With his victories Sunday in the Pacific Classic and Del Mar Mile, as well as two other races on the card, jockey Mike Smith continued his spectacular season at Del Mar, where he leads all riders in stakes wins and is just two wins back of the top spot in the overall standings despite riding far fewer horses than his competitors at the top of the jockey standings. “He’s a sensational big-money rider,” said Jerry Hollendorfer, the trainer and co-owner of Shared Belief, who won the Pacific Classic. “Mike is really in the groove.” Through Sunday, Smith has won with 24 of 93 mounts, a strike rate of 26 percent. He is tied for second in the standings with Kent Desormeaux and Elvis Trujillo, all three of them two back of leading rider Rafael Bejarano, who has 26 wins. But Desormeaux (126 mounts), Trujillo (156), and Bejarano (147) have ridden far more horses this summer. For Smith, it has been about quality more so than quantity. Eight of his 24 wins have been in stakes races, seven of them graded. Smith turned 49 at this meet, but his dedicated workout regimen keeps him in better shape than

guys half his age. During the week of the Pacific Classic, he would regularly run three miles a day and hit the gym, “and I wasn’t out drinking wine,” he said. “I wanted this race so bad,” Smith said after the Pacific Classic. “I trained so hard for this race.” Smith’s agent, Brad Pegram, believes one of the reasons Smith has done so well this summer is that he has not traveled one time – not to Saratoga, not to Arlington. There were opportunities to do so. But the best opportunities were at Del Mar. With the meet ending Sept. 3, Smith has a chance to finish strong. He is scheduled to ride likely favorite Enterprising in the Grade 2, $300,000 Del Mar Derby on Sunday, Winning Rhythm in the Grade 2, $200,000 Yellow Ribbon Handicap on Monday – both those races are on turf – and will have mounts in both the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante on Saturday and the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on closing day, Sept. 3.

and extensively watered overnight, all designed to keep the course in excellent shape through the final week-plus of the meet. “We’ve been heavily watering it once a week,” Leif Dickinson, the turf course and grounds superintendent at Del Mar, said Tuesday. Racing was suspended on Del Mar’s turf course twice this meet, owing to injuries. The performance of the course has improved since it has been aerated and heavily watered on a regular basis.

Obviously to train up to Breeders’ Cup Mile Obviously, who finished fourth on Sunday as the favorite in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile after breaking poorly, came out of the race in good condition and will be trained straight into the Breeders’ Cup Mile, without a prep, trainer Phil D’Amato said Tuesday. “That was the original plan before the race, and just because he didn’t win, I don’t want to change,” D’Amato said. “He runs well fresh, and he loves Santa Anita.

I know we can have him ready to run his best race off the bench.” Obviously turned his head to the side just as the gate opened Sunday, causing him to get off poorly and then rush to the front. After setting blistering fractions of 22.20 seconds, 45.32, and 1:09.42 for the first six furlongs, he tired and finished 2 1/4 lengths behind the victorious Tom’s Tribute. Obviously finished fifth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile and third in 2012. Both races were won by two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan.

Itsmyluckyday to Spendthrift Farm in 2015 By DRF Breeding staff Classic-placed multiple Grade 3 winner Itsmyluckyday will make his stallion debut in 2015 at B. Wayne Hughes’s Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky. The 4-year-old son of Lawyer Ron will continue to race through his 2014 campaign before joining the stallion roster at Spendthrift for the 2015 breeding season. He is scheduled to race in Saturday’s Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga. Itsmyluckyday is being offered immediately to breeders through Spendthrift’s Share the Upside program, honoring a lock-in fee of $7,500 when the foal stands and nurses. However, his ultimate fee is subject to change depending on future race results. Itsmyluckyday has won 8 of 18 career starts for earnings of $1,302,600, including victories in the Grade 3 Salvator Mile and Holy Bull Stakes. He set the track record at Gulfstream Park for 1 1/16 miles in the latter effort. The colt has also won five listed stakes, and hs finished second in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes, Florida Derby, and most recently in the Whitney Stakes. “Spendthrift remains committed to offering breeders exciting young stallion prospects in our Share The Upside program, and we’re thrilled to be able to add a colt of Itsmyluckyday’s quality to our future stallion ranks,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift Farm general manager. “We saw that quality in the Whitney against maybe the best field of older horses assembled so far in 2014, and we believe that performance is a sign of great things to come.” Bred in Kentucky by Liberation Farm and Brandywine Farm, Itsmyluckyday is out of the stakes-placed Doneraile Court mare Viva La Slew, who is the dam of one winner from three foals to race. He is from the family of Grade 1 winner and sire Vicar, French classic winner Astronomer Royal, and Grade 2 winner Navesink River.

Dayatthespa to be offered at Fasig-Tipton November Grade 1 winner Dayatthespa will be offered at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale at the end of her

autumn campaign. The 5-year-old City Zip mare will be consigned by Lane’s End as agent for owners Jerry Frankel, Ronald Frankel, Steve Laymon, and Bradley Thoroughbreds. She is trained by Chad Brown and is aiming for the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland Race Course after winning the Yaddo Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 24. In total, Dayatthespa has won 9 of 16 starts for earnings of $948,892. Her career highlights include wins in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes and the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes and Appalachian Stakes. She has also won five listed stakes and placed in three additional graded stakes.

Tom Keyser

“We are very excited to offer Dayatthespa this November at Fasig-Tipton,” said Bill Farish, president of Lane’s End Farm. “She continually gives her fans goose bumps on the track and should provide the same excitement in the sales ring as she moves onto the next stage of her career.” The New York-bred Dayatthespa is out of the unplaced Doc’s Leader mare M‘Lady Doc, whose four foals to race are all winners. Dayatthespa is from the family of Grade 2 winner Clev Er Tell and Grade 3 winner Phi Beta Doc. The Fasig-Tipton November sale will be held Monday, Nov. 3, at Fasig-Tipton’s Newtown Paddocks base in Lexington, Ky.

Florida launches breeders’ award bonus, stallion bonus program By DRF Breeding staff The board of directors for the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association has announced a 12 percent breeders’ award bonus and a 15 percent stallion owner bonus. According to the FTBOA, those bonuses result in the highest payout to date in the state’s breeding program. “This breeders’ bonus will elevate overall breeders’ awards paid [in 2013] to the highest percentage in our history – 17 percent – which exceeds our previous record percentage we were able to award in 2012,” said FTOBA President George Russell. “Additionally, our stallion owners will benefit from a new bonus program. Economic progress in these challenging times for our industry nation-wide is not easy to achieve. We in Florida are fortunate to offer some of the top breeding and racing opportunities within one of the best environments in the country.” The bonuses had been in discussion for nearly two years, but were stalled by the battle for race dates between Gulfstream Park and Calder Race Course. The incentive programs were approved once the two

tracks reached an agreement ceasing headto-head racing. “Over the last 20 months no race has been run at Gulfstream without a Floridabred or FSS supplement, plainly showing owners and trainers the benefits of buying and racing Florida-breds,” said Fred Brei, chairman of the FTBOA racing and stakes committee. “At Gulfstream currently, Florida-breds are 58.5 percent of starters and make up 59 percent of the winners. And our 2-year-old program is the strongest it has been in many, many years. These two bonus payments are nothing but positive for the breeders, owners and trainers of Florida-breds.” The breeders’ award bonus of 12 percent applies to recipients of Florida breeders’ awards for races run in the 2013 calendar year. The stallion owners’ bonus of 15 percent applies to current FTBOA registered Florida stallions whose progeny won Florida breeders’ awards in stakes races in the 2013 calendar year. The stallion must have been an FTBOA registered stallion the year their progeny won the breeders’ award and when it was conceived to receive the bonus. As a future note, registering a stallion

standing in Florida as an FTBOA registered stallion by Feb. 15 annually ensures that when bonuses are authorized, the horse meets the requirement to receive one. At this point, the Board has authorized a stallion bonus for 2013 only, however, the final goal is to establish a consistent, ongoing program annual in the future. Bonuses will be paid out prior to the FTBOA annual meeting to be held Oct. 23. Breeders who won awards in 2013 are required to have a current W-9 on file if they have not done so. Breeders who have already won and been paid out awards in 2014, already have a current W-9 on file and do not need to re-file. “The ongoing uncertainty about racing dates and wagering estimates over the past few years has really made projecting possible awards more than challenging,” Brei said. “We anticipate that situation improving under the new arrangement between Gulfstream and Calder and providing the Racing & Stakes Committee with some much needed consistency and stability that, on a go forward basis, should give us the foundation to better project and plan for possible additional enhancements in the years to come.”

Breeder of the Week: Joanne Nielsen By DRF Breeding staff Joanne Nielsen, who along with her late husband Jerry became influential figures in the New York Thoroughbred breeding industry over the past quarter-century, was represented by rising statebred star Upstart on Sunday’s New York showcase card at Saratoga. Upstart, a Flatter ridgling, improved his career record to 2 for 2 with a one-length win in the 6 1/2-furlong Funny Cide Stakes for 2-year-olds. That followed a 5 1/4-length romp in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight for New York-breds at the Spa just nine days earlier on Aug. 15. Trained by Rick Violette for owner Ralph Evans, Upstart has earned Beyer Speed Figures of 85 and 95 in his first two starts, and Violette said that the Grade 1, one-mile Champagne at Belmont on Oct. 4 is his next target, with the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland – now run on dirt – on the same date as a second option. Evans bought the ridgling for $130,000 last summer at the FasigTipton New York-bred preferred yearling sale from the consignment of Francis and Barbara Vanlangendock’s Summerfield, agent. Upstart is out of the 10-year-old Touch Gold mare Party Silks, who was unraced. Party Silks was bred by Joanne and Jerry Nielsen and was born shortly before Jerry Nielsen’s passing in February 1994. The Nielsens had purchased Party Silks’s dam, the stakes-placed Housebuster mare Intend to Win, for $120,000 at the 2001 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Intend to Win is the dam of Grade 2 winner and $480,000 earner Josh’s Madelyn. The Nielsens originally bought Sunnyfield Farm, near Bedford, N.Y., and near the Connecticut state line, with three other families as property for their children to

The Nielsens, commercial real estate managers, eventually acquired full ownership of Sunnyfield and, starting in the late 1970s, developed one of the state’s signature breeding programs. Among their many statebred standouts were millionaire and Grade 1 winner Capades and 2001 New York turf champion I’m All Yours. The couple was honored as New York Breeders of the Year in 1991 and 2001,

and Jerry Nielsen served as president of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders before his death, early in his third term. His influence on the industry continues to be recognized via the annual Gerald A. Nielsen New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. Scholarship. Joanne Nielsen remains involved in NYTB and is also an active member of other animal-related communities in the region, including those devoted to border collies.

Pennsylvania Derby lures the big horse The Pennsylvania Derby was run on Labor Day from 1990 to 2009, a nice race for 3-year-olds that had very little national juice. It was too close to the Travers and too far from the Breeders’ Cup to attract the best horses in the division. Prior to that 20-year stint on Labor Day, the Pennsylvania Derby had first been run on Memorial Day from 1979-84 and then in mid-September, late September, or early October from 1985-89. Once slot-machine money started to kick in when the machines went live in late 2006, an opportunity arose for Parx and its signature race to become national players. Management had the money to attract the big boys, but it was never going to happen on Labor Day, even with the purse raised to $1 million. The decision was made in 2010 to move the Pennsylvania Derby to later in September, a month after the Travers and six weeks before the Breeders’ Cup. A bonus system was instituted to give an incentive to the connections of any horse who won a Triple Crown race, the Haskell, or the Travers to run in the Pennsylvania Derby. The race went on local television in 2011. In 2012, the Cotillion, a new Grade 1 race, was moved to Pennsylvania Derby Day to give Parx an “event” to build around. That year, the Travers dead-heat winners (Alpha and Golden Ticket) traveled south to run in the Pennsylvania Derby. Last year, the top two runners in another photofinish Travers (Will Take Charge and Moreno) came to Parx. Will Take Charge

DICK JERARDI

won the race and went on to become the first Pennsylvania Derby winner to be named champion 3-year-old male. The timing of the race, the purse, and the bonus had given Parx a chance to attract the “big” horse. This year, the track got the biggest horse of all. Since the race was moved four years ago, there is no doubt that the most popular and accomplished 3-year-old during that span has been California Chrome, whose résumé includes a six-race winning streak earlier this year; wins in the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby, and Preakness; and finishing less than two lengths away from from winning the Triple Crown when fourth in the Belmont. When California Chrome got his postTriple Crown break at Harris Farms in the San Joaquin Valley, the Pennsylvania Derby had its opening. The colt simply was not going to be ready for any of the other major summer 3-year-old stakes. The only issue was geography. In a perfect world, trainer Art Sherman would rather not have to put California Chrome on a plane for the only race he would run prior to the Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic. But the race at Parx simply made too much sense – the timing, the purse, and the $200,000 in bonuses that Sherman and the owners will share. Essentially, California Chrome will be heavily favored to win $800,000: the $600,000 for winning and the $200,000 for coming out of the starting gate. The decision to come east really wasn’t that complicated. It was either that or run in the Grade 1, $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes on Sept. 27 at Santa Anita against older horses for a winner’s share that would be less than the bonus.

THE AMERICAN

“Santa Anita said, ‘We know the $100,000 that you and the owners will get made your decision,’” Sherman told me last week. “I told them, ‘It sure as hell helped.’” On Sept. 20, Parx Racing, once Keystone and then Philadelphia Park, is scheduled to host its first Kentucky Derby winner. Spectacular Bid made the final start of his 2-year-old season in the 1978 Heritage Stakes at Keystone. Smarty Jones made the first two starts of his career at Philadelphia Park, his home track. The Chapmans and trainer John Servis had actually planned to skip the 2004 Travers and run Smarty Jones in that year’s Pennsylvania Derby, but the colt was retired a few weeks before the race. So, Sept. 20 will be the biggest day not just in the 40-year history of Parx but in the history of Pennsylvania racing. California Chrome will be the story, but he won’t be the only story. The $1 million Cotillion is definitely getting Kentucky Oaks winner Untapable, probably three-time Grade 1 winner Sweet Reason, and possibly Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama winner Stopchargingmaria. The track will get every bit the event it was hoping for when the races were joined up in 2012. By next year, the Pennsylvania Derby is likely to join the Cotillion as a Grade 1 race. When you attract the eventual 3-year-old champion male and the Derby and Preakness winner in consecutive years, committees notice. With California Chrome running, awareness of the race will increase dramatically for owners, trainers, and fans. That was the whole idea when the Pennsylvania Derby was moved from Labor Day. In Year 5 of the Great Move, the Pennsylvania Derby has hit a home run.
