responsible for species specificity (12, 13). Future work will involve expressing the cloned ovine IL-2 cDNA for affinity labelling studies using human and sheep activated T cells.

Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is a lymphokine produced by activated T lymphocytes. It supports clonal expansion of helper and cytotoxic T cells (1-3), growth and differentiation of B cells (4, 5) and activates natural killer cells (6). The cDNAs of human (7, 8), murine (9) and bovine (10, 11) IL-2 have been cloned, sequenced and expressed (7-11). We have now cloned and sequenced the entire coding region of ovine IL-2 cDNA by PCR, using primers based on the bovine sequence (10, 11). The predicted precursor protein consists of 155 amino acids, representing a mature protein of 135 residues and a signal peptide of 20 residues. Comparison of human, murine, bovine and ovine IL-2 sequences reveals extensive regions of identity. However, the similarity of the bovine and ovine sequences is particularly striking, with only 16 nucleotide and 6 amino acid differences (the latter shown below in parentheses) within the analogous sequenced regions. Such comparisons should help to identify those residues in ovine IL-2
