1. Purpose of Course The primary purpose of this course is to provide an intellectual grounding, through readings and discussion, in the basic theories, principles and contemporary issues of bioethics. Secondarily, this course is designed to help students develop systematic strategies and analytic frameworks for identifying and examining bioethical issues and for resolving bioethical dilemmas and problems. These goals will be met through an exploration of such bioethical topics as genetic ethics and ethical issues in biotechnology, ethical concerns raised by the involvement of animals and humans in research, ethical issues at the end-of-life, and considerations in scientific integrity. These, and other current bioethics issues, will be considered against a background of classical and contemporary readings in moral philosophy. 2. TEACHING METHODS The teaching method for this course is seminar format. That is, students are expected to prepare thoroughly for class by reading the assigned material so that rigorous and insightful discussion can occur during class. Also, students will learn from each during small group discussions. Consideration and discussion of assigned readings will be augmented by audio-visuals. Guest lecturers will present selected topics. 3. Grading Policy A) Assignments and Examinations: a) Each student will write 2, 2-page, double-spaced, typed, ethics article reviews. These papers will be case analyses of an ethical issue or problem. b) There will be a mid-term and a final exam. Each will be two hours in length. Both will be take home exams. 1

c) Because I have a reading disability, your article reviews and exams will need to be turned in on a computer disk and with one hard copy. For the article reviews, you will need to attach a copy of the article to the hard copy of your review. B) Grading Procedures a) The article reviews and exams will be graded A,B,C, or F. One grade fraction (eg an A will drop to an A minus, a B minus will drop to a C+) will be dropped, automatically, for any work turned in late without prearrangement. b) Your article reviews will be handed back with comments/edits where appropriate. If you receive a grade lower than a B, you may rewrite it in light of the comments/edits. The higher grade will stand. Each article review will account for a maximum of 15 points. c) To increase objectivity in grading, please make certain to identify your papers and exams by the last 4 digits of your student number only. Your student number is your social security number. d) Your class participation will be graded. Your participation will account for a maximum of 10 points. e) Your mid-term exam and your final will account for a maximum of 30 points, each. f) The grading scale is: 100- 98 = A+ 97- 94 = A 93 - 91 = A90 - 88 = B+ 87 - 84 = B 83 - 81 = B80 - 78 = C+ 77 - 74 = C 73 - 70 = C69 or less = F
