CANDY AND BEANIE BABIES SAVE AMERICAN TROOPS LIVES
Who would have guessed that sending a care package through Operation Gratitude to our troops overseas would literally saves lives. Carolyn Blashek founder and head of Operation Gratitude has received letters thanking her for the gift boxes. These gifts turned out to save lives. Soldiers tell stories how when they shared their candy and beanie babies with the local children, the children shared the location of field mines, bombs and where the bad guys lived. This shared kindness saved countless lives. Carolyn started this program six years ago. She just wanted to let the troops know that they were remembered and were appreciated. In support of Operation Gratitude, Dr. Allyson Hurley, Chatham dentist, participated in the collection of candy and beanie babies this past Halloween, and in turn, she exchanged $1.00 for every pound of candy collected from families. In total, 1,500 pounds of candy and 1,000 beanie babies have been donated so far. Although the candy for cash exchange has ended, Dr. Hurley is still accepting candy and beanie baby donations, as well as letters to the troops until Monday, November 23rd. Be sure to drop of your donations at Dr. Allyson Hurley’s office at 585 Main Street, Chatham, NJ. If you have any questions or need directions, call 973-635-0698 or visit our website at www.allysonhurley.com. Operation Gratitude recommends that letters be written to the troops. The troops love receiving letters from home. Carolyn suggests the following protocol: What to write about Keep your message upbeat and positive Be thankful – share a little bit of yourself Do not discuss death or killing Thank them for service It’s all about appreciation and respect More helpful information Sample salutations: Dear Hero, Dear Brave One Include your own mail or email so recipients can choose to reply No stamps or envelopes are needed Hand written letters or cards are most appreciated No glitter please All letters will be screened – please do not seal Envelopes If you do not receive a reply for a Service Member, do not be discouraged.
