Butler County, the largest county in Kansas, is east of Sedgwick County / Wichita, Kansas. Truly the crossroads of America with seven major highways. Augusta – Historic Augusta Theatre with elaborate art deco interior including ornamental plaster, canvas murals, and stenciled ceiling designed by Hans Van Voss from Holland. Built in 1935. The glass façade gave the Theatre a badge of distinction. Augusta – Kansas Museum of Military History - Preserving aviation and military history in a 16,500 square feet building and outdoors. Located on the south edge of town on Highway 77. Over 9,000 displays from miniature to huge. Donation Augusta – 1868 C.N. James Log Cabin adjacent to the historical museum 303 State Street. One of only two pioneer houses in the State of Kansas still on its original site. Donation Beaumont – The 1885 Frisco built wooden water tower The project won the “Kansas Preservation Alliance Award for Excellence” for efforts by three women to preserve the wooden tower. The tower was used during the steam locomotive era of Beaumont. Benton – Infinity Art Glass, the gallery of artist Scott Hartley, displays his unique hand blown works. A Glassblowing demonstration would be worth fitting in your timeframe. See Benton section for hours. Cassoday – If you want to know about railroads and cattle, you must visit this museum housed in the original Santa Fe Depot. Washington and Beaman streets. Contact for times. Douglass – The Pioneer Museum located on the downtown brick street of Douglass. Great for genealogy if you’re from that area. El Dorado – Downtown Streetscape with sculptures, old fashioned street lamps will take you back in time, planters, benches complete the district. Don’t miss the Flint Hills mural in Sculpture Alley just north of the Coutts museum. 570 colorful ceramic tiles make up this mural by artists Phil Epp and Terry Corbett. Pick up a sculpture walking tour brochure at the El Dorado Main Street office, 145 N. Main. El Dorado – If you are into art, you don’t want to miss the two stories of artwork displayed at the Coutts Museum of Art at 110 N Main. You’ll know it by the 2 iron horse sculptures adorning the entrance. Donation. There are also other art galleries for art lovers to view.

Andover – Order the “Best Burger in the world” from Timbuktu 1251 N. Andover Rd and head for one of the many parks. We recommend the 80 acre nature Central Park complete with walking paths 1607 E. Central. Andover – Browse through 29,000 square feet of quality memorabilia in the Antique Mall enjoyed by visitors from all 50 States and six foreign Countries. Augusta – In the Fall, take a visit back in time at the Yesteryear Fair or anytime at the Historical Museum. Augusta – Attend a movie in the Historic Theatre. You can’t beat the price and ambience. Beaumont – A drive to Beaumont is well worth your while to enjoy a meal at the historic hotel, view the wooden water tower across the road and wind farm just a few miles away. Benton – Attend a Scott Hartley’s glassblowing demonstration. His art is displayed in 100 galleries throughout the U.S. and in private collections around the world. Benton – If you like airplanes and food go to Stearman Field. Watch aircraft take off & land. Take a ride in a vintage open cockpit Bi-plane. Benton – Make arrangements to attend a musical evening along with a delicious Chuckwagon meal at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Ranch. Cassoday – Go the First Sunday of each month and take in the hundreds of motorcycles that have gathered. El Dorado – Watch the parade in November honoring our Veterans. Also visit the Freedom Memorial on the courthouse grounds. El Dorado – Fishing, skiing, boating, camping, swimming, hiking and other outdoor activities can all happen at the El Dorado Lake and State Park. Rent a rustic or deluxe full amenities cabin. You can also rent the large outdoor amphitheater for a concert, wedding or other super activity. El Dorado – Walk or bike on the outstanding Bike Trail or shop at District 142. Latham – A small town in the Southeast part of Butler County, it’s worth a drive on Saturday night to consume a hand cut steak at the Latham Saloon. Yum. Potwin – Attend the Watermelon Festival, enjoy dinner and then kick up your heels at the street dance. Daytime activities are also on the agenda. Rose Hill – This booming town is not lacking for celebrations. Take in their fabulous 4th of July Festival or their Fall Festival. Many, many fun activities for the family. Rose Hill – Add a visit to the museum to reminisce about the good ole days. Towanda – Visit the hometown of Miss Kansas 2006! You might want to consider this in October during their Craft Festival. Towanda – In the museum, see a model of the largest barn in the United States located in Butler County. Whitewater – Take your family to their fun filled Fall Festival. Bridge #1 - 60th St. Proceed south on Haverhill Rd, to 60th St., turn east (left) and go approximately one mile. This is one of two double arch bridges left in Butler County. Built in 1912 by C.C. Jamison. Arches are 20’ and 30’.
Bridge #2 - 90th St. Continue east on 60th to Walnut Valley Rd. Turn south (right) on Walnut Valley Rd. to 70th St. (next crossroads) and turn west (right). Bridge is approximately 1/2 mile. 25’ arch built in 1897 by A. Metheny. Continue west on 70th St. until you reach Ohio St. (second blacktop road) approximately 7 miles. Point of Origin: Augusta - Ohio Rd and 70th (N. of Augusta)
Bridge #3 - Diamond Rd. Begin or continue west on 70th St. approximately 2 miles until you reach Ohio Street Rd. (second blacktop road) approximately 7 miles. Continue west on 70th, approximately 2 miles to Diamond Rd. Turn south (left). Continue on Diamond Rd approximately 1 1/2 miles to Bridge. 37' arch, built in 1900.
Bridge #4 - 90th St. Continue south on Diamond Rd. to 90th St. (dead end) Turn east (left) about 1/2 mile to bridge. 36' arch, built in 1899 by Walter Sharp.
Bridge #5 - 230th St.
Continue on 90th St. to River Valley Rd. (next intersection), turn south (right) at old Lily Lake School and continue to Highway 54, approximately 1 mile. Turn west (right) on Highway 54 and continue approximately 6 miles to Andover Rd. Points of Origin: Andover Rd. & Hwy 54 or Rose Hill & Rose Hill Rd. Travel south on Andover/Rose Hill Rd. continuing through Rose Hill to 230th ST. Turn east (left) and continue 1 1/2 miles to Pole Cat Creek Bridge. 34' arch, built in 1910 by C.C. Jamison. Only stone arch bridge on Historical Register in Butler County.
Bridge #6 - 200 St.
Continue east on 230th St. to Meadowlark Rd., 1/2 mile, turn north (left) to 210th St. (blacktop), turn east (right) and continue into Douglass, KS (approximately 4 miles). Turn north (left) on Highway 77 to 200th St. (1 mile) turn east (right). Continue approximately 3 1/2 miles to the bridge. This bridge is a double arch reinforced concrete, listed on the National Register. 6

Bridge #7 - Gray Rd. off Hwy 400 Continue east on 200th St. to Cheyenne Rd. (approximately 1/2 mile) turn south (right) to go back to 210th St. Turn east (left) and continue to Haverhill Rd., turn north (left) on Haverhill Rd. and continue north to 54/400 Hwy. Turn east (right) on 54/400 Hwy. Point of Origin: Augusta - Hwy 54/400 & Haverhill Rd Traveling east on Hwy 54/400 continue to Gray Rd. (on top of railroad overpass and only goes north.) Turn north (left) and drive around stockpile of gravel to the south and approach railroad bridge. Old Frisco Railroad art deco reinforced concrete and metal. Built in 1935.
Bridge #8 - Summit Rd. Return to Highway 400 and turn east (left) and continue to Beaumont. Turn south (right) and go through Beaumont turning right at the water tower and continuing around the curves to 135th. Turn west (right) to Summit. Turn north (right) and bridge is a short distance. Return to Hwy 400 on the roads you came down. Turn west (left) on Hwy 400 to next bridge.
Bridge #9 - Satchel Creek Rd. On Highway 400 turn south (left) on Stony Creek Rd. Follow the road into the town of Latham. Turn west (right) on 200th St. and follow blacktop to Satchel Creek Rd. (cemetery on west side of intersection). Turn south (left) to bridge. 30' arch, built in 1901 by Walter Sharp.
Bridge #10 - 140th & Ellis Rd. intersection Return to 200th St. and turn west (left). Follow 200th St. It will bend and curve around and is about 6 miles to Cole Creek Rd. (You will be on 210th St. when you reach Cole Creek Rd. because of the twisting and turning). Turn north (right) and continue north to 140th St. (approximately 7 miles). Turn east (right) on 140th St. to Ellis Rd. Bridge is right of intersection. 40' arch, built in 1905. (Note arched roadway.) If only visiting #10. Point of Origin: Hwy 400 west of Leon Traveling east on Hwy 400, just south of Leon, turn south (right) on Chelsea Rd. (becomes Cole Creek Rd). Continue on Chelsea/Cole Creek Rd to 140th; turn left on 140th to Ellis Rd. After viewing Bridge #10, return on 140th to ColeCreek/Chelsea Rd. turn right to Hwy 400 and return home. DAY TOUR Destination El Dorado – Art and History El Dorado is about 30 miles east of Wichita This could be cut to ½ day by making certain selections. If a 2 day, see El Dorado section for list of motels. 8:00am – Pick up a sculpture brochure at the El Dorado Main Street office 145 N. Main. Cross the street for a light breakfast and latte at Scooter’s Coffeehouse, 142 N Main or drive one block to Susie’s, 124 S Main for a homemade breakfast. Try a cinnamon roll. 9:00am – Butler County History & Kansas Oil Museum –view the exhibits and walk the street of a 1920s Oil Boom Town. See an oil derrick and other oil equipment up close. See an authentic residence completely furnished as lived in during the oil boom. 10:00am - Drive downtown and park. Walk to either Coutts Museum of Art with a sculpture in front and on either side of the entrance OR continue on down the block of Main Street to Walter’s Flowers & Interiors 124 N. Main. Enjoy this beautiful shop and say “Hi” to owners Harold and Linda Harmon. Noon – Lunch choices: Fiesta Mexicana at 127 N. Main, Jacob’s Well at 139 N. Main or 142 N. Main for the Dilly Deli & a chocolate treat at Sweet 120 in the same building. While walking to lunch, view the sculptures on the street. After lunch, stroll down North Main Street viewing the sculptures. Visit Coutts Museum or Walter’s Flowers if not visited earlier. View the other sculptures on South Main Street and on West Central. 1/2 Day Tour, Day Tour or 2 Day Tour Andover – Benton – Towanda – Potwin – Whitewater Schedule a day when Scott Hartley of Infinity Art in Benton is glass blowing and/or your final destination is the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon. Begin in Andover with a visit to the Andover Antique Mall at 656 N. Andover Rd. for a truly quality shopping experience. Travel north on Butler/Andover Road to Hwy 254 and east to Benton (about 15 minutes). You’ll want to spend an hour for the glass blowing demonstration. If it’s lunch time, treat yourself to a stop at Stearman’s Bar & Grill at Benton Airport. Drive east to Towanda on Hwy 254 about 10 minutes and see this charming downtown and visit their museum. See Towanda section for times. Take a shortcut across the countryside north to Potwin. Visit the Library in the unique limestone building. Drive a short distance west on Hwy 196 for a delicious piece of pie at Mom’s Café in Whitewater. Take Butler Road between Whitewater and Potwin south cross country to the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon for an evening of food and entertainment. Reservations required. See Benton section.
Day Tour Through Southwest Butler County From Hwy 54, go south on Andover/Butler County Rd. to Rose Hill. Stop at the quaint 1880s home that’s now a museum. Continue to travel south to the road sign pointing to Douglass. Enjoy the countryside as you travel east to Douglass. In Douglass, check out the artifacts at the Pioneer Museum. You may want to call ahead 316-747-2166. You can return to your home or continue on north 77 to Augusta (see Augusta must see must do for stops to make).

Day Tour Augusta Art, History and Shopping This can be in conjunction to the Yesteryear Fair (call 316-775-5655 for dates) 9:00am Drive down the brick street to the Historical Museum 303 State and get a taste of what Augusta was like in the early years. You don’t want to miss the C.N. James Log Cabin adjacent to the museum. Drive around the corner to the Kansas Museum of Military History on the south edge of town on highway 77. You will be astounded by the awesome military artifacts. (Check Augusta listing for times.) Drive on State Street and park near the historic Theatre and view the glass façade and marquee with its neon lighting. Lunch: Drive to the Pizza Hut WingStreet or if it’s Mexican you want, Playa Azul has delicious food. A six and one-half foot bronze eagle, “Sovereign Wings,” is the centerpiece of the memorial. It rests majestically on top of a large limestone and brick base. A second memorial walk features the Statue of Liberty and our flag. One of the 8 Wonders of Butler County.
