BORDO NEWS WINTER 2012
“We felt from the outset that the Bordo building should incorporate any ESD elements that were readily available, cost effective, and practical. We wanted a building that was better for our staff and for the environment.” Cameron Brown, Bordo. As part of our ongoing commitment to minimising our environmental footprint, Bordo has installed an 85kW array of solar panels on the office and warehouse roof. The power generated by the array is expected to cover all the power we consume, and will provide long-term benefits to our costs and our carbon impact. Bordo continues to be at the leading edge of sustainable practises, with our headquarters in Melbourne being one of the first buildings in Australia to be awarded a 5 Star Energy Rating by the Green Building Council of Australia. Our electricity usage will be carefully monitored over time so we can gather as much data as possible. This will give us insight in to how the solar array is helping to reduce our use of grid electricity, and tell us how much we are feeding in. “We were all amazed at how simple things could make a great difference to the energy usage of the building. By partnering with the Sustainable Energy Authority and engaging consultants Sustainable Built Environments, it became apparent that there were many design elements that could be incorporated into the building design for little or no extra cost.” Cameron Brown, Bordo.
BORDO DESIGN AND INNOVATION
Bordo prides itself not just on the quality of its products, but also on the design and quality of its packaging and merchandising.
DRILL SET CASES Bordo’s drill set cases were designed five years ago in conjunction with leading Australian industrial design company Cobalt Niche Design in North Melbourne. The design process took twelve months and it took another six months for the final tooling to be complete. Bordo’s drill set cases have been awarded two prestigious design awards. These cases are used for all Bordo branded drill sets including bright finish, black finish and cobalt drills. They are available in three sizes for metric and three sizes for imperial. Bordo has been flattered over recent years by competitors attempting to copy our innovative sets. In both cases these “imitations” have failed to gain any traction in the marketplace – a big thank you to all our loyal customers!
NEW HOLE SAW SET CASES Bordo has now developed two new blow moulded cases for its hole saw range. Two different sized cases have been designed. Tooling for the smaller of the two is complete and due for release in Australia in July. The new range of sets that use the larger case are scheduled for August release. The case is very robust and rugged featuring an internal storage compartment with a lid for miscellaneous items and a soft grip TPR handle. Because of their design, the hole saw set cases are easily stackable. The contents of Bordo’s new sets have been specially designed for the Australian market. The Plumber’s set, for example, contains hole saws sizes to suit all common copper, PEX (Pexal), and PVC pipe diameters. The Locksmith’s set includes a high quality 25mm chisel and commonly used spade bits in addition to four bi-metal hole saws. All sizes are specifically chosen to suit Australian door locks and handles. The new sets will compliment the new hole saw packaging and merchandisers released last year.

NEW PRODUCT
PRODUCT FEATURE
At the end of the first quarter 2012 we released our range of HSS Annular Cutters to the Australian market. June sees the release of a range of heavy duty bench merchandisers.
ANNULAR CUTTERS Bordo Annular Cutters achieve burr-free finished holes without the need for pre-drilling and are faster and more accurate than using standard HSS twist drills. Bordo’s Annular Cutters are CNC ground and feature multicut geometry for smooth and fast cutting. The precision ground flutes run the entire length of the cutter providing efficient chip removal.
Step hardened tooth tips retain point hardness increasing cutter performance and extending tool life. Extra large fully ground and relieved flutes reduce friction and enhance chip removal allowing increased feed rates. Alloyed HSS body absorbs high torque loads to minimise tool failure. 3/4” (19.05mm) universal shank with 2 flats and 3 dimples to suit all common magnetic base drilling machines.
BORDO ANNULAR CUTTERS FEATURE: • Increased cutting speed • Reduce tooth load • Minimized tool wear • Extended tool life • Close tolerance drilling without runout • Resharpenable Bordo Annular Cutters feature a 3/4” universal shank that suits most standard machines including: Hougen, Slugger, Rotabroach, Rotabest, and Nitto.
TECHNOLOGY IN PICKING / WAREHOUSING / DISPATCH
The technology used at Bordo International allows for greater speed, efficiency, and accuracy either while on the road or at the warehouse. Since the iPad was released in 2010 we have been able to substantially increase our efficiency and accuracy. In our warehouse iPads with wireless bluetooth fob scanners are linked via internet browsers to our ERP system, and are used to: • Count stock • Find inventory • Organise stock locations • Build orders (paperless) • Pick orders • Dispatch and receipt goods We are trialling a new style of barcode scanner which is fitted to our Sales Reps’ iPhones allowing them to take orders and check stock levels and other product and account information instantaneously.

STAFF PROFILES ANNA JEFFREY Customer Service Manager. Anna is a regular at music festivals across Australia and is a keen fan of Melbourne’s live music scene. On most weekends you’ll find her at a local vegie swap or scouring Op Shops and markets for the latest eclectic fashion. “11 years ago I started working for Bordo. Something I learnt from the beginning was the importance and value of customer service for the Bordo Team. Over the years, Bordo has had several experts come talk to us on how we can improve our customer service. While they all talk about the basics, it amazes me how they never focus on the specifics, the specifics the Bordo team and I pride ourselves on. Everyone in our sales team has a knowledge of our products and we are always trying to expand on that through on site demos and improving technical information in our catalogues. Our learning expands as we encounter issues needing to be resolved and whoever resolves them reports back to the team so we can all benefit from the expanded information. While management and product experts are available to help answer particularly technical or specialised questions, most of the time the person who answers the phone can help answer the question. Bordo also allows us to have some really flexible powers in customer service giving us the authority to
make certian decisions quickly for the customer. This not only makes it quicker and easier for the customer in many situations, but also streamlines our workload in the office. This is really helpful in situations when things go wrong, and, realistically, good customer service really shows in these situations. Anna B, Anne, and I can fix problems that occur from helping advise the right tool, to chasing down lost consignments or ensuring urgent orders go the same day the order is placed. Most people know that building relationships is an important part of customer service, but Bordo takes it to a different level. We like to get to know our customers not just because it’s our job, but because we like it too. The girls and I are always chatting to someone, which helps us to understand their business, but also makes our job more rewarding. If you’re ever in the area, why not pop in and have a look at our showroom and have a drink?”
SEAN JOHN Area Sales Representative, VIC. Sean was a Chippy in his younger days but the lure of a warm car and chin wagging over coffee was too great. Despite being an AFL Tigers tragic Sean is married and has two wonderful kids. Sean John has been working at Bordo as the Victorian Area Manager for five years. He prides himself on doing everything possible to ensure his customers are kept up to date with specials, new products and updated merchandising. “I like to think that I’m genuine in my approach to sales and am honestly interested in my customers’ businesses, not just trying to push product on them. It benefits us if the range my clients carry reflects their industries and the products aren’t lying around collecting dust. I think the most important aspect for an external sales person, and I think this applies to internal staff as
well, is if you say you’re going to do something — do it! Customers will forgive once, maybe twice but after that, you will lose their trust if you don’t follow through on promises. It helps to have the confidence in the product range you are marketing, and with Bordo I know the quality is second to none. It also helps if you have great internal support. Bordo’s customer service team, I believe, is the best in the industry and this is often echoed by my clients.”
