BeaverTails HonourThree Amigos Summit Serving ObamaTailwith a Mexican Twist FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 27, 2016, Ottawa, ON - To commemorate the return of U.S. PresidentBarack Obama to Ottawa on Wednesday, June 29, the BeaverTails people will bere-creating the ObamaTail that drew the President to the ByWard Market in2009…and they’ll be adding a touch of Mexican sweetness as a tribute to theMexican President Enrique Peno Nieta, who will be joining the President andPrime Minister Trudeau for the upcoming "Three Amigos" summit. "ObamaTails" were first served at the invitation of the CanadianEmbassy in Washington, for President Obama’s initial inauguration on January 20,2009. Created for the occasion by BeaverTails Canada Inc. founders, Grant and PamHooker of Ottawa, the ObamaTail was a classic cinnamon-sugar BeaverTails®pastry with a large whipped cream letter “O” traced with chocolate/hazelnutsauce. Shortly after the Hookers return from Washington, they learned thatPresident Obama would be arriving in Ottawa a few weeks later. Specifically on February 19, 2009. The Hookers, with the help ofgraphic artist, David O’Malley, assembled a six-page invitation package(see attachment below) telling the story of BeaverTails attendance at the inauguration andinviting the President to drop by for a Tail, “…if your agenda loosens up.” The invitation package also included an Ottawa Citizen photograph of “The First Lady’s First BeaverTail” taken in 1995 when the Hookers servedHillary Clinton a BeaverTail on the Rideau Canal Skateway. “Should youwish a reference regarding the ‘challenges’ of eating a BeaverTail… yourSecretary of State may be of assistance,” read the Hookers’ 2009 invitation toObama. “If you don’t ask, you don’t get,” explains Hooker. "Having beenasked to serve Mrs. Clinton during her husband’s Presidential visit to Ottawain 1995, we thought maybe Mrs. Obama would be coming on the 2009 visit and thatjust maybe she’d be interested in a Canadian treat.” The Hookers heard nothing back after delivering their invitation packageto the U.S. Embassy. Like just about everyone in Canada, they spent theday watching the new rock-star President’s motorcade travel from the Ottawaairport to Parliament Hill. And then ithappened…

After departing Parliament for the airport, the television newscastersreported that the President’s motorcade had not made the scheduled turn ontoColonel By towards the airport and was not in sight of the pre-arranged cameralocations. "Where is the President?” they asked on air. As the Hookers later found out, the motorcade had entered Ottawa'sByWard Market. The President had exited his vehicle, entered the main Marketbuilding and had announced, “I’m looking for a BeaverTail!" What happened next will be part of BeaverTails lore forever. "Twosecret service men opened the backdoor of our booth in the Market,” saidHooker, “and announced that the President would appreciate a BeaverTail." "They invited our staff to choose among themselves one person to serve thePresident. Jessica Millien was the chosen one. The staff carefullyassembled their best ObamaTail and sent Jessica, under secret service escort,to the President just outside the Market building. The ObamaTail wasexchanged, the two chatted for a short while, photos were taken…and then it wasover.” “We will be eternally grateful for the Presidential stop-over,” saysHooker. "I wasn’t in the Market when the President dropped by. Ididn’t think in a million years that he would see and respond to our invitationpackage. But he did!” "It wasn’t so much a gesture of friendship towards our company,”continues Hooker, "but by coming to the Market and grabbing a snack on thestreet, the President was connecting to those adoring Canadians who hadfollowed his rise to power and who supported what he stood for. What aprivilege to have served a role in his common touch gesture to Canadians. We’d be pretty irresponsible if we didn’t do something to honour hisfinal visit to our capital.” That is exactly what BeaverTails will be doing Wednesday when they bringObamaTails back to the ByWard Market store on Wednesday. In the interestof tripartite friendship between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, tribute will bepaid to Mexican President Enrique Peno Nieto’s participation at the summit byreplacing the chocolate/hazelnut ObamaTail component with a zesty Mexicanchocolate swirl to Wednesday's ObamaTail pastry. Concludes Mr. Hooker, "We do what we can to assist our leaders and diplomats in their attempts tomaintain harmonious global relations!” ### For corporate information please contact Mark Lowe, PRagmatic Communications, Tel: (514) 499-9632, Email: [email protected] Mobile: (514) 576-2519.
