The branch line between Castlemaine and Maldon was closed in December 1976. However, within weeks the Castlemaine and Maldon Railway Preservation Society was established with the aim of preserving this wonderful and unique piece of railway history for all Victorians to enjoy. Lovingly restored in stages from Maldon, the many bridges, cuttings and embankments were reconstructed to enable the first train to reach Castlemaine in 2005. A partnership between the Victorian Goldfields Railway and Steamrail Victoria has enabled this historic event, the first steam train to travel from Melbourne to Maldon in almost 40 years! Our train departs Southern Cross at 8.44am, hauled by R761 and K190. After experiencing all the famous features of the main line, we will arrive in Castlemaine to find oil-burning J549 waiting ready for duty. Here passengers will alight as carriages are transferred to the tourist railway on the other side of the island platform. Our R Class will be placed aside for the day as K190 is turned before joining forces with the J Class to haul our train on the branch.
Then as dusk surrounds us, you will once again hear the magnificent sound of two locomotives working hard together, this time R761 and D3 639, as they attack the ascent out of Castlemaine to begin the final leg of our journey. Arriving at Southern Cross at 10.10pm, you will alight with many wonderful photographs and memories. • So come and join us on this very special occasion. The tour has drawn widespread interest, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
