Welcome to the 36th Annual Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping Classic! Dear BFI Attendee, Ullman–Peterson Events is honored to carry on what we consider to be the most prestigious Open roping in the United States. What started as 40 teams back in 1977 has now grown to 100 teams of the best ropers in the world. The conditions are tough; with a long score and hard-running cattle, the best of the best always shine and fans get the opportunity to watch some of the best horses in the industry. This year will be no exception, Flying T Cattle Company (Rowley and Cathie Twisselman) is bringing a herd of fresh steers that will test everyone. We’re proud to be able to cater to the team roping industry’s elite professionals. Over $600,000 in cash and awards will cover the arena floor at the close of the 36th annual BFI. The entry fee this year is still $5,000 per team and we still only hold 3% per team for administrative and cattle costs—that’s just $150 per team. The cash payout will remain the same as it did last year: All 15 teams that make it back to the short round will receive a check. As always, there were teams that didn’t get in, which is disappointing. We sincerely wish we could take all who enter. However, the general consensus from spectators and
sponsors is that it would take away from the prestige of this roping. Not only that, but the production would last much longer, causing problems with video and Internet broadcasts and interfering with the BFI’s interaction with the Reno Rodeo. Speaking of sponsors, we’d like to welcome back and extend a huge “thank you” to the supporters who’ve been with the BFI for many years—as well as the new sponsors that have come on board. The support from these companies is what makes the BFI payoff and prize line so legendary. Thank you for your continued support, and let’s have a great roping! We look forward to meeting our newly crowned champions at the historic 36th Annual Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping Classic! Sincerely, The Team at Ullman-Peterson Events,
Corky & Kristi Ullman and Daren & Kami Peterson

My, How Times Have Changed in 1978 larry Goss and Mike Garrison (pictured) won the Bob feist invitational Team Roping Classic by roping six steers in 81.42 seconds on a 35-foot score in Chowchilla, Calif. The fast time on one steer that year was 9.23 seconds, set by Jim Peterson and John Rodriguez. Goss and Garrison’s average win is the second-slowest in the history of the event, while Peterson and Rodriguez’s single-steer mark is the slowest in that category.

in 2006 Keven Daniel won the PRCA/Resistol Heading Rookie of the Year award. The next year, he qualified for his first Wrangler national finals Rodeo with Jhett Johnson. in 2008, he roped with Cory Petska and Ryan Motes and finished in the crying hole: 16th. However, among other wins, he and Petska had one bright spot at the Bob feist invitational Team Roping Classic. “i’d never won anything at the Bfi,” Daniel said. “Cory Petska and i went out in the first round and hadn’t done good all day. There were two steers there that they won dang near every round on that year and we finally got
one of them. We were 4.74, won the fifth round and dang near had the fast time.” Coleman Proctor and Jake long, incidentally, had the fast time that year with a 4.46. Daniel and Petska’s 4.74 is the second-fastest time ever clocked at the Bfi, but doesn’t see the record books because of Proctor and long’s run. “i like the look of it,” Daniel said of the buckle. “it’s pretty cool—it’s not the average buckle and i hope to get one of those someday—but it’s good to win something at the Bfi.”

Tanner Bryson, a roper-turned artist, creates the annual BFI poster Of all the second careers professional ropers enjoy, artwork is one of the least likely. But that’s exactly the career Tanner Bryson—who, during his professional rodeo career won Reno, Austin and held the fasttime record at the Pendleton Round-Up for 10 years—has pursued. In fact, Bryson rodeoed ChrIsta BrunorI Photo with the men whose images he rendered to emblazon the cover of this program and on posters around Reno to represent the 36th Annual Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping Classic. “The roping has been around for over 30 years, so it’s historic,” said Bryson, who has both headed and heeled at the BFI over the
Corre Cted dates !* years. “So that mystique—with all three of the guys coming to every roping—was a nice tribute.” Since the first BFI in Chowchilla, Calif., in 1977, Allen Bach, Denny Watkins and Mike Beers have paid their fees for a chance at winning the biggest one-day roping. “I know these guys and roped with them all and even rodeoed with Denny Watkins for a season,” Bryson said. “I just thought it was a tribute to those three guys who are all past champions of the rodeo.” Bryson’s natural artistic abilities were nurtured from an early age by his grandmother, then later by a high school teacher, and he eventually got his degree in graphic design and illustration from the University of Arizona. “When I got out of college, I didn’t pursue my art right away,” Bryson said. “I went off roping at the rodeos, and then got into my horse business. It’s just been in the last two or three years that I’ve gotten back into the art.” Now, with three children and a horse training and trail riding business to nurture, he doesn’t travel to rope anymore, but stays connected to the rodeo world and his old friends through his art. “I wanted it to look authentic,” he said of the image. “To me, the richest medium you can use is oil. I wanted to do something different. I chose an antique, Western-type font. I wanted the background to be almost like it was on fire: to really catch your eye. I wanted it to be something that you would hang on the wall for a western theme. I didn’t want it to look corporate or too modern. I wanted it to look antique.” The original, and two artist’s prints, will be auctioned at the BFI Cowboy Auction and Dinner the night before the roping. Bach, Beers and Watkins will personally autograph the painting and meet the winning bidder. Of course, posters will be for sale around the roping as well. For more on Bryson’s art, visit tannerbrysonart.com.

RENO We caught up with some Reno Rodeo and BFI regulars to find out what the cowboys do while they’re in town for just a few short days in June. DAy ONE - saturday, June 22
from indoors to outdoors, the reno/lake tahoe area provides diversions to suit any tastes and during BfI, activities for the roper skyrockets.
KIrt steInKe Photo
Get into town Saturday, June 22, just in time for the Double Dollar Horse Sale Preview. The next day, horses sell and you can find a top prospect or a ProRodeo-caliber mount. Check into your room at the Silver Legacy Hotel and Casino, then head up to the mountains for a day at North Lake Tahoe. “We always play golf then hang out at Lake Tahoe and camp,” says World Champion Nick Sartain, who has the second-fastest time on one steer in the history of the BFI. At Lake Tahoe, you’ll find golf, biking, hiking, water sports, beaches and fishing opportunities. You’re only limited by time. After a late lunch at Jason’s Landing and Beachside Grille in King’s Beach, hop in the car and head back to Reno through Carson City. “Drive down through Washoe Valley and Carson Valley for beautiful old pristine ranching valleys,” rodeo announcer Bob Tallman says. “But be careful: if the speed limit is 55 and you’re going 56, you’re getting a ticket.” Do a little downtown sightseeing, and then head over to the rodeo grounds for the carnival and wiener dog races. The Reno Rodeo began in 1919 and in 1997 won the PRCA’s award for Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year. “Reno Rodeo is one of the most progressive rodeos on the planet. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger,” Tallman says. “If you buy a ticket, you’re going to watch a very impressive grand entry, there are 52 girls that ride in every performance, then you’ll see a great rodeo, every world champion will be there at one point or another.” Grab some carnival food before heading to the arena. After the performance, head over to the Silver Legacy Hotel and Casino for a chance to rub shoulders with the cowboys, pull the one-armed bandit or roll some dice if that’s your game. Of course, be sure to check local listings for headliner acts in and around town that might catch your fancy. Country music star Scotty McCreery will perform at 8 p.m. in the Silver Legacy’s Grande Exposition Hall, so catch the tail end of the concert after the rodeo performance.

DAy TWO - sunday, June 23
The next morning, grab some grub at Peg’s Glorified Ham n Eggs. Then make your way to the rodeo grounds for the Kid’s Dummy Roping, a big hit with ProRodeo cowboys and their fans alike. You’ll catch Derrick Begay there signing autographs, and the competition is free for the kids. Winners receive trophy saddles sponsored by the BFI and Heel-O-Matic Training Systems. Then stick around town and take the kids to ride go-karts or play puttputt golf. “I’ve got two kids, and our little girl is 4. We played a lot of putt-putt before the BFI last year,” says Jake Long, who holds the record for the fastest run in BFI history with header Coleman Proctor. “And we always go to the BFI Cowboy Auction and
Dinner at the Silver Legacy. It’s got a great atmosphere with all of the ropers there and it’s fun to watch, too.” The doors for the free event in the Silver Legacy’s ballroom open at 5 p.m. with the auction starting at 6. Then, don’t miss the rodeo that night, and catch the Businessman Steer Decorating. Teams of two find a business to sponsor them, then one person holds the steer with a rope and the other ties a ribbon around the steer’s tail. It can get a bit wild! “Obviously, my favorite thing is the prestige of the whole week in Reno,” says Patrick Smith, who won the BFI in 2005 with Clay Tryan. “With the BFI and the Reno Rodeo, it’s just an awesome week to team rope for a living.”

DAy THREE Monday, June 24 It’s BFI day in Reno. You’ve got a long day of great roping ahead of you, so you’ll need food. Hit Café Central in the Silvery Legacy to enjoy a chili-cheese omelet bright and early. The restaurant is open 24 hours a day, which is key because you’ll want to get to the Reno Livestock Center Arena around 7 a.m. to get your seats. The Grand Entry starts at 7:45, so you can see all the ropers before the event gets underway. Speed Williams and Rich Skelton, among many other accolades, are the only team to win the Bob feist invitational three times. Two other headers, Charles Pogue and Clay Tryan, have won it three times, but no other heeler has won it more than twice. Williams and Skelton’s first win, in 1998, came after their first world title. The second win, in 2001 came on Rich Skelton’s 35th birthday. The last, however, came with Williams fighting through some serious food poisoning. The two men each took time to reflect on their successes at the world’s richest one-day roping.

a lot of people from back east never rope in the long boxes and long scores and never learn to use the horse or have the horsepower to compete there. everything you have to have to win back east doesn’t necessarily translate out west. It is a whole other world, and that’s why the guys from out west struggle in the short scores, because they never have to be three and, in the east, you have to be three all the time. for me, I always headed for my dad at the house. he rode colts and you weren’t supposed to miss. you learned to run close, catch and turn cows for him, because if you didn’t, you got sent over to push cows. It taught me how to catch. the BfI is about using your horse and having a horse that can run, cow and score. that’s where the guys from back east struggled, because that’s not how they win everyday back then.

Back then, the steers were big. If I recall right, that year they were all big and pretty much they were all black and they sure did run. I think we were 12 on the first one that year. we came back and drew some good ones and made some good runs, but the steers were a handful back then. It’s the same roping as it’s always been, but basically you have to have a head horse out there that can really run and [speed williams’ horse] Bob was good at that. I always thought, if we could get off to a good start in that first round, place and get a little money, I had a good head horse and if we drew decent we just had to make good runs.

I was really sick that year. I tried to draw out on rich, I had been puking for about two or three hours. My wife and I got food poisoning that night. I had the fever and the sweats and I tried to get him somebody else. I told rich whoever he got to replace me could ride Bob, I just wanted to lay in the truck and die. he said, “I don’t want to rope with anybody else, I want you.” I puked all day long. we placed in the short round that year, when the gates banged I thought I’d seen enough and I welded it out of there because all I wanted to do was go lay down. that one, to me, it was a fond memory because I give all the credit to that horse. all I did was set up there and I tried to score and then he’d run me to the cow and I’d rope and then I would just go out the back of the arena. I tell you what, that was a rough day.
2001 SPEED WIllIAMS
I rode Bob for all three of my BfI wins. I won all my u.s. finals titles on Bob. the George strait I won on three different horses. that horse could run so fast. I still pay the consequences for riding him: going to the chiropractor and getting my back worked on. when he left the back of the box, it was like you were on a rocket. you can’t overcome that speed when you get to those jackpots. he would buck, though. on those cold mornings, like at the BfI, my alarm clock would go off at 4 a.m. and I’d have to go get him saddled to get the buck out of him. he never bucked in competition and I always made sure he was warmed up. he was an outlaw and didn’t like people. now, he’s retired in the pasture.

roany, he could really run, too. one thing about it there, if you got out too quick on the heeling side, you could push those steers into the left wall. But if you have a horse that could run, with that long start, you could ease up around them and it sure helped. he’s retired, turned out down at my father-in-law’s ranch.

SITUATION
graves: I was just thinking I needed to do what I’ve been doing all day. as many times as we’ve done this and been in this kind of situation, nerves don’t really come into play. we had to be 8-something, and Clay roped him to be 7, so I just had to do my job and catch.
STEER
graves: the steer really ran a little, but he ran straight. Clay roped him and held him up a little bit, and I’m picking my horse up here getting ready to make the corner.
SITUATION
Tryan: we were high callback, and I think we needed to be 8-something to win it. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t break out, and that I caught and finished good so I didn’t make my partner slip a leg. nerves really aren’t a factor here, I really just look at this as another steer. I’ve won the BfI three times now, and it’s rare to get that many opportunities to win a roping like this, so I just didn’t want to waste that chance.
BODy POSITION
Tryan: My left hand is holding dew up to soften the corner, but I really don’t have to do much. dew is a great horse, and that’s what separates him and makes him so great. I’ve watched videos of myself on him, and my feet hustle him and kick a little to drive him forward, but I’m mainly keeping my feet down underneath my shoulders and riding correctly. But really, all of that has to be done before I ever make a run, I’m just reacting at this point.
HORSE
HORSE
graves: I’m riding superstar in the photo. I’ve won everything on that horse. the BfI, the wildfire three times, everything major I’ve won on him. he’s real honest, he can run, which is handy to have there, and he never takes my throw away.
Tryan: I’m riding dew in this picture. he was 13 then. he really works good everywhere. I mean, I think he’s the best horse in the world, so it’s an advantage to ride one that good in this tough set up. he runs hard, he scores great.
BODy POSITION
graves: My left hand is holding my horse up so he doesn’t cut the corner, and the tip of my rope is pointed at the steer’s back. that way, I’m already timing my steer, and when I turn the corner my swing is level and the angle of my rope is right to throw. I’m hustling him and using my legs to ride him down the arena and get him to the right spot.
STEER
THE WIN
graves: It was a huge dream to win. as a kid, I always watched the BfI tapes. It was just really a fun roping and a lot of fun to win.
Tryan: this was probably the best steer we had all day, even though we didn’t really know what he was going to do before hand. we had time to work with, and this steer just ran straight down the arena with his head up and handled great, too.
THE WIN
Tryan: It’s a huge honor to win the BfI, and a really big accomplishment for my career. there are a few major ropings that really mean a lot, and the BfI is one. It’s like the Masters in golf. when I was growing up, it was the big roping that started it all. everything else came after the BfI as far as prestige.

Preacher Man
Brad Culpepper’s 2012 Top BFI Heel Horse
Brad Culpepper’s horse Preacher doesn’t win many awards. You see, most “Horse of the _____” prizes are sponsored by a breed association—and in rodeo it’s usually not the American Paint Horse Association. His fl ashy palomino Paint does, however, turn heads. Whether it’s simply his color or the way he works, people take notice. In fact, last year, the organizers at the Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping Classic noticed enough to award the tobiano top heel horse of the BFI. “Paint horses don’t get much recognition at all,” Culpepper. “So it was pretty special to get some recognition. It was also special because my dad had been gone for two years. He’d have gotten a kick out of it and bragged and told everybody about it. That’s what made it special for me.” It was a friend of Culpepper’s father, in fact, whose head was fi rst turned by the horse. He was a 4-year-old stud standing in a pasture with a few cows. “He looked like a Welsh pony, big head, big neck, no butt,” Culpepper said. “My dad and his buddy bought the horse for $400 apiece—just for something to do. My dad brought him home and I broke him and I started riding him. We were going to make something for the grandkids. Somewhere along the way, the other guy sold his share out to my dad. I kept riding him and riding him and he just kept getting better and better.” Culpepper’s rodeo routine was to compete nationally one year, then the next year compete locally. Riley Minor’s Top BFI Head Horse Riley Minor’s professional roping career is yet young. wife and I just had our first child that year, a month prior I had won the Oakdale 10-steer and after the roping was over I was waiting in the casino to go have dinner with my dad and some other friends. At that time I believe the roping paid $10,400, which was the most it had ever paid. It was a real exciting time for my little family at that particular moment.”
“I wish we could have that 35-foot score again. That was a roping contest.” “It’s a game of patience. You’ve got to rope aggressive, but you’ve got to be smart. I’ve always looked at the BFI as a five-header to get to a oneheader. You just got to get close.”
“We still want to win; once a competitor always a competitor. I go there to win, those competitive juices never go away. I love to go do battle against those guys. I respect them and their ability. We still rope good enough. If it’s our day, we can win that roping.”
“The BFI is the greatest roping in the world and I commend Bob Feist for sticking to it and gutting it out. I think he revolutionized the whole team roping jackpot industry.”
