Design, Optimization and Simulation of Parabolic Solar Thermal Power Plant (EthioSoLA) Abstract

Utilization of renewable energy resources is currently a global concern due to several reasons mainly connected to conventional fuels : 1) their combustion causes environmental pollution, 2) are being depleted at very fast rate from their natural reserve, and 3) continuous increase of their cost is becoming unaffordable by developing countries like Ethiopia. Solar energy is among the major clean and renewable energy resources available for all nations and specifically for those living near the equator. There are many technologies that convert solar energy in to readily usable form. Parabolic trough collector solar power plant, which this work focuses on, is the more matured one among these technologies. It can be feasible to be used in a country for large and small scale

applications. But before trying to install these power plants; design, optimization and feasibility study works, which are very tedious, should be performed. In order to simplify this work, Interactive simulation software has been developed by the authors. This will help designers, researchers, energy sectors and policy makers who are planning to do power prediction, optimization, feasibility study and implementation of these solar power

plants. The design of the software began from thorough understanding of the physics

governing conversion of energy from

solar radiation to electricity using the plant, sizing of plant components, code writing for solving the governing equations and designing an interactive Graphical User Interface (GUI) for easy communication with the software. Furthermore, it is a unique method of mapping and identifying conducive environmental localities that are suitable for implementation of solar energy. Over and above, this project is a unique means of sharing global responsibilities of mitigating causes of climate change.

Features of the software:  User friendly GUI  Predicting power output  Feasibility study  Optimization and sizing of power plant components, etc

About BA’ESSA Buno Alternative Energy System Solutions and Advisory (BA’ESSA) is an alternative energy engineering software development and consulting practice specialized in energy saving stoves, solar energy assessments, bio energy engineering, demand side audits and applying smart grid technology to energy transmission and distribution. BA’ESSA is founded in 2015, by two sustainable energy engineering professionals Mr. Derese Tekestebrihan and Dr.-Engineer. Getachew Shunki. BA’ESSA provides high quality energy engineering, software developing and consulting services to enable rapid deployment of efficient, cost-effective, reliable, and environment-friendly energy systems. Our customized technical solutions and services are provided to utilities, government agencies, policy makers, and corporations that seek to improve energy production, delivery, and enduse and renewable energy systems.

One of Our Main Service is Software Development for Alternative Energy System The founder of BA’ESSA believes that intelligent optimization and simulation software technology plays a key role in a competitive market and rapid development of Ethiopia. Intelligent software agents communicate with their users and each other, helping to expedite transactions on a variety of platforms. BA’ESSA wants to develop, a variety of custom software solutions that are widely used in energy efficiency, distributed generation, and renewable energy programs. BA’ESSA works closely with government agencies and clients to develop software solutions tailored to their specific program needs. BA’ESSA develops and maintains customized Java, Visual Basic, Android, Excel, and Access applications for use in the energy industry. These applications facilitate data entry, calculation, and viewing of energy use, cost, and savings associated with energy saving equipment and feasibility study.
