Dry low intensity magnetic separation Belt drum separators (also called dry cobbers) have been developed for separation of coarse ferromagnetic ores with feed particle sizes up to 300 mm to produce lump ore concentrates preconcentrates and to reject coarse gangue. Application

A typical flowsheet with application of rich ore, middlings and gangue separators is shown below.

Cobbing of ores covers quite a large particle size range and in order to treat the ore most effectively, the separators are designed with different magnet configurations and pole pitches.

The rubber belt is supported by rubber idlers at the feed origin in order to absorb the material feed impact. The adjustable splitter under the magnetic drum is rubber covered for wear protection and is easily changed. The drive unit is mounted at the rear drum and is comprised of a speed reducer, V-belts, pulleys and motor. If required by process conditions or type of ore, a variable speed drive can be supplied to allow belt speed variation from 0.5 m/s up to 2.5 m/s as an option to the standard fixed speed arrangement.

Magnetic configuration

Permanent magnets of ceramic strontium-ferrite are the source of the magnetic field. Cobbing separators are available in the following two magnet configurations. The BSA-type has magnetic poles arranged in rows parallel to the drum shaft, thus forcing the magnetic material to rotate when passing over the drum causing the rejection of non-magnetic and weakly magnetic material. The BSA-type is suitable for separation of particles up to 200 mm in size.

The BSS-type (disc-type) has magnetic poles arranged in sectors with fixed polarity in the direction of the drum rotation; hence the particles do not rotate when passing over the drum. This design is used for coarser separations up to a maximum of 300 mm in particle size.

The capacity and performance of the separators are dependant upon material factors such as mineralogical composition, particle size distribution, moisture content, degree of liberation, magnetic properties of ore, and ratio of magnetics to non-magnetics. When selecting the equipment, the following design criteria must be determined: • Fixed or alternating polarity • Pole pitch • Speed of belt

The BSA and BSS models are available with drum diameters of 1200 mm and drum lengths from 600 mm to 3000 mm in 600 mm multiples.

The separation is optimized by balancing the centripetal and gravity forces against the magnetic attraction force by varying the speed of the belt. The graph below shows the influence of belt speed on selectivity when processing a typical crude ore (particle size 25 - 125 mm). The capacity figures shown in the following table may be used for calculation purposes, recognizing that the separator capacity will vary from case to case depending on already mentioned factors. It is recommended that careful laboratory and pilot plant studies are performed to establish optimal separation parameters for both selection of the correct type and size of separator.
