Jazz Plaza 2018!
(Havana's annual jazz festival) January 16 - 22, 2018 Havana, Cuba
The annual Jazz Plaza festival is Havana's most important celebration of jazz! It features plenty of Cuban musicians plus visitors from around the world. Last year's festival was hosted by Chucho Valdés and featured such luminaries as Omara Portuondo, Christian McBride, and Terence Blanchard. This year promises to be every bit as good...
DAYS 1-3 : The provinces
Sunday - Tuesday, January 14 - 16 Fly into Santa Clara, Cuba Spend three days experiencing major cities, coastal and rural areas of Cuba's interior. Besides our first looks at everyday life, we'll meet a number of musicians and learn about the island's rich musical heritage. This part of the trip will focus on genres other than jazz. Highlights: A group of rural musicians will introduce you to música campesina, Cuba's country music. Unlike country music in the U.S., this music is played and enjoyed almost exclusively in rural areas. Cubans are famously resourceful in facing scarcity and other hardships. A local luthier will show us the ingenious ways he invented to do his work without access to the supplies and tools he needs.
DAY 4: To Havana
Wednesday, January 17 Head to Havana! Jazz Plaza starts tomorrow, and tonight you'll enjoy the pre-festival celebration. Last year this was an evening of music in the historic Cathedral Square. While we're here, we'll spend time on music, but we'll also enjoy other aspects of Cuban culture, together with the nation's history and modern society.
DAYS 5-9: Havana
Thursday - Monday, January 18 - 22 Spend the next several days in different areas of Havana... and taking advantage of the Jazz Plaza festival's schedule of activities! From the colorful, historic streets of Old Havana to the gritty Centro Habana and tony neighborhoods of Miramar and Vedado, you'l get varied looks at the Cuban capital city. Attend the festival's inaugural gala, then choose from a variety of concerts at participating venues around town Enjoy private performances and meetings with local musicians
