One Family welcomes you, your family and your friends to our annual Family Day Festival. One Family was founded as Cherish in 1972. Over the decades, we have always worked to combat the stereotypes that can be attached to families that are perceived as non-traditional. We know, and research demonstrates, that it’s not the form a family takes that is most important to a child’s well-being but the quality of relationships at home. We founded the Family Day Festival five years ago so that all families, no matter their make-up, have a day every year to celebrate their family. Family Day is about embracing the wonderful diversity of families in Ireland today. We believe all families matter, and that individuals who feel cared for and supported by those around them – whether families or friends or others in their lives – help to make stronger communities for us all. We like the UN definition of family which refers to two or more people, bound together by mutual consent, birth and/or adoption or placement who together care for each other. We celebrate all types of family on Family Day – one-parent families, step-families, the two-parent married family, adoptive and foster families, blended and extended families, and those with opposite and same sex parents. Family Day is inspired by UN International Day of Families which is held on 15 May annually and was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1992.
Family Day has grown to become Ireland’s largest celebration of the diversity of families that make up modern Irish society. The programme offers magic, dance, games, arts and writing workshops, music, storytelling and lots more, and the chance to meet with many family organisations to find out about what they do. Entry and all activities, workshops and entertainment are free. One Family gratefully acknowledges the kind support of Dublin Town and Dublin City Council for Family Day 2015. We are also grateful to Safefood and proud to encourage that we all ‘Bring Back Play’ at Family Day. Thank you also to Fyffes who donated bananas to help give us energy to enjoy all of today’s activities. Thank you to everyone who supports Family Day and to all our wonderful volunteers – the organisations and individuals who contribute in countless ways. And thank you for joining in the celebrations and being a part of it. We hope you have lots of fun. Wishing you a very Happy Family Day!

As part of safefood’s campaign to take on Childhood Obesity, parents and guardians are being urged to ‘Bring Back Play’ as a way to encourage children to be more active every day. The Bring Back Play initiative is about introducing children to the games their parents would have played at their age, like Kerbs, Kick the can and Hopscotch. Getting children to be active is so important and whether it’s playing in the garden or playground, organised sports or active games like hide and seek they all count. It could be 10 minutes skipping, 15 minutes running or kicking a ball it all adds up. Any amount of activity is better than none. Children who get the recommended 60 minutes daily physical activity will likely have healthier sleep and eating habits too.
Why not introduce your children to games you played at their age? Maybe you have your own name for these games or play them a different way. Why not join in yourself? That way you can keep an eye on them and make sure the kids play somewhere safe. Check out the list of games at safefood.eu, you can even vote for your favourite. #bringbackplay For more tips and advice visit safefood.eu
Lost & Found Children Parents/Guardians are solely responsible for the safety and well-being of their child/children at all times. At a busy event, it is important to be aware of your child’s location at all times. Follow the steps below to help ensure your and your child’s wellbeing and enjoyment of the Festival. 1 Collect a free wristband at the Information stand at the One Family tent. Write your own mobile phone number on this clearly and fasten it around your child’s wrist. Do not write any names or other information on the wristband. This will help you and your child to be reunited quickly should s/he be lost. 2 Be vigilant – there are lots of fun activities at the event and it is very easy for a child to become distracted or separated from you within seconds.. Lost Child 1 If you realise your child is missing, stay calm. Check the immediate vicinity and call out to your child. 2 If you cannot find your child, alert the event staff who will help. Go to the Information stand at the One Family tent and notify the staff there or notify a steward wearing a Family Day t-shirt, or one of the security or Red Cross personnel. You will be asked for a description and some basic details. 3 Stewards will help you to locate your child. 4 The entrances are staffed. No child should leave the event alone. 5 When you find your child, remember to notify a member of the event team so the search can be called off.
The Lost & Found Child Service at the Family Day Festival is co-ordinated by experienced One Family staff members.
