ANZAC Memorial Weekend 17-19 June 2016

Brightlingsea Cricket Club is hosting a centenary weekend of remembrance for the 10,000 Australian and New Zealand troops who came to the town from 1916 onwards to prepare for battle on the fields of France and Belgium. Brightlingsea was a training ground for Army engineers and many of the troops were billeted on the Recreation Ground, where the cricket club moved to in 1893. There is an exhibition and champagne reception on Friday 17 June and carnival on Saturday 18 June, but on Sunday 19th June there is a memorial cricket match between Brightlingsea CC and Australia House CC, starting at 2pm. The match will be 30 overs per side and a strong Aussie side is expected to provide some exciting cricket. Brightlingsea will be strengthened by some guest players including one or two Kiwis to add a little more spice to the occasion. There will be a marquee hosting dignitaries and guests, with limited ticket availability at £25 per head for a carvery lunch and cream tea. There will also be a barbeque and bar open all day, so if you fancy a Father’s day out watching a game of cricket in friendly surroundings please come along. For more information and enquiries about tickets please contact Mick Barry on 07903137423.

has a proud history, being formed over one hundred and fifty years ago in 1860. The club originally played on Hurst Green before moving to the Recreation Ground in 1893. On 4 th July 1893 (American Independence Day) The US born philanthropist Mr Bayard Brown officially handed over the Recreation Ground to Mr Joseph Richardson, Deputy of the Cinque Port Liberty, as a gift to Brightlingsea residents. To mark the occasion the officers of the Liberty escorted Mr Bayard Brown in procession from the Hard to the Recreation Ground. After a short ceremony a cricket match was played between Brightlingsea and Harwich. There was a re-enactment of this match on the centenary of the event on 4th July 1993. The Recreation Ground is still the home of Brightlingsea Cricket Club to the present day, and it is pleased to welcome guests and friends to celebrate the Anzac memorial centenary on the ground where many Australians and New Zealanders were billeted during the first World War. The connection between the club and this heritage remains strong and will be marked by a memorial cricket match between the club and an Australian XI. This should be a competitive sporting contest between two proud allied nations who are both historical friends and traditional rivals.
