Introduction RETURN TO CONTENTS
English language teaching, learning and assessment – an integrated approach As world leaders in language assessment, we provide a comprehensive range of assessments that are recognised for work and study purposes. For many learners these lead to enhanced life experiences, as we are able to provide trusted and reliable proof of their achievements. Our mission, however, extends far beyond the provision of assessment and encompasses the wider educational and social impact of language learning. Around the world, we advise governments, regional education authorities and schools on setting the right levels of language ability for their needs. We also assist with curriculum development and design to establish a route for teachers to follow that will bring learners up to the required level of English. As good teaching is so crucial for good learning, we have a complete suite of teaching qualifications that help people both enter the English language teaching profession and progress their careers. In 2011 we have widened access to CELTA, our initial teacher training qualification, by introducing the Cambridge CELTA Course Online. This catalogue reflects our integrated and cohesive approach to language teaching, learning and assessment. In it you will find a comprehensive range of examinations, support and preparation products which cover all areas of language learning, from placement testing to teaching and assessment. Our range of exams and materials that support them have grown. New additions to this edition of the catalogue include: • the new certificated version of BULATS which is accepted for applying for work and study visas in the UK • the Cambridge English Placement Test, a quick and reliable tool to help schools identify the existing English ability of new students • online courses and practice tests. Together with Cambridge University Press, we have created a new team: Cambridge Exams Publishing. This brings together our joint expertise in language assessment and educational publishing to provide you with a wealth of official preparation materials. The catalogue now reflects an extensive range of coursebooks, practice tests, preparation courses and other resources from both our organisations that will help people prepare for Cambridge English examinations.

Results
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a series of descriptions of language abilities which can be used to set clear targets for achievement in language learning. It has now become accepted all over the world as a way of benchmarking language ability.
Cambridge ESOL is committed to providing candidates with accurate, informative results as quickly as possible after they take their exam or test. In many cases – including all computer-based exams – results are issued within two weeks of the test date, and we are continually working to provide results quickly for all exams, without compromising the extensive assessment and quality control processes that ensure fairness and reliability. Candidates’ results give a breakdown of their performance in each of the four skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Cambridge English exams are developed in accordance with the principles and approaches of the CEFR. To learn more go to www.CambridgeESOL.org/CEFR

We know it is important to recognise candidates’ achievement. Most Cambridge English exams are targeted at a specific CEFR level. Candidates demonstrating ability above the target CEFR level will receive a certificate showing that they have achieved a higher CEFR level. Candidates who do not achieve the target CEFR level but demonstrate ability at the level below, will receive a certificate showing their achievement at that level. The example below, using Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), which is targeted at CEFR Level C1, shows how this works. Cambridge English: Advanced – Level C2 Grade A Exceptional candidates sometimes show ability beyond C1 level. If a candidate achieves a grade A in their exam, they receive a Cambridge English: Advanced certificate stating they demonstrated ability at Level C2.

TKT Teaching Knowledge Test Specialist modules To extend the range of knowledge offered under the umbrella of TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test), a flexible set of specialist modules has been created. There are three specialist TKT modules. TKT modules can be taken all together at the same time or separately, in any order, over a period of time.
TKT: CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) This module tests the knowledge of concepts related to content and language integrated learning. TKT: CLIL describes an evolving approach to teaching where subjects are taught and studied through the medium of a non-native language. In TKT: CLIL learning a second or foreign language and learning a curricular subject are given a joint role; for example, a non-native speaker learning geography in English. TKT: CLIL tests knowledge about content teaching in a second language and the learning, thinking and language skills which are developed across different curriculum subjects. It tests knowledge of how to plan lessons as well as knowledge of activities and resources used to support a CLIL approach. It also tests knowledge of teaching strategies and how assessment is carried out in CLIL contexts.

It is suitable for international candidates teaching across the primary sector of education. Candidates taking the test may have some experience of teaching English to young learners and will be familiar with the language of teaching as represented in the TKT Glossary.

IELTS Blended or 100% Online Courses Preparation Materials
IELTS Online Courses provide authentic and practical practice for test takers. Cambridge ESOL, one of the IELTS partners, has developed two blended learning courses and two selfstudy 100% online courses to help prepare candidates for the IELTS test. Flexibility is a key element of the IELTS Academic Blended Learning Courses. Tuition providers can adjust the mix of online and classroom study according 70
to the needs of learners. The courses have been designed so that higher band learners usually receive less classroom support and more online study than lower band learners. All courses are of 100-hour duration and organised into four modules: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The self-study modules can be bought and used individually. The IELTS Self-study Course is ideal for people with busy lives who find it hard to make time for classroom study. The online courses are flexible, letting learners study what they want, when they want. Available titles • IELTS Academic Blended Learning Course (Bands 4.5–5.5) – 50%–60% online, 40%–50% classroom • IELTS Academic Blended Learning Course (Bands 6.0–7.5) – 60%–75% online, 25%–40% classroom • IELTS Academic Self-study Course (Bands 4.5–7.5) – 100% online • IELTS Academic Self-study Course Reading Module – 100% online • IELTS Academic Self-study Course Writing Module – 100% online • IELTS Academic Self-study Course Listening Module – 100% online • IELTS Academic Self-study Course Speaking Module – 100% online • IELTS General Training Self-study Course (Bands 4.5–7.5) – 100% online • IELTS General Training Self-study Course Reading Module – 100% online • IELTS General Training Self-study Course Writing Module – 100% online • IELTS General Training Self-study Course Listening Module – 100% online • IELTS General Training Self-study Course Speaking Module – 100% online Visit the website to: • watch the video demonstration • request a free trial. www.ielts-preparation.org
