EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO BE GAME CHANGERS OF THE FUTURE Technology is reshaping the way we live, learn and work at an unprecedented pace. As a student, this is both exciting and daunting. The unknown future brings hundreds of possibilities and opportunities all theirs for the taking. Simultaneously, technology is accelerating external factors such as globalisation, which is intensifying competition by tearing down boundaries between markets. Therefore, to thrive in an interconnected and rapidly evolving world, it is imperative that students adequately equip themselves with the right knowledge and skills that can help them navigate through this uncertain and challenging future. That is why at INTI we have taken the lead to champion a whole new way of learning that extends beyond the classroom, to prepare students to excel in whatever future they choose. For 30 years we have been at the forefront of education innovation, providing students with the most international, innovative and individualised learning experience - the INTI Edge – to empower them to become tomorrow’s game changers. We take them on a journey that focuses on academic excellence, and at the same time imbues them with 21st Century skills - critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity – as well as sound ethical foundations, all of which are crucial for their future careers. Thanks to our strong relationship with over 400 industry partners, we are able to provide vital hands-on experience to students, so that they can

understand the challenges that corporations face today, align themselves with employers’ expectations and be industry-ready when they graduate. This year our students have participated in 133 employer projects, more than double the number of projects from the previous year. As a result of our unyielding focus in producing outstanding graduate outcomes, we are proud to share that 97% of our graduates were employed within 6 months of their graduation and 16% were offered jobs even before they completed their studies at INTI. In the next few pages, you will be introduced to some of INTI’s star alumni, whose achievements we are extremely proud of. While their success comes in many forms, these individuals share many similar admirable qualities, such as integrity, tenacity, passion and self-confidence. These traits, coupled with the solid foundation of knowledge and skills that they gained during their youth, have empowered them to realise their dreams. These remarkable individuals are just some examples of the 50,000 graduates whose lives we have touched in the last three decades. It is our promise that we will continue to be a force of change and revolutionise education in Malaysia, to bring about exceptional student outcomes by inspiring more students to explore their passion and discover their true potential.

LAU SENG YEE passing an academic examination. Taking the class was probably one of the best decisions I made during my formative years, as it opened a gateway which led to unlimited possibilities. It helped me to break into the advertising business where English is the lingua franca. It continues to be a valuable asset when I deliver public speeches at media events, as well as in universities and business schools.

“ I chose to study at INTI because the college principal, Mr. Tan Yew Sing, convinced me that it was the key to my future. It is still a vivid memory – Mr. Tan came to the classroom to welcome us and advised us about the importance of the English Language for our potential careers. His words left a deep impact on me, and I was convinced that the significance of the English Language went beyond just

After 20 years of helming global advertising giants such as Dentsu Young & Rubicam, McCann Erickson, Publicis (Managing Director for China), BBDO (CEO for China), I joined Tencent in 2006. With video streaming services, Internet access, a news portal, a micro blogging platform and related services, Tencent is now changing the way people utilise media in China. Tencent is now China’s leading Internet portal, Tencent News is China’s No. 1 smartphone news platform based on daily active users, and Tencent Video has the highest monthly unique views on PCs. These days I spend most of my time innovating Tencent Media to become the new industry benchmark in China. I also spend some time coaching my senior team to focus on creating a better user experience for our key products, such as Tencent Online Video and Tencent News. Deals alone won’t make you successful because they only represent what you do. Success should also not be measured in monetary terms. It’s who you are that makes you successful. For me, being successful is about achieving meaningful things in life, doing a great job of everything that I undertake, as well as being accepted and acknowledged by the public.

2) Open minded As a newcomer, you are expected to accept, adapt and apply quickly. The only way for you to do this is to break out of your comfort zone. Being a good listener helps too, as being there for others is the best way to make new friends, gain new experiences and learn new things. 3) Curious How do you thrive in a world that is disrupted by technology? Start by training yourself to be more curious. Learn new things every day. Most importantly, learn the language of coding regardless of your academic background, as coding is the new lingua franca of the Information Age. ”

NG CHEONG CHOON After graduating from Wichita State University, I secured a job as a crash-test engineer in Detroit’s motor industry. The inspiration for Rainbow Loom came from my childhood. I loved my job, but regretted being too busy to spend time with my two daughters. One night after work, I saw them making bracelets from rubber bands.

Ng bought rubber bands weighing over 2,000lb from China to start his business.

Growing up in Taiping, we were too poor to buy toys so we made our own - I made skipping ropes from rubber bands. Using the same technique, I showed them how to link the rubber bands together.

“ I’ve always wanted to be an engineer and chose to attend INTI because of its global connections. The courses offered through the American Degree Transfer Program could be transferred to numerous universities in the United States, which was a great start. After I completed my course at INTI, I proceeded to study Mechanical Engineering at Wichita State University. I still remember how I felt when I first landed in Kansas – it was a snowy day in the Spring of 1991 and I had never seen snow before. I remember thinking: I am halfway around the globe; if I scream, nobody will hear!

Ng with his wife and two daughters who were the inspirations for his globally renowned product.

So, I came up with an innovative way of marketing the product: I asked my daughters and niece to create YouTube videos explaining how to make rubberband bracelets. It worked so well that soon enough, the Rainbow Loom kits were completely sold out in some cities! Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I’ve learnt one important lesson again and again: failure will always be part of the game. The key is to learn from your experiences and do better the next time. My idea of success is being able to deliver positive experiences to my customers, so I get a buzz every time people tell me how much they love the Rainbow Loom! The most surreal moment was seeing pictures of the royal family and Pope Francis wearing my invention. I thought to myself: “Wow, that started from our dining room table!” My advice to students: the world is your oyster. Your diverse experiences in various cultures and languages give you an edge that can help you make it anywhere in the working world. ”

One day, my daughters took a bunch of colourful bracelets to school. They became so popular that my older daughter, Teresa, suggested selling them. What seemed like an overnight success was actually fraught with challenges. For example, when I initially pitched my invention to toy stores in Michigan, there were very few takers. The problem wasn’t the product, but that no one understood what it could do.

TAN KEE HIAN

Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I’ve learnt one important lesson again and again: failure will always be part of the game. The key is to learn from your experiences and do better the next time.

Having developed his trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Tan is currently the CEO of the Malaysian National Basketball League.

Tan Kee Hian is the CEO of the NBL Asia, an organisation that aims to nurture future professional sports athletes in Malaysia.

“ What I learnt at INTI created a solid foundation of knowledge that allowed me to further my studies in a subject that I was passionate about - Sports Management - at Indiana State University, USA. I have always loved sports, especially basketball. Before studying in the USA, I was a national basketball player and played in a number of major basketball tournaments, including the Agong’s Cup National Basketball Championships, the Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) Games, the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the Asian Basketball Championships.

Upon graduation, my love for basketball and my qualifications landed me a job with the Cleveland Cavaliers, also known as the Cavs, an NBA basketball team in Ohio, USA. After two years of working with the Cavs, where I worked on a variety of roles including event management, public relations, marketing, publicity and promotions, I returned to Malaysia and started my own sports marketing and event management company - Keysports Promotion Sdn Bhd. soon be entering the workforce: have realistic expectations about your future career. It is highly likely that you won’t land your ‘perfect’ job right after graduation, but there is a good chance that your first job will be a stepping stone towards your dreams. ”

Following my quest to nurture sports talents, as well as promote local and international sporting events in Malaysia, I also set-up the NBL Arena and NBL Asia.

I believe the greater the challenges we overcome, the stronger we become and the more likely we are to succeed.

I believe that failure is part and parcel of success. My journey to boost the standard and popularity of basketball in Malaysia has not been without its challenges. There were times when I failed to accomplish a task at hand, but I didn’t allow my disappointment to get the better of me. I pulled myself together and carried on. I believe the greater the challenges we overcome, the stronger we become and the more likely we are to succeed. Now, when I recall all the challenges that I went through, I feel fortunate to have had those experiences, as they have made me tougher and wiser. My advice to students who will

I honed my communication skills at every opportunity and did not shirk from opportunities when they presented themselves. My first job in a branding and PR agency made me realise that effective communication skills and strong relationships with the media and key influential figures can go a long way to promote a worthy cause.

He has worked with Fortune 500 companies across 38 countries, is a Special Advisor to the President of the World Youth Parliament based in Geneva and is recognised as Malaysia’s National Youth Icon alongside Dato’ Lee Chong Wei and Dato’ Nicol David – and he is only 28.

I went from organising the largest TEDxKL event in Asia with my partners, to co-founding NGO’s, which funded nation-building projects by youths, to travelling around the world - giving speeches on CNN and at the United Nations. One of my coolest milestones was winning Your Big Year in 2011, a global social entrepreneurship and ambassadorial competition with 45,000 participants from 168 countries. As my reward, I got to lead a global expedition to 22 countries, volunteering in humanitarian and conservation projects. I participated in a range of activities such as building wells for impoverished communities in Peru, researching on climate change along the Canadian Rockies, rescuing orphan lion cubs in Zimbabwe and helping a scientific team to unearth a Mayan ruin! Ultimately, all these experiences led me to my true calling - to advocate for good business practices across the globe, and in 2012, I founded my own company, Thriving Talents.

ANGELINE TEH My three biggest accomplishments to date are 1) Being able to give a nice angpow to my parents, after all they’ve done for me. I opened an investment account for my parents to grow their money. 2) Meeting President Barack Obama in 2014 when I was coaching a group of children with our partner and client, Microsoft. 3) Winning INTI’s Most Outstanding Alumni Award. It galvanized my contributions and beliefs towards INTI’s system of producing the best 21st Century, in-demand students in the market! To prepare for the working world, I advise students to use their university days to make mistakes and experiment their abilities. Get to know key industry players and start building your knowledge and network early. Finally, give back, always! ”

I loved the wide range of books that were available there, which were not only helpful for my studies but also allowed me to explore my other interests. To prepare for the working world, I advise students to use their university days to make mistakes and experiment their abilities.

After graduating from INTI with a Diploma in Mass Communication, I applied for scholarships from corporations to fund my degree, but was unsuccessful. However, as luck would have it, one day, as I followed my college mate to make some enquiries about universities, I pretended to

I wanted to work in the media because I believe that access to information is crucial to the health of a country’s democracy. I pursued a career at BFM because I admired the company. So far, my three biggest accomplishments are 1) Graduating with a second class upper degree from Nottingham Trent University

To students out there, the world is changing so rapidly that we can’t possibly learn everything all at once. In order to thrive in today’s world, you must have a positive attitude. Turning my dreams into a reality As my passion for makeup grew, I began to seriously think about starting my own makeup business. My studies at INTI provided me the crucial tools and knowledge to turn my dreams into a reality.

CASE STUDY

Pearl Tan preparing for a photoshoot.

In more ways than one, INTI was a catalyst for the things I aspired to achieve. Two of my favourite lecturers at INTI were Mr. James Tan and Mr. Eric Lee. Mr. James, who comes from a corporate environment, opened our eyes to how the working world really is.

“ INTI was a catalyst for the things I aspired to achieve. ” Pearl Tan, founder of SHOME Global, showing off her make-up skills.

“ Some people think I am crazy to start my own business at 23, especially without any prior business experience. For that, some credit should go to my dad, who constantly inspired me to dream big and make something of myself. Secondly, yes, I don’t have the experience of a businessperson, but the right education can equip me with the knowledge of one.

Mr. Eric taught a specialised subject by Northwood University, which focused on guiding us to understand ourselves better and have clearer expectations of life. His classes gave me a global perspective of business, emboldened me to think big and enhanced my awareness of career paths available. The numerous activities at INTI, such as events and competitions, helped me gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur. My biggest breakthrough came when I took part in the POP Innovation Design Award 2014, an inter-university competition aimed at fostering the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation among young designers. I’m pleased to say that I emerged as the winner for my design named “Statement”, a pendant with a receptacle for lipgloss.

SHOME Global Winning the competition gave me the confidence to finally start my own company, SHOME Global. I intend SHOME Global to be the parent company of several businesses revolving around beauty and fashion. The other two companies under SHOME Global are still in the research and development phase and are likely to be launched in 2016. Though my entrepreneurial journey is just starting, I’ve learned the importance of believing in myself. As an entrepreneur, the journey can often be lonely, so I’ve learnt to surround myself with supportive friends and mentors. My advice to budding entrepreneurs out there Take your time to build your networks while you are studying. INTI provided me many opportunities to form connections that helped me expand my business, but more than that, I made lifelong friends who shaped my character and encouraged me to move ahead with my dreams. ”

Why INTI? Acquiring business knowledge was my main motivation for choosing INTI’s American Degree Transfer Program in International Business. I was also attracted to INTI because of its international affiliations. The dual award from INTI and Northwood University was a pull factor as well, as I felt that it would give me both local and international qualifications to enable me to work in Malaysia and abroad.

After experimenting on my own, I started taking classes to understand what consumers and makeup artists look for in the products they use. My passion for makeup opened doors to collaborating with photographers and models, which eventually led to my involvement in editorial and fashion shoots. I’ve had the opportunity to work with eBay, Candydoll, Puma and Pestle & Mortar, amongst others.

In the past this has included the likes of Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group and Michael Porter, author and business strategist. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and mingle with the world’s top business leaders give these INTI students an incredible exposure to current global trends and business practices, which allows them to learn beyond the four walls of their classroom and also enhance their personal development.

Jake Choy and Lim Yee Wan (first and second from right) together with some representatives from the Laureate network.

“ Earlier this year I was given a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to attend the World Of Business Ideas on Leadership (WOBI) in Mexico City – an event that gathers some of the most inspirational individuals to share ideas with participants from around the world. Beyond just attending as a participant, I chose to audition as a Broadcast Anchor, which required me to compete with students from other universities within the Laureate network.

The overall experience has definitely helped me grow into a more motivated and driven person. I had to learn to adapt to various situations, and this helped me realise how far I could go in the future. There is nothing too big to achieve – the sky is my limit!

I was surprised - but extremely pleased - to be selected. At the same time however, I was daunted by my task. I was the only Broadcast Anchor from Asia and because of the significance and scale of the event, it was a huge responsibility for me.

I am grateful to INTI and encourage all my fellow students to seize the opportunity to participate in these events, as meeting with other students from the Laureate network and working on a global event such as WOBI, was truly an invaluable experience. ”

Meeting inspiring individuals The highlight of my five-day stay in Mexico City was the event itself. During the forum, I met some of the biggest names anyone could imagine. I interviewed the real Captain Richard Phillips, whose experience during the

I would say that my decision to take up this programme was one of the best choices I’ve made in my life, as it brought me closer to my dream of owning my own business. Studying at INTI My time at INTI was brilliant! My lecturers taught me a great deal about the art of marketing to the right target audience, managing a business, and more importantly, sustaining it. These were really valuable lessons for someone like me, who had no prior experience in running a business. For example, through subjects such as Business Communication, I learnt how to communicate effectively in various business situations, which is really useful for me today when I engage with clients from many different backgrounds and industries. INTI’s School of Mass Communication is awesome! They have state-of-the-art facilities in the production room and the editing lab is fully equipped with the latest editing tools and software, so we were always kept up-to-date with the latest innovation.

Jack Chee records a cooking demonstration by Chef Eliezer from the School of Hospitality.

Gaining crucial practical experience Even as a student I knew that apart from the knowledge I gained in the classroom, I needed a more in-depth understanding of the trade.

My dream My aspiration is for Grenos Film to be one of the best production houses in the country and even internationally! But I know that success doesn’t happen overnight and that I need to gain more practical experiences to add to the knowledge that I have accumulated at INTI and thus far. As they say, practice makes perfect! ”

So, I spent a year learning the ropes by working with other videographers and other businesses within the creative industry, whilst I was still studying. I also participated in an Employer Project organised by INTI, which gave me the opportunity to work as a photographer for Berita Harian, a national newspaper. When I felt I had sufficient experience and understood the market well enough, I told myself that it was time to start on my own, so I took a leap of faith and founded Grenos Film late last year after completing my studies. Grenos Film today I’m pleased to say that Grenos Film is now a fully established creative arts production company with clients from the education, food and beverage as well as entertainment industries. My biggest accomplishment thus far was directing videos for INTI – my very own alma mater! What’s next for Grenos Films? Firstly I would like to improve the quality of my videos by leveraging on technology. Secondly, I would like to have a go at producing films. This would be something new for me with a steep learning curve and I can’t wait to get started!

To provide students the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience while still studying, INTI has built close ties with the industry to develop employer projects – a programme that enables students to work on actual business issues faced by the industry. Through these projects, students are required to work together in teams to develop and present their proposals within a two-month period. The process enables them to learn key soft skills, such as collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and communication, and equips them with practical experiences in meeting and presenting before top management representatives from their ‘employer’ companies. Upon graduation, these students take with them a portfolio of handling real projects, giving them the edge in the marketplace. INTI has worked with over 400 employers from various industries and this year has completed 133 employer projects.

Leveraging on technology Since the participants were communicating across a wide geographical distance, video conferencing facilities were used to facilitate the activities, which included programme introduction, employer presentation, mid-point review, penultimate students’ presentations and selected final presentation to the employer. Both groups were eager, knowing that the experience would strengthen their resume. With technology enabling the rapid sharing of information across borders, transnational collaboration is quickly becoming a normal practice in multinationals. Such collaborations, however, can be hugely challenging due to a host of complex factors, such as differing cultural expectations, inequalities in power relations and communication gaps.

Surpassing expectations The students had to draw on all the skills that they have learnt in their studies to fully understand the underlying problem, hold productive discussions, and finally articulate their solutions to the client. With the steady guidance of their supervisor and employer, they not only overcame the initial teething challenges, but exceeded expectations by coming up with innovative ideas that were, to quote the client, “not on my radar.” Practical experience As for the students, they agreed unanimously that working alongside professionals who are currently in the field to solve a real-world business issue gave them invaluable insight into the industry. They also appreciated the chance to learn first-hand about what is going on in the technological world - and perhaps more critically, what marketable skills networking students are expected to know, in order to maximise their employability.

Knowing the value that could come from an infusion of young, forward-thinking individuals with fresh perspectives, IBM entrusted the job of repositioning its shared services sector to 36 Public Relations students from INTI.

As part of its branding strategy, IT giant IBM was keen on a new PR strategy that would differentiate the company from its competitors. A new brand strategy was timely to showcase IBM’s strength in this sector. Knowing the value that could come from an infusion of young, forward-thinking individuals with fresh perspectives, IBM entrusted the job of repositioning its shared services sector to 36 Year Three Public Relations students. Far from being daunted, the students relished the chance to tackle a high-priority task for a top tier brand. The brief To set the students on the right track, they were given a concise brief from the organisation. The PR campaign should highlight the company’s emphasis on conversation and engagement, demonstrate its more insightful and analytical approach and emphasise the rigorous requirement for high level leanwork-processes and lots of data-driven analysis. The students were given very clear objectives. They were expected to define appropriate and relevant campaign goals. In addition, they were required to perform an insight survey on the effectiveness of the campaign to determine the company’s

potential future direction. Getting their priorities right was a huge asset to the team; it helped them to choose the right campaign strategies and tactics, which they rigorously debated and benchmarked against case studies. Applying classroom knowledge There were plenty of opportunities for the students to exercise the analytical and planning skills they learnt in class. As part of the planning process, discussions covered campaign research, planning, implementation and evaluation for issue and crisis management, sponsorship or CSR/ donor programmes, events management, as well as the role of analytics and social media. Boosting their credentials Although the project spanned only 12 weeks, the students felt their learning and growth were significant. Because the work extended through the entire process of developing a campaign, from conception to post-mortem, they went through the motions of a full-fledged PR campaign, an accomplishment that would enhance their resume. It was certainly a great way to build upon the foundation of their course and give them the opportunity to develop as media practitioners.

Putting these fresh young minds in the driver’s seat of developing a new product fostered an entrepreneurial atmosphere that fed their energy to think out of the box.

How many students get to participate in the launch of a cool product by a world-changing company? 20 INTI College Sabah students taking the Global Perspective in Economics course, that’s who! Over a period of 16 weeks, they worked on the key component of a marketing plan for UBER, an appbased company that has taken the private transportation industry by storm. In less than six years since its founding, it has expanded from its

San Francisco roots to 200 cities worldwide, including Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bharu. Encouraged by this success, UBER has set its sights on expanding into the East Malaysian market, but before embarking on a capital-intensive venture, they obviously needed to size up the potential and risks in the new marketplace. Their challenge To help them make this important decision, UBER engaged the INTI team to develop a SWOT analysis and formulate recommendations about the feasibility of their expansion plans. This task required the team to apply the full range of their classroomtaught skills - marketing analysis, web services, critical and analytical thinking and data oriented strategy - to an industry they were unfamiliar with. But, fuelled by their excitement of working on this tremendous project, the students were raring to go.

As a result of the exercise, the students developed a fuller awareness of the company, the industry and the dynamics of the international market, and particularly the importance of understanding customer demographics in business decisionmaking. In class, they were taught that demographic variables, such as cross-cultural differences, can impact the supply and demand in a region. Through the project they could now relate that lesson to UBER’s ability to expand at lightning speed, tailoring local efforts to suit the unique dynamics of each new market. At the end of the project, the students agreed that the experience gave them a richer understanding of the underlying economic processes and principles that drive a business. Work experience in the form of internships are steadily becoming more important and students with a few months of internship exposure are more likely to be considered for potential job opportunities. To support our students in gaining the extra edge, INTI has set in place a series of programmes which firstly promotes awareness about their ambitions, interests and potential, and then provides them the training and mentorship they need to carry themselves confidently into the boardroom. By doing so, INTI has successfully achieved 100% of our internship placements, among which 20% of job and internship placements, were with Malaysia’s Top 100 (M100) employers from a variety of industries.

GET A JOB BEFORE YOU GRADUATE THROUGH ON CAMPUS RECRUITMENT

CONNECT WITH FUTURE EMPLOYERS

At INTI, we aim to ensure our students graduate with not only the best qualifications, but with the best possible careers and work opportunities for their future. INTI’s On Campus Recruitment is an initiative to provide students the access and exposure they need to secure jobs with top local and international employers. The programme, which includes resume writing workshops, mock interviews, personal grooming and conversational skills, equips them with the soft skills necessary to get the job they want. Recruitment and hiring managers from a variety of organisations are invited to meet, interview and assess these students on campus before they graduate - making this a much more efficient and simple interview process. The programme also helps students to track feedback from potential employers and updates them on offers they may receive. Through On Campus Recruitment, many of our students are finding their careers with well-known organisations and to date, we are proud that 97% of our graduates secure jobs within six months of completing their studies at INTI, and from that 16% are employed before graduation.

BE SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

CREATING A POSITIVE IMPACT IN SOCIETY

As future leaders, INTI believes that it is crucial for students to not only have a clear view of what is happening around them, but also critically assess and determine the role they play in society. Developing a socially conscious mindset at a young age sets them up to having a greater awareness of global affairs and its impact when they enter into the workplace – an important characteristic employers often look for. By organising activities for students that encourage their sense of social consciousness, INTI promotes an all-rounded learning experience that empowers students with a sense of responsibility to society. These efforts are aimed to not only engage students in social work, but to also groom and empower them as future global citizens who will make a difference.

TIKAR Bag So, I came up with a design, which I named TIKAR Bag. It’s a two-in-one shelter and bag - light, convenient, and easily modified to suit its surroundings. Essentially, TIKAR Bag would serve as a temporary and convenient portable shelter, targeted at the homeless who sleep on the streets and are exposed to the elements.

CASE STUDY

“ INTI challenged me to use design as a way to solve real-world problems. ” Ashwaniy shares her creation at the #SaySomethingNice Campaign Launch at INTI International College Subang.

“ I was among the first batch to study Graphic Design at INTI International College Subang. Although I was always interested in art and design, I never considered pursuing graphic design as a career path. Then, as my journey at INTI progressed, my interest in the subject deepened - I began to seriously consider Graphic Design as a potential career!

Ashwaniy Mohd Ali 22 years old

A journey of self-discovery INTI has taught me a lot about design’s power to solve problems, as well as my own capacity as a designer. Most importantly, it honed my ability to critically think through and tackle the challenges I faced, as well as the ones I see in society. One of the most helpful components of my course was the ‘self-directed’ project – an assignment-based subject that provided us the flexibility to choose exactly what we wanted to focus on. This class gave me an avenue to explore which area of design I was really interested in. My message to designers out there I encourage you to push forward your ideas. If you have a design or idea that you are fully passionate about, you should build on it and look for opportunities to make it a reality. Believe that you can make a difference in the world. ”

Ashwaniy demonstrates how TIKAR Bag works.

Why Tikar? In Malaysia, tikar refers to an ethnic art piece or mat, which is used to protect things placed on the surface or beneath the mat. I incorporated certain elements of tikar into my design, to maintain the ‘local’ essence and familiarity. Illustration of patterns inspired by tikar and pixel design were used to achieve a balance between the traditional and modern look and feel. Symbolically, tikar serves as an idea of protecting the homeless.

Designing to create impact I especially enjoyed learning with Miss Ang Tong Yin, a Senior Lecturer at INTI’s Centre for Art & Design. She not only taught us the principles of design, but also enlightened us to consider our overall concepts and messages when we create something new. I realised that graphic design was not just about making pretty things. Design can be used as a tool that can solve critical problems.

GET THE EDGE

Fuelling my passion I got really fired up by these new ideas and started to explore the role of design in solving major social issues. In the course of my research, I found out that most of the homeless in Malaysia are not just people with no jobs or homes, but are also those earning wages which are far too low for them to afford a place to live. There are also too few temporary shelters in Malaysia for them. It got me thinking – how could I solve this issue as a graphic designer?
