I wanted to set myself apart from other professionals within my peer group so that I could tackle something others could not... The knowledge that I gained on my course enabled me to take up the challenge and start my own business. I now run my own successful consultancy. Without the skills learnt on the course, it would have taken longer to develop to the level that I have now achieved. Barry Holdsworth, horticultural consultant, Barry Holdsworth Ltd Management MA

A postgraduate course from Kingston Business School can help you...

Gain promotion On graduating with my MBA, I was promoted and asked to work in an internal management consultancy with senior police officers and members of the Home Office, which would not have been possible without the MBA. Having gained an increased interest in business techniques through my consultancy role, I decided to read for a doctorate. During the course of my research, I retired from the police service and used my business knowledge to set up my own consultancy and training company in Austria. Dr Reg Butterfield, MBA, PhD (at Kingston University) MD, Management Resource Centre, Vienna

Flexible study We aim to provide you with a programme that suits your lifestyle and fits around your work and life commitments. Our courses are designed to allow maximum flexibility by offering you part-time options and the opportunity to complement and reinforce your study with learning in the workplace. You could also consider our Masters by Learning Agreement, a work-based programme that enables you to tailor your studies to your business needs.

Full time or part time? The study commitment varies depending on which course you take, with many of our courses available for part-time evening or afternoon/evening study, and some on an open-learning weekend attendance basis. To find out which courses are offered in parttime mode, please see page 28. Online resources Online study is a key element of many of our courses, and you will have access to StudySpace, the University’s online learning tool. StudySpace gives you access to learning and teaching resources, multimedia material, discussion boards, wikis and blogs, as well as providing the ability to create your own profile, networks and groups. You can use this environment to study where you want, when you want, from any internet-enabled computer, and also from your smartphone.

Work-based learning programme The working environment holds many learning opportunities. Our work-based learning programme provides the opportunity for professionals to gain academic recognition for learning gained at work. Our flexible ‘learning agreement’ framework enables you to tailor the programme around your work and organisation. It aims to make sure that the knowledge you gain is relevant to both your individual and organisation’s needs. You earn academic credit through recognition of the learning involved in completing work-based projects, and you will gain a qualification for the contribution you make to your organisation’s success.

The course was a challenge, especially when trying to juggle study with a full-time job and an active social life, and still find time to run and swim. But I found that an organised approach to handling the workloads and sharing ideas at regular meetings with my study group got me through – I even managed to keep to my evening exercise schedule, which helped me to clear my head. Frances Wilson, Human Resource Management PgDip HR adviser, human resources department, Invensys Controls

Programmes available for work-based learning? • Business & Management Practice • Organisational Learning & Development • Career & Talent Management • Innovation & Entrepreneurship • Leadership Practice • Project Management Practice • Quality Leadership Practice • HRM Practice • Marketing Practice & Management • Consultancy Practice • Quality Leadership Practice For details, please see our website: www.kingston.ac.uk/businesswbl

The overall experience of the degree programme was both enjoyable and valuable. It broadened my awareness and understanding of the issues that I was experiencing in the workplace. David Horn, Business & Management Practice work-based learning masters

Expert teaching At Kingston University, you’ll be taught by a combination of academics and practitioners, many of whom are acknowledged experts in their field. Increasing numbers of staff are also engaged in research, meaning that new and influential ideas are reflected in our teaching.

Who will teach you? Many of our committed and enthusiastic staff are active in professional practice as well as being leading academics. In addition, Kingston Business School has a growing number of thriving research centres, with an increasing number of our staff actively engaged in research, publishing their findings and presenting them at international conferences, and sharing their in-depth knowledge through teaching. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the Business School’s research output was very highly rated (see page 26).

I found the curriculum and learning to be of very high quality with a good focus on practical application, such as the use of case studies based on recent issues or events. This was all quantified by guest speakers from various different industries. Mo Karim, Human Resource Management masters UK employee relations and industrial relations adviser at Royal Dutch Shell

Staff in the Business School have a very high level of engagement with their respective industry organisations, such as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply. Some staff also undertake secondments to industry and government. To ensure that we keep you up to date with the latest industry developments, we have also established links with the business institutions of central London, as well as in the wider community of south-west London and beyond (see page 16). In addition, we collaborate with international partners who provide our courses overseas to meet the needs of the global community. Examples of teaching expertise: • Dr Debbie Anderson has been awarded a coveted National Teaching Fellowship as a result of her industry-based teaching approach. • Professor Richard Ennals has worked with students to create Student Quality Circles, where groups of students take ownership of practical problem-solving processes – this involves challenging current arrangements for learning and teaching.

How will we teach you? Our academics research not only what we teach, but also how we teach: • Vladlena Benson and Stephanie Morgan have published their book Cutting-Edge Technologies and Social Media Use in Higher Education. Vladlena also has published more than 30 research articles in the area of e-learning and social media. • Barry Avery has carried out research into the use of technology-enhanced learning with assessment. Our teaching is interactive and collaborative, encouraging debate between staff and students. Teaching is by a combination of classroom sessions, workshops and seminars. We place an emphasis on working in groups, and many of our courses offer practical components that enable you to test out the theory. Examples: • Students on many of our full-time courses work with an external organisation and, through a real project, develop the personal, planning and problem-solving skills needed to perform the consultancy task. Using key consultancy tools and techniques, students look at how to plan, monitor and manage projects, evaluate briefs and assess consultancy proposals. • The Strategic Marketing MSc culminates in a research dissertation project that can be used to tackle one of the key marketing challenges of the student’s employer. • Students on the Kingston MBA and International Business Management MSc take part in an online business simulation game, competing against their classmates and students from around the world.

This mix of backgrounds, combined with varied nationalities represented by staff, enriches groupwork and adds a unique dimension to the learning environment. International collaborations Part of our strategy is to extend our international footprint through collaborations with high-quality international partners. We currently have partnerships in Hong Kong, Mumbai, Moscow, Oslo, Singapore, Shanghai and Bangkok. Discussions are taking place with more potential partners in Austria, France, Germany, India, Nigeria, Dubai and Malaysia. These collaborations enable students to gain an international perspective from lectures given by visiting academics, as well as potential study exchanges. Studying overseas As part of your course, you may have the opportunity to participate in international trips. For example: • MBA and International HRM students have the opportunity to visit our partner institution in Moscow, for lectures and networking events, where both courses are also taught (the MBA being ranked as Russia’s best for three years running).

My class was very united, and we still keep in touch socially and professionally. There were people from all over the world on the course, which enriches the opportunities to access information, support and mutual co-operation. The course helped me by giving me the knowledge, skills and self-confidence to start planning, researching and making business connections so as to carry out the business I have in mind. Yolotzin Ocampo, Logistics & Supply Chain Management MSc General manager, Kinepa (Mexico)

While studying at Kingston, I met people from different countries, such as Italy, France, China, Japan, India, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, America and Thailand, to name a few – I am still in touch with most of them. I would recommend my course to any student, whether local or international, because you can learn a lot of things like finance, marketing, operations and entrepreneurship; and the fact that the course uses examples from different countries around the world helps a lot.

A highlight of the MBA trip to Moscow was learning and interacting with the Russian students. The assignment work for the Global Business elective was a good learning experience. Part one was a group assignment by a mix of students from Russia and London, and gave all an opportunity to work and interact with people from diverse cultures, attitudes and mindsets. It was an important lesson in challenges encountered when working with people of different mindsets in a big group.

This course takes a ‘theory into practice’ approach, with an emphasis on the practical skills that are essential for the modern international business manager specialising in supply-chain and logistics management. With accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), and a solid syllabus built on concepts and ideas from the University’s renowned Operations Research Group (ORG), the course offers both an academic and a professional qualification.

Take your career to the next level with our Management PgDip/ MA. Recognised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), these routes comprise a range of modules that will enhance your skills and qualities as a manager in all sectors of the economy – whether you are in local government, healthcare or private-sector companies, such as retail, IT or finance. If you already have a relevant PgDip, you can choose to top up your qualification to an MA. The courses are delivered over weekends to fit around your working week.

What will you study? In the first semester you will develop a broad understanding of management concepts, theories and ideas, such as how to manage organisations and supply chains. This will provide you with a solid foundation, from both strategic and operational perspectives. In the second semester, and through your dissertation, you will put this knowledge to use – through practical application to real situations; for example, through company visits, which students often arrange for themselves. These opportunities to engage with real supplychain managers will build your confidence and ability to question established practice.

What will you study? Study weekends are very interactive, and include case studies, group exercises and new technologies to ensure that you engage with the topics and can apply theory to real practice. You will develop your evaluation and analytical skills, focusing on the application of management techniques, and will gain a strategic and holistic perspective of your organisation that is critical to its success in today’s competitive environment. Where possible, we link the theories to your own examples from work, incorporating information and datasets from your organisation to work through as a live example – also providing a useful benefit for your employer.

Creative industries and the creative economy From advertising to film, fashion to fine art, music to publishing, and communication design to creative writing, the creative industries are fast outpacing traditional industries both in the UK and the rest of the world. They contributed 5.2 per cent of the UK’s Gross Value Added (GVA) in 2012, and creative employment is estimated at 1.68million jobs (source: Department for Culture Media and Sport, 2014). Turning ideas into innovative processes and products, and developing them successfully, requires a fusion of creative, managerial and entrepreneurship skills. The unique characteristic of the Creative Industries & the Creative Economy programme is that it comprises a portfolio of 11 specialist courses that combine business/ management and entrepreneurship modules with the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a specific creative industry. The courses encourage high levels of creativity, networking and ‘learning by doing’. You will engage fully in collaborative and multidisciplinary teamwork, and should also be prepared to respond to industry-generated projects.

The programme will introduce you to new ways of approaching problems and gaining insights on how best to create solutions, and will develop your entrepreneurial, management and networking skills to a level where you can connect creativity and business in a successful and meaningful way. We like to think of these MAs as a boot camp for your ideas and talent! What will you study? You can choose from 11 different specialisms, all of which share the same core modules. All the routes are structured in three phases, with each course providing a challenging and active learning environment. The first phase is very practical, working with a multidisciplinary team to develop your own creative enterprise project. The second phase enables you to focus on your chosen creative industry specialism. The final phase brings your business and creative modules together through your personal research project. Once you have started thinking creatively about solving problems, you and your team members will design, test, launch and finally market your product/service. If you would like to become an occupational or business psychologist, studying and analysing employees, identifying talent and then coaching, developing and enhancing their motivation and performance at work, this course, which is accredited by the Association of Business Psychologists (ABP) and the British Psychological Society (BPS), is ideal. These skills are increasingly important for organisations and the variety of consulting and human resource management practices that serve them, eg occupational psychology consultancies or test publishers, and in talent management consultancies or recruitment companies.

This course is designed to provide lawyers, HR professionals and those with management or administrative roles with a detailed knowledge and understanding of employment law in the context of both UK and EU developments. It will also provide an opportunity to critically evaluate mediation as a means of dispute resolution and to develop competence in practical mediator skills and techniques. Throughout the programme, there is an emphasis on the application of skills and knowledge to work-based contexts and constraints.

What will you study? You will investigate various approaches to applying psychological principles in the workplace, and how these ideas can increase organisational, team and individual performance. You will then apply these theories and evidence to case studies, examples from the field and real-life practice – either at your own company or during a short internship. Assessment Coursework assignments, group and individual exercises, online discussions, skills sessions, data analysis assignment, dissertation Examples of modules Career Counselling, Training and Development; Leadership, Change and Consultancy; Performance Appraisal and Identifying Talent; Wellbeing at Work; Research Methods and Dissertation Key features • This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society and the Association of Business Psychologists. If you have studied a BPS-accredited psychology degree and have GBC, it represents the first stage in your route to chartership and registration as a psychologist. If you don’t have GBC, this can be gained after the course, if required (ie by undertaking a conversion diploma) – this MSc will constitute stage 1 in the process to chartership. • There is a major focus on integration of theory and practice, and most academic staff work in practice, ensuring the course is relevant and grounded in real-life context. • Employability is also central to the course. Psychometric tests help you focus on the skills you need for your personal career aspirations. You will also have access to a qualified career coach. • You will benefit from attending lectures given by guest speakers from a range of organisations, including major test publishers and business psychology consultancies, who visit the University to share their knowledge and experience.

What will you study? You will evaluate the methods for resolving workplace conflicts and will gain practical knowledge of mediation. You will explore the formation, content and day-to-day operation of the employment relationship and how the law intervenes in these areas. You will focus on recent developments in equality and discrimination law that have made significant changes to law and practice in the employment relationship from the point of recruitment to post-employment discrimination and victimisation. Conflict resolution and mediation skills are increasingly in demand for workplace disputes, and the assessment will require you to prepare and conduct a range of mediations, evaluating your performance as a mediator. Assessment Individual and group exercises, case studies, written reports Examples of modules Mediation; Employment Law in Context Key features • This course is taught part time and designed to fit around the needs of busy professionals. Contact time is just one Saturday per month. • Teaching on this course is delivered by top Law School staff, seven of whom are accredited mediators. • On completion of this course, you have the option to top up to a masters in law (LLM) in employment law by completing two additional modules and a dissertation.

[It] will enable students to develop the practical mediation skills required to resolve workplace conflict at an early stage and provide them with a level of comfort in dealing with difficult conversations. These skills are now key requirements of effective practice for managers.” Ralph Tribe, HR director Sky

During my course I was fortunate to secure an internship at the Fifth Business – a global change communications agency. What I liked the most in this internship was the great opportunity of seeing some of the theories I have studied during my course be applied in real life. For instance, I was asked to create an internal communications plan to be implemented within Fifth Business’s London office and was also involved with the creation of their social media strategy. I can definitely say that this internship helped me to see how and where to apply some of the key theories I studied in Kingston. Karine Porto, Corporate Communications MA, communications specialist
