The woods are full of wild flowers in the spring, including celandines, primroses, bluebells and wood sorrel.

1.

From the far corner of the car park, follow the waymarkers towards the castle along the concrete track through the trees. If you’re here in the spring the verges are packed with fragrant wild garlic.

2.

Take the first turning to your left through a wooden gate.

3.

Follow the gravel path as it meanders through the planted woods.

4.

After a while you will pass through another gate and the path dips down to cross a marsh where a couple of small bridges cross the outflow from a spring.

5.

Soon you will see glimpses of the castle through the trees to your left. Follow the signs to the entrance and then climb the wooden steps to reach the castle. As you catch your breath, imagine the people building this hill without machines 1,000 years ago!

6.

After exploring the castle, you can either retrace your steps back to your car, or you can continue around the foot of the mound to join a pleasant grassy path that passes through the trees to join a quiet road that will lead you back to the village.
