Your guide to getting hired on the spot / Cardiff City Hall / 2018.

Welcome to the biggest event of the summer camp calendar. Meet directors, find your job and get your summer sorted. Right here, right now.

Our top 10 tips. Use this guide. Talk to lots of directors, the more the merrier. Join the queue that’s right for you (size doesn’t matter) Keep your mind open. If you’re not placed yet then keep calm and carry on.

Stay hydrated. Smile - You’re never fully dressed without one. If camps have your skill, go speak to them. Enter the TrekAmerica prize giveaway. Enjoy the day.

Information checkpoint. If you need any help, we’re on hand. Look for the information check point in the room with the Directors or grab anyone dressed in a fetching staff t-shirt.

What can I do to stand out? The majority of hires are made on personality. If the camp director likes you, they’ll try hard to find a spot for you at their summer camp (even if they weren’t originally looking for it). Make sure you speak up, show your enthusiasm and plaster a huge smile on that wonderful face. Camp directors are here to meet you. They want you at their camp, so give them every reason to say yes.

I’m placed, what happens next? If you’re placed then start celebrating! Do your victory dance, update your status and call your Mum on speakerphone like the X factor. You’re going to camp. Once done, take your yellow placement form to the placed desk so the team can officially add your new camp to your profile. Don’t leave without doing it!

Keep up to date throughout the day via social. Search Camp Leaders.

Choose the queue that’s right for you. Camps will each have their own criteria, so keep your eyes on the camp boards for where you should be standing, don’t be British and just join a queue. The line length is never an indicator of positions going or how great that camp is. A little secret… they’re all great, that’s why they’re here.

Use the live job boards. Camps will be updating their boards at their stations. This will be the most up-to-date information from each camp. If the camp is advertising your skill, then you need to be speaking with them. The boards will chop and change so keep your mind open and be ready to speak to everyone.

What do I do if I’m not placed? Last year we placed 100% of people on the program but only a quarter of those were placed at the fair. (Interesting huh.) If today wasn’t your moment, then the journey isn’t over, go see the US team at the ‘on review’ desk. The team will look at your application with you, give tips and advice while looking at which camp would suit you.
