POSITION SUMMARY As a function of Facilities Services, Campus Security is responsible for personal and physical safety and security and for coordinating Emergency Management activities for the College. Coordination and collaboration with the other components of Facilities Services, as well as all other College schools, departments and offices is essential to maintain a high degree of security under normal and emergency situations. The Campus Security Specialist is a member of the Campus Security team responsible for the day-to-day security activities and emergency management to ensure a safe, supportive environment for students, staff and faculty to work and study. In addition to primary response for personal safety and property security incidents, the Campus Security Specialist investigates issues of student and staff conduct making recommendations to the Manager of Campus Security for appropriate sanctions, assists in maintaining both Camosun’s Emergency Management Program, and the electronic security systems. The Campus Security Specialist reports to the Manager of Campus Security.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Establishes trust and cultivates a positive presence on assigned campus, becoming the on-site subject matter expert on crime prevention and security related issues; Provides primary response to issues of public safety, personal, and physical security; Investigates incidents related to the Criminal Code of Canada, Federal and Provincial Statutes, College polices, security, student conduct and confidential matters; ensuring that best practice investigation techniques and resources are utilized. These techniques will include interviewing witnesses, victims, suspects, and relevant parties; Interprets and applies legislation, community policing concepts, and Camosun College policies and procedures when receiving and responding to complaints from the campus community and the general public; Regularly patrols the campus, buildings and grounds to ensure compliance with college policies, procedures and guidelines; Operates all campus security electronic security systems including: intrusion alarm systems, CCTV, and access control; Assists the Manager of Campus Security with the College’s Emergency Management Program through continued training of staff, conducting drills, and revising plans; Assists the Manager of Campus Security in determining and planning of personnel and deployment in the event of an emergency and/or disaster; Collaborates with the Manager of Campus Security, faculty, staff, and students to develop, implement, and maintain security services that are effective and responsive to the campus community's needs and are in keeping with Camosun College's mission and goals; Collaborates with the Manager of Campus Security to develop strategies for Exempt Position Vacancy – A16-11 Campus Security Specialist.docx P 250.370.3004 Camosun College Human Resources

reducing crime and enhancing public safety and security. This involves the promotion of community policing, educational programs, and preventative measures; Conducts Hazard, Risk and Vulnerability Assessments (HRVA), and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) assessments on Camosun College facilities; Oversees on site contractors and actions any items requiring follow up on behalf Liaises with College departments and resources to promote strong working relationships and coordinate plans and responses to security related issues; Liaises with external agencies, committees, groups, and other off-campus agencies on crime prevention, and security related issues; Provides advice, consultation, information, and training to faculty, staff, and students with respect to public safety and security matters of Camosun College; Provides technical assistance by troubleshooting problems, proposing solutions with vendors, calling for service, and maintenance of all campus security electronic security systems; Monitors and maintains records management for quality assurance and confidentiality of all Campus Security reports and compliance with statutory requirements for security of personal records and investigative reports; Prepares reports and maintains electronic, manual record, statistics and graphical systems; As required, represents the College and Department on various internal and external committees; Assists in coordinating Safer Campus initiatives; Acts as the Manager, Campus Security in his/her absence and/or as directed; Participates in relevant Professional associations and meetings; Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Strong competence with Microsoft Office applications.
QUALIFICATIONS Undergraduate degree in a relevant field, such as criminology, justice, emergency management, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience; Must hold, or obtain within 6 months of employment, Province of British Columbia Security Worker License with Private Investigator and Security Guard Endorsements; 3 years’ related experience including conducting investigations, and the enforcement of statutes; 3 years’ related experience working with electronic security systems, such as access control, CCTV and intrusion alarms systems; Recent experience instructing personal safety or other security related programs; Recent experience conducting risk assessments (HRVA, CPTED etc).
