MODEL BETA TESTING

JENNIFER BOYD PNW LA GRANDE, OR

OVERVIEW • GIS toolbox products • What are our objectives from the beta testing process? • How can you get involved? • What is our approach and methods of training?

GIS TOOLBOXES Toolboxes Elk Nutrition Update Vegetation Elk Habitat Use

WESTSIDE BETA TESTING • Had 15 beta testers • Managers, Biologist, GIS analysts

• Involvement ranged from interest in one part on through the entire process • Spanned examples of land management that altered all management covariates used in the models

OUR OBJECTIVES • Test functionality of GIS Toolboxes • Teach users about the toolboxes • Determine availability and ease of use of input layers • Obtain constructive feedback • Create a user manual Photo: L. Naylor

HOW WE COMMUNICATE • Primarily use Video Teleconferencing (VTC) • Web meetings and conference calls • Phone calls and emails

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BETA TESTING?

POSSIBLE ROLES FOR BETA TESTER • Do you have a management area that could be altered? • DDE (CC), Roads

• Do you manage land for elk?

• Create habitat, change distributions

• Do you have GIS experience or access to a GIS analyst? • Do you want to sponsor?

PERKS TO BETA TESTING • Obtain pre-release equations to model elk nutrition and habitat use for the Blue Mountains. • Hands on GIS training • Your comments and feedback help shape the user manual and GIS toolboxes

TIME LINE • Start beta testing fall 2012 • 3-4 VTCs to learn the toolboxes

• Workshop 2 coming in spring 2013 • Present final models • Beta testers invited to share their experiences • Day of hands on GIS
