THE BRIDGES OF MINNEAPOLIS TOUR • Begin your tour at 1Washington Ave S and Marquette Ave S. • Take Washington Ave west to Hennepin Ave. • Turn right onto Hennepin Ave.

• Once on the 2Hennepin Ave Bridge, bike on the wide sidewalk. The bridge was built in 1991 and is one of the shortest operating suspension bridges in the USA.

[OPTIONAL SIDE TRIP] • Take the pedestrian ramp down on your right before you cross over the river. • At the bottom, cross the street and turn left onto the bike trail. • At Plymouth Ave, turn right and walk your bike (the bridge is closed to motor traffic through 2012). • Once across the river, take a right turn onto the trail/ walkway into 3 Boom Island Park.

• Follow the bike trail (carefully— it’s under construction) across the bridge to Nicollet Island. • The trail ends at East Island Ave: turn left and follow the street under the Hennepin Ave Bridge and turn left onto Merriam St to rejoin the main tour. [END OF SIDE TRIP] • Take your first right onto Wilder St and left onto Merriam St. The 4Merriam Street Bridge over the river’s back channel is a remnant of the original 1887 Broadway bridge across the main span of the Mississippi. • Once across the bridge, turn right onto the bike trail, and station your bike under the 53rd Ave Bridge (built 1890). Stop for a bite at one of the restaurants on Main St SE, and take a walk out into Water Power Park, where you can get up close to St. Anthony Falls.

• Continuing along Main St, follow bike trails and sometimes sidewalks to 6th Ave SE. • Turn right and cross the 6 Stone Arch Bridge. The bridge was bult in 1883 by James J. Hill for his Great Northern Railway, and provides great views of the falls and the boat lock. • At the end of the bridge, cut through the parking lot and turn left onto the bike trail on West River Parkway. • Turn right on Portland Ave and right on 2nd St S. • Turn right on 9th Ave S. • At the end of the block, turn left onto the sidewalk along Washington Ave and walk your bike to the Nice Ride station. If you want to take in the view from the 7 Guthrie Theater’s “Endless Bridge” walk back the way you came on 9th Ave and 2nd St, entering the Guthrie at the corner of Chicago Ave and 2nd St. When you are done, return to this station. • Walk your bike in the same direction on the Washington Ave sidewalk, and turn left on 10th Ave S.

• Turning right and immediately left, pass through Gold Medal Park to the 8 Remembrance Garden to the victims of the 2007 I-35W bridge collapse. • Continue east (right) on the path paralleling the West River Pkwy. Soon you’ll be passing under the new 9 I-35W bridge, which replaces the one that collapsed in 2007, killing 13 people (see 8). Next to the new bridge is the 19th Ave bridge. • Between the two bridges, turn right to cross West River Pkwy, then left to follow the bike trail uphill. • At the top of the hill, turn left onto the !º Northern Pacific #9 pedestrian bridge. • At the far end of the bridge, turn right onto East River Rd. • Turn left onto Arlington St, then right onto Pleasant Ave. • Follow signs to your left to access the !¡Washington Ave Bridge bikeway. Before you turn right to actually get on the bridge, station your bike at the Nice Ride station to your left. The lower level of this bridge is being converted into light rail and bus usage, but the top still gives a way for students to get between the East and the West Bank campuses of the University of Minnesota. • Turn left at the end of the bridge and follow the bike lane. You can station your bike in front of Wilson Library on your right. • Bear left when the bike lane splits. • Turn left (downhill) on 4th St S, and pick up the bike trail on the left when it starts. • At the bottom of the hill, turn left on the bike trail and go under the Washington Ave and Northern Pacific #9 Bridges. • Turn left at Portland Ave, then right on 2nd St S. Station your bike at 3rd Ave S, or return to Washington Ave and Marquette Ave S.
