act are now in place. The new guidelines are a set of best practices developed with the assistance of a number of education partners including the BCPVPA, BCSTA, BCSSA and BCCPAC. The guidelines set out the key elements that should be included in all districts’ section 177 policies such as clear procedures that should be followed when a person is excluded from school property and a process for appealing section 177 decisions. Districts will set their own hiring priorities, based on input from teachers and administration. “Our understanding of the process is that superintendents will be working with committees and their local union presidents to look at district needs – and then creating positions to meet those needs,” said Kevin Reimer, president of the B.C. any thanks to Rose MacKenzie, Brackendale Elementary Principal and Sea to Sky Chapter President for arranging my visit to her school district this week. Often, when districts talk about how to better support their Aboriginal learners the conversation turns to the successes of Sea to Sky, which ‘is honoured to be learning on the Traditional Territory of the Skwxwú7mesh, Úxwumixw, and St’át’yemc Nations ... and is committed to supporting the traditions, languages and ambitions of the local Aboriginal people.” My thanks to Pemberton Secondary VP Diane Hart (@DianeHartLearn), Signal Hill Elementary Principal Dave Dunkin (@dunkinsd48), Myrtle Phillip Elementary Principal Jeff Maynard (@MPCSprincipal) and Superintendent Lisa McCullough (@LisaMSD48) for welcoming me to their schools and district. At the invitation of Susan Nichols, Principal of Vancouver’s General Wolfe Elementary and President of the Vancouver Elementary PVPA, I attended an orientation for recently hired elementary vice-principals. It was great to meet some of our newest members and hear the stories of their challenges and successes in their first year. I was happy to share with them the work of the BCPVPA, our current successes and projects, and how we are moving forward as an Association. Following the meeting, I reflected on our discussion and thought of what I wish I had known in my first year as a vice-principal. A few of them are: • Learning to prioritize is your first priority. Not everything that lands on your desk is urgent. Understanding the difference between what is urgent and what appears to be urgent will reduce your stress load. • Teachers and parents may expect that you have all of the answers. Give yourself permission to respond with, “I don’t know the answer to that question, but I will find out for you.” • Remember to listen. The WAIT acronym (Why Am I Talking) serves as a reminder about the power of listening. Often people want you to listen rather than solve their problems for them.

• Be genuine. You were hired because of who you are. Stay true to yourself and your values.

• Don’t rush a decision. Investigate and understand a situation before you decide on the course of action.

• Remain calm. In times of crises people will value your calming presence before they will follow your leadership.

#bcpvpaadvice Take a moment & share your wisdom with our newest leaders
• Avoid matching intensities. Flustered people may expect you to share in their anxiety. I have learned this one by working alongside many amazing administrative assistants. One assistant would respond to the harried request of a staff member by stating slowly and calmly, “Disorganization on your part does not constitute panic on mine.” • Not all leadership initiatives are going to be successful. If the creation of a program or initiative is not sustainable in the absence of your leadership then it may not be worth your time and energy.
• And lastly, remember to breathe. To our experienced school leaders out there I hope that you will take a moment to share your wisdom with our newest leaders via the following hashtag #bcpvpaadvice. Have a great weekend, Kevin
