We continue to promote local, home grown talent and are delighted to welcome back ‘The Bonfire Radicals’ with their heady mix of Eastern European music. We also welcome the involvement of the local schools, John Bentley and St. Mary’s, as well as the primary schools’ magnificent choirs whose repertoire this year will be the songs of Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra. Calne Choral makes a welcome return with Karl Jenkins’ Requiem. A fringe event with the Crofton Stokers will this year be taking place in The London Road Inn. Local artists, both professional and amateur, will be exhibiting their work in Marden House and Calne Camera Club will be exhibiting in the Heritage Centre. Marden House, our main concert venue, is open daily for viewers to the art exhibition, lunchtime and evening concerts and CODAs. Lunches are available after the midday concerts and a bar operates most evenings. We are most grateful to Chilvester Financial for being our main sponsor for the third consecutive year, as well as to all our other sponsors, helpers and Friends who contribute in such an important way to the smooth running of the Festival. We are delighted that David Inshaw, the renowned Devizes based artist, has agreed to open the Festival for us this year.

Music
Welcome
Once again the Calne Music and Arts Committee has put together a quality programme of music and the arts for this ten-day Festival, a programme which encompasses music and art of all genres. ‘Something for everyone’, as the expression goes. So we hope that you will again turn out in great numbers for this annual celebration and enjoy what is on offer.
Music Programme We hope you enjoy the wide range of music arranged for our 2016 Festival which combines performers of all ages and musical genres into a varied, informative and entertaining programme. Our Festival opens with a concert from two choirs, the BlueBelles and the Blue Notes, offering a varied and entertaining repertoire to suit all moods and tastes (2). We then have jazz treats on the first Saturday with Clarinettist and Saxaphonist, Chris Gradwell with Music Deco (5) followed by Chippenham based Saxophonics (6), all making their Festival debuts. This year’s Sunday afternoon recital (7) explores the works of Jewish composers and the Holocaust, when we will also hear from a Holocaust survivor. Other performers making their Festival debuts will be The Kennet Accordion Orchestra (10), Calne Larks (11), PSG Choir (13), The Bybrook Duo (17), pianist Paul Ogden (15), Great Western Tears (20) and The Crofton Stockers (25). Following with the tradition of our Festival, the next generation of musicians are well represented with performances by Marlborough College (9), Devizes School (21), the combined choirs of our local primary schools (12), ABRSM High Scorers’ Concert (23), and a special primary schools Revolting Rhymes workshop to celebrate Roald Dahl’s 100th anniversary (16). Continuing with the Jewish theme, and after their sell out performance in 2014, we are delighted to welcome back Katie Stevens’ world folk group Bonfire Radicals to open the second weekend (22). Calne Choral Society (24) make a welcome return and will be joined by St Mary’s Junior School Consort and full orchestra for a special performance of Karl Jenkins’ Requiem. To conclude the Festival we have invited local pianist and composer James Harpham [and Sherlock Jnr] (27) for a silent movie and an evening of relaxing jazz piano. What better way to wind down after a packed week of entertainment! Simon Parker, Music Advisor

Their programme will include music by Bach, Handel and Gershwin. There will be something for everyone to enjoy.
The Great Western Tears are a Country band hailing from Oxford including local Calne singer Fern Thornton who play Rural Roots music with a backbone. Taking their name from the mountains of Northern Tasmania and forged in the fields and forests below, they believe that ‘Authenticity’ is as much about lifestyle as it is musicianship. Matching the muscular swagger of the Blues, the lived- in lyricism of Country and the dark heart of English Folk they finely craft both personal and universal tales you can sink your teeth in to... “a sure footed pedal steel fuelled swagger” Americana UK.
