Jan 20, 2014 ... an important figure connecting the people of the region and people .... Also the bridge looking like two mountains says to me it .... But I can only think of one woman memorialized in a Portland landmark (Joan ..... Regardless of their intended meanings and background each of these names SOUNDS stupid.

Comment I like all of these (4) names. My tongue likes Wy'east the most, my sensibilities want Duniway, yet I believe the best choice is Tillicum Crossing. Abigal Scott Duniway would be honored to have been the namesake of our new bridge. She was an important figure connecting the people of the region and people to the region. How fitting to have her name on our bridge that will accomplish the same goal. She was progressive in her ideals as is Oregon today. The other names seem not as suitable: Cascadia refers to falling water-the Wiliamette is a bit more leisurely, Tillicum refers to people not really transit, and Wyeast, although definitely needs to be used more in our area, is a lovely mountain and not a bridge. Wyeast would be my 2nd choice.

Please name the bridge after Abigail Scott Duniway; this is he perfect name for this structure and piece of history. Cascadia Crossings...do NOT name it Tillicum...maybe locals overlook how this can be made fun of but nationally people realize how hilarious this is. I am please the native Americans are being given recognition. I strongly support WyEast

6

WyEast is the name for me from those you have listed or even better Chief Joseph ! ! ! !!

7

Abigail Scott Duniway! We need more public infrastructure named after mighty women!

Yes to the Tillicum Crossing - this is the one. My original thought was Chinook People's Bridge - and had no idea there were so many others thinking the same. This is great. It seems to me that, while the other submissions are good, hitting the history of our area, the the people who lived and still live here, who used and crossed the same river, makes so much sense. It seems the "peoples" component hits the right note - given the purpose of the bridge, and the idea of connections. Yes to Tillicum Crossing! I like the Wyéast name! Cascadia! I think it works for Portland and the NWs vision of the future. Cascadia is a name that is overused around town and has less impactful meaning than the rest. Tillicum is my favorite in both the spirit of its meaning and in its honoring of the Chinook heritage. I vote for Duniway. Equal rights applies to all people in Oregon and duniway was an extraordinary pioneer in Oregon as well as on a national level. Equal rights resonates with the struggles of many groups in Oregon since the early pioneers arrived in the state, to present and future groups. Wy'east Please name the bridge after Abigail Scott Duniway. Her work was magnificent! Time for a bridge named after a woman, especially this one. Her brother Harvey has a statue in Mt Tabor Park. He was a sexist and racist. Time for his sister to get the recognition she deserves Cascadia bridge is the easiest name to remember from the choices and also the name most recognizably representative of our community. The two C words go together well and speak to me of the great mountain range that provides us water and aplace to go to recreate.

Comment I agree that Abigail Scott Duniway is the rightful name for this exquisite new bridge. As others have said- it is time to recognize an important woman. If those are the four to choose from, clearly Cascadia is the best choice. It denotes a general sense of pride in the region without endorsing any specific political or social group. Plus it's a familiar concept. Tillicum, a simple name that defines the essence of the bridge from it's earliest inception. It also has layers of meaning and history; giving tribute the native people and the river on which they sustained. Tillicum Crossing. Pay homage to the Native Americans. I love the idea of commemorating Abigail Scott Duniway. There are not a whole lot of female dedicated monuments or important places around Portland and that would really leave a lasting impression. Love the Abigail Scott Duniway - 1st choice Tillicum - 2nd choice Tillicum to me is the most honoring name for the original people, the land and the heritage of this area we live in. Since the bridge will not connect any city streets, drivers will seldom make reference to it. In daily usage, it will become, "the transit bridge." Or, the "bike bridge." Since drivers don't use it, no one will really care what the name is. Portland is very progressive in terms of multimodal awareness but car-centric is still the reality. Maybe it will be referred to as "the beautiful bridge." Abigail Scott Duniway is the name I like best after learning about what each possible name stood for. Tillicum is used too much in Washington, and Cascadia is pretty, but worth honoring? Not so sure. Wy'east is good, but we see Mt. Hood almost daily. Time to honor some PDX woman who pioneered our great city. Just my two cents. All four are sort of boring and poor choices. There must have been more exciting choices that would give "life" to the bridge". I predict none of the names chosen will be used to reference the new bridge. Abigail Scott Duniway! I love all the names and what they represent but this is my favorite. It will encourage people (not just schoolchildren) to learn more about the brave women who fought for representation for their gender here and around the world - many suffering terribly and even dying in the process - and honor those women who still fight for the right to vote today. Trillicum gets my vote. Wy'east - signifies connecting east and west; recognizes one of Oregon's "crown jewels" - Mt. Hood Tillicum! People's bridge; honors native americans, good choice. I really like the Cascadia Bridge for a name. I really get tired of bridges, highways, and etc... being named after specific people in general. Cascadia is simple, it sounds good, and represents something we can all get behind. Abigail Scott Duniway is who the Bridge should be named after. Someone local, strong, and with history here.

Comment Cascadia Transit bridge is my vote. Clearly the name represents bridge both in transportation and for the regions' s economic goals. Look to the history of the "Cascadia Region" to see how well the name fits the new bridge's function. Lets bring together multiple modes of transportation with places to go, places to see, places to shop, and with family & friends to share our lives with.

I like Cascadia crossing the most.Gives the feeling of the Northwest. Duniway I love the wy east name what better way to carry our herritage into the twentith centry then to name the bridge after our own great culture here in the northwest. thanks for my input.

As someone who visits Mt Hood frequently I think it is a great idea to name the new bridge the Wy'east. We have such a great view if Mt Hood from downtown we should honor it in some way.

Go with Wy'east. It is local, Mt. Hood can be seen from the area of the bridge, and the bridge's design is reminiscent of our beloved landmark. Plus it is an easy name to refer to; ie, "you just cross the Wy'east." Or, perhaps, it will just be referred to as the "Wy." Wy'east . For all the reasons noted above. And it just sounds nice. My vote is for tillicum! We don't really have anything in the area honoring our Native American roots of this area. I also love the meaning behind the name. Wy' east is the better name for several reasons: 1: its easy to pronounce and spell 2. its short which is practical for road signs and reference 3. The name itself has nothing to do with political correctness and honors the beautiful land and the traditions of the original inhabitants 4. Honoring a person necessarily excludes the interests of others Cascada crossed says it all Cascada crossed says it all Cascada crossed says it all Abigail Scott Duniway Abigail Scott Duniway Transit Bridge My vote for Tillicum Crossing! Wy’east Transit Bridge Wy’east Transit Bridge First choice: Tillicum Crossing Second choice: Abigail Scott Tillicum has a nice ring to it and its got a lot of meaning for our region. Wy'east gets my vote. Reason? The public submission rationale sums this up very well. The name has a synergy with the other bridge names. Wy'east stands strong by itself, yet lends legend and strength to all the bridges as a whole. I believe that it is important to honor the Native American culture and heritage of our great state and city and would choose Wy'East Transit Bridge for the new name, although my submission of Wy'East Crossing is preferred. Wy'East! Cascadia! Or wyeast. Both speak to me. Please pick one or the other. Thanks Very exciting !!!!!

Comment Wy'east. For the reasons stated by others! Also, it has a good sound to it when said out loud. All good choices. I am wondering if the natives want a bridge named in their language. Cascadia crossing is so very hip, I'm tempted (esp as walking and public transit is so hip, too), and if it were easier to roll off the tongue, the first would be my first choice...hum... Abigail Scott Duniway Transit Bridge would speak loudly on the progressive Portland. This would be a wonderful name. Something for us all to be proud of and would honor a woman who was beyond her time. Thank you for your consideration and time. No comment, just want to vote for "Tillicum". I think naming the bridge after Ms. Duniway would be a great way to honor a true Oregonian hero, and it's long past time that a woman was given recognition from our Bridge City. My second choice would be Wy'East, as it is such a unique way to not only pay tribute to the original Oregonians, but to teach all who cross it a little about them. Cascadia bridge is my vote! The bridge should be Abigail! Cascadia is dull, and the other two are relatively abstract, whereas Ms. Duniway really ought to be commemorated. I vote for Tillicum. I think honoring our first peoples is always a good idea. The Duniway bridge would be my second vote. Wy'East. I would like to continue working in the education field and have a learning opportunity each time a child inquires about the name of the bridge. Young students learn about native American tales, and this one is quite entertaining. That there is a take about a landmark so personal to my students, will really reflect in their understanding and appreciation of native arts. I like that to an untrained ear, the name will sound similar to a knick name for west-east; I can see people of all ages wondering about the name, then subsequently learning about it. Cascadia Wy'east is my vote :-) Abigail Scott Duniway Transit Bridge. Are there any bridges in Portland, or Oregon, for that matter, named after a woman (if there are they are very few and far between). She is an important historical figure who did countless things for women's rights. She is a true hero! cascadia crossing. I like the Abigail Scott Duniway option though I do appreciate the attempt to honor native peoples with Tillicum and Wy'east I don't feel they fit. Tillicum because I feel it's a misuse of the word as it seems to commonly be defines as meaning friend. Wy'east is a question and frankly I don't have an answer for why you'd want to go East. Also the bridge looking like two mountains says to me it should be the Loo-wit/Wy'East bridge since Mt. Saint Helens & Mt. Hood are on opposite sides of Portland. I feel that if we wanted to honor native peoples by using Wy'east we'd be better served by reverting Mt. Hood to it's original name. This is an interesting assembly of final choices, and a bit of a tough decision to make, but I am in favor of Wy'east.

Comment The four finalists are BORING instead of CLEVER. The four finalists are to long and do not roll off my tongue like Portwaukie Bridge does : ) Tillicum Bridge Tillicum Crossing Transit Bridge would be the best!
